Thank you sir, but I have one doubt about the micro partition strategy, it is somewhat similar to parquet format...as they also store metadata information for every part files and provide columnar storage, so exactly it is different then that parquet?

I'm absolutely new to Snowflake, and this was easily the best video I could've run into to get insights into Snowflakes architecture. I could even relate to how azure Synapse architecture compares with Snowflakes architecture! Kudos, great video!

working on GCP these days and in BQ for the past 1 week ...came to know of this Snowflakes ....this video shows the fundas and more general knowledge for a Snowflakes newcomer especially from cost point of view. Seems they have started supporting GCP of late...v good video for a DB/Cloud guy but totally new in SF

Separation of storage and compute is a big one. Auto scaling. Reducing administrational overhead (indexing etc.), Time travel and zero copy cloning to name but a few of the disruptive features Snowflake offers.

Nice explanation. But at 9:20 new warehouses will not start and shutdown automatically, it will increase/decrease cluster based on workload and based on maximum cluster defined

It would be great if it could run on Lambda (so the startup time would be below 1 second, and I wouldn't need to worry about servers). There are some challenges though. 15-minute max execution, and 3GB of memory max. Thanks for the great video!

Brilliant presentation, thanks for doing this. One question, you said all the data is stored on AWS S3 file system, however, when you create an account on Snowflake you get the option for GCP, Azure and AWS, what are these options for? Is Snowflake meant only for data warehouse kind of applications or it can be used for OLTP systems as well?

Snowflake can run on AWS, Azure and GCP. This is where the data is physically stored, in S3, Azure Blob or GCS. Primarily Snowflake is design of data warehousing style queries (OLAP).

Parquet file format is very similar...row group and column chunks. Spark too do filter pushdown.

Great explanation, It seems like that Snowflake is using Map Reduce to create the micro partitions. Now I understand how Map Reduce works. This is not unique to SnowFlake.

Hi Prashant...Thanks for this lovely explanation as you always do. When I was going through the snowflake tutorial they mentioned that there is no cost when you execute "DDL" , only "DML" statements incur the cost. Please correct me if this is wrong assumption

You should require a virtual warehouse to execute both DML and DDL statements - both will incur a cost.
