Bought this game. Hated it at first but still played it for 5 hours straight. So I thought to myself obviously I don't really hate this game if I just played it for that long! So I gave it a rest and tried it again the next day and I realized I wasn't playing a racing game. The steering and lack of paved roads kind of turned me off at first. But then I fully realized what I got myself into. And patients with this game is a true virtue! I've been playing only this game everyday now since I bought it! So much fun. I feel like im in the woods of RDR2 but with trucks. Only thing I think the game is missing is a few animals out in the world. Also maybe another truck driving around now and again. Love to see how that would go on the skinny roads of any map. Keep trucking!
I had a similar experience when I first started the game as well. I almost quit because I felt it was too hard, but like you said patience will go a long way. Really glad you stuck with it!!
Well this was a surprise. Great guide, lots of info for beginners and veterans a like. Personally in my time with the game I feel the Advance Special gearbox is the best in the game. Usually has great fuel economy and can really move the power to the wheels with out to much wheelspin. Might just be that trucks it comes with are really good but I still feel it's the top slot gearbox in the game right now.
Ya I had to change it up lol. Thank you! I’m glad you liked it! I hope it was helpful. I’m going to agree with you. 5 gears 3 low ranges; you just can’t beat it. They might not go as fast on pavement but 95% of gameplay is in mud or snow. I’ve noticed the vehicle that have it do get good gas mileage as well and most of them have the Zikz engine which is massive
Amazing video, I finally gave the Fine-Tune GearBox a chance after watching your video and its just a amazing tool be able to select a low and a half gears that although it does use more fuel, and there is a reddit post with the full consumption numbers, but you do get thought the hard sections so much quicker that it in practice, it often use less fuel. Really noticeable in river/deep mud crossings. Just changed all my Trucks and Scout to it, its my main gearbox now. Thx for the video.
Im glad bro! Sorry it was so longwinded lol .Thank you for suggesting it. Im working on another one of your suggestions as well. Should be ready in a week or so for the whole series!
Completely agree with your preference for the offroad and snowrunner gearboxes. I think if you can't have diff lock, however, low range is pretty useless; I got the royal bm17 and I stuck a high range in it in order to fly around all maps at ludicrously high speed trying not to flip over or get stuck. It's great fun but I'd rather it actually had diff lock lol, this style of driving absolutely minces the durability of the truck
Very good points all around. I agree with the BM17 as well and trucks that don’t have a Diff Lock. In my experience the only gear box settings that will allow all wheels to drive with power or most wheels is Low+, auto, and high gear. This makes the high range very useful but gosh is it scary with some trucks right ?
@@fabiooliveira4605 In my tests I found the high range drinks more because its a more relaxed gearbox allowing for revs/ power throughput. When it boils down to it, it’s driver choice on what they wanna do
Thanks for going into great detail. I found it helpful to slowdown before driving into water but I’ll try switching to low instead. Also do you game on PC? I’m starting to play more simulators and I bought IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles on Steam when they had a sale. It’s probably the best WWII combat flight/tank sim available. It’s a game that been around for a while and the Devs are still adding DLC to it.
@@NProvince Cool. Helps if you have a joystick or HOTAS setup. I picked up a used one on eBay. Here’s a link to a video that will explain how to purchase it better than I can. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LB2StWjR0o0.html So basically you just have to purchase Battle Of Stalingrad on Steam and then you can add on to it later either through Steam or the Devs website. I think I bought everything when it was at 75% off. That’s if u like it of course. I also have Track IR which I haven’t had a chance to set up yet.
I heard that the Fine-tune is the best in off-road terrain, but it raises your fuel consumption up crazy so I prefer offroad gearbox for lower fuel consumption. In my gameplay, I use high when I see dry mud and using low+ when seeing mediocre mud. The low gear I like to use alot is the low+ gear, as it gives some more speed on light mud and can be useful in light harsh terrain with a diff lock also still making your truck gain speed.
thank you for this detailed guide nathan it sure helps a lot I have a suggestion i dont know much about offroading and i have no idea how and in what situation im supposed to use the active suspension on my truck can you do a guide on the uses of active suspension?
Well I dont use the Fine tune because of one reason. Fuel burn. It takes more fuel to rune the fine tune and I'm sure you've seen how big of a stickler I am on fuel consumption
@@NProvince I highly recommend it. It's basically ETS / ATS in SnowRunner and it's a separate save so does not interfere with your saves. Beautiful, detailed and fun as hell.
@@NProvince I hope you'll enjoy 👍 We've just finish role play logistics session on this map, with my buddy and it feels great. Attention to detail is awesome. You get the best of both worlds as there are swamps and light offroad as well as the country roads and short highways. I was actually just rewatching your heavy duty and highway tier list as we're playing Highway Haulin region on Hard and we're lookin' for 2nd truck for highway use! I'm considering CT861 or CT860. American style highway moded trucks are tempting but I think we gonna keep it vanilla there. Continuing the research :)
Before I forget, quick tip while I watch the video - music segment was distracting and too loud (for me personally). Just as a side note because I love your content and would be even more pleasant to listen to gearbox mode changes instead of music (while I investigate how you operate gears 👀😍)
Hell yeah, been really enjoying your truck reviews and I'm glad to see you branching out to different styles, excited to see what's in store for the channel!
I am actually working with a fellow youtuber for his video on this topic. I believe his video is going to be amazing. I def can explain more if you catch me on one of my weekly streams. Right now I'm working on a series on breaking down maps in the game.
Come to find that high gear really helps out for trucks that you don't have 4x4 drive on them yet. Still have to be careful but it will get you up hills and through most mud. For anyone who likes a challenge.
A slight disclaimer I'd like to bring up is that because of the AWD fuel consumption penalty, the highrange gearbox isn't actually that great to use with trucks that have always on AWD. In my testing with the Navistar I used a ton more fuel with the highrange gearbox than I did with the Offroad gearbox.
Yes indeed. I didn’t really cover this a lot on this video, but throughout my truck reviews I’ve spoken on this subject. I also have lectured on these two gearboxes showing that very thing a lot on stream. It’s essentially the range vs gal/min argument
Thank you! I wanna do more tests with it. I think if you’re using a vehicle without AWD it doesn’t chew as much fuel. I need to look into it further. If that’s true then it’s a good option for the P512
@@NProvince yeah its the only gearbox I use on rwd trucks like the p512, p16, and yansors highway trucks. With them and other rwd trucks you have to use the finetune.
So in my current few reviews I’ve explained the high range gear box compared to the off-road. I think rev caps are the differences the between them. There is a difference between “consumption” and “range” check out my past 4 reviews. I kinda explain a little on why I think the off-road gear box is better for fuel. Thank you for the comment. I hope this helps.
i use at Scout's and 6/8 and 10 Wheeler Trucks always the biggest Mud Tires available and this makes fast driving impossible so i use the SnowRunner Gearbox at Scouts and the Offroad Gearbox at Trucks. mostly i drive in the 3 low Gears.
I'm still on the missions and with a Trailer full of steel on mud or snow it's just annoying to use the normal 4 to 5 gears. too many downshifting to the 1st gear especially with the basic engine in the particular truck in usage. unloaded on tarmac i use the normal 4/5 gears, of course.
Nathan, the Highrange transmission is NOT good on fuel. I don't know if this was patched, but I just started using it on the Western Star 4960 and it became an absolute fuel hog. I went from comfortably finishing missions without worrying about fuel to suddenly almost running out of gas. I only play on Hard Mode and it's frustrating that literally every upgrade increases fuel consumption.
I’ve made updates videos on gearboxes and their consumption values. So per the code the high range does have a lower fuel burn, but in this video I talk about why the high range burns more fuel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RzGZQkgdNj0.htmlsi=Uf5UinM9KmeuYlVY
I would love to see that a vehicle that kinda has something like that currently is the F750. Six gear auto with full low gears.. wish we could duplicate that.
@@NProvince that would be nice if they have that hybrid specially now that the phase 7 has been drop , you can get some decent speed on less demanding terrain
To me it feels like High range offers better difflock than on Auto. Trucks with always on difflock just plow trough in high gear and get stuck in auto. No matter the gearbox. I need my High and Low range. Auto is just for speed for me.
This comment might be confusing (sorry), but i have questions about the gearboxes and ranges: Does the higher range on highway/highrange gearboxes have a better top speed than the highest gear in auto? Do you use L+ over auto when driving?
So I will share a few extra videos that will show you A TON of info about gearboxes. @@apfelmauss Tbh there is no advantage to using chained tires on mud over offroad or mud tires. They actually arent coded as good even tho some folks will swear by them. However, personally i have swapped to all chains on maps like Kola Peninsula, & Amur due to chains adding effective grip on Icy roads and rocks.
I definitely prefer the SnowRunner/Offroad/Advanced Special as well. The Fine Tune does have some good uses, but I just dont like the slidder or the consumption that comes with it.
Actually wheel spin digs you in, low gear stops that and allows you to dig that out. This is explained in my muddrunnin tips video showing how to properly dig out. Auto works in a lot of ways in 1st gear, but vehicles with high power to weight they spin a lot in auto. Low is also the only way for some trucks to use Diff Lock which is essential to getting out of mud
not a useful video for me. however I will share some of my preferences when choosing a gearbox: 1) difflock type - if a truck has always on difflock and is not limited to special gearboxes, it will most probably get a highrange; trucks that need to be shifted to low for locking diffs, mostly are set up with offroad gb. 2) truck speed and agility. If a truck is fast from the factory, it will get the highrange, despite of the difflock type, 'cause it needs one. 3)Conditions - terrain I'm gonna be using a truck in and the load type. If there's enough solid ground sections, and the load is average, I will mostly use highrange or multipurpose gb. If it is boggy or the load is super-heavy, I will be installing offroad gb. The advanced special is always better than the standard special, so there's isn't even a hesitation. I don't take in mind fuel usage usually, because I haven't played in hard mode that much. The only situation where I stuck to a special gb instead of an advanced special, was for the Cat TH357. The telehandler sits idling most of the type it is used, so it doesn't need all these 5 gears; on the contrary, the fuel economy is the factor here, because it also has a small fuel tank. For some period of time I kept both of the THs in my fleet, while one was used for it's true purpose, the other was granted the advanced gb, left without a fork and turned into a scout for Big Salmon Peak map.
I love your channel, and thanks for the content, but I do have to say that this guide would have been better if you would have been driving with a vehicle to show how that gearbox works. I'm still not clear what Fine Tune is all about since I have never used it and don't want to spend game currency on it until I know that it's worth the investment.
Hey thank you! I appreciate that. I see what your saying. Well truthfully im not a fan of the fine tuned due to its elevated burn values when AWD is actively and it feels sluggish getting your correct low gear setting. What I mean by that is it takes time to move from Low+ to Low etc, but it’s low+ speed is pretty fast. This is why I think the off-road or high range is the picks for sure. If I’m on stream and your around, I can do a deeper dive on this as well to fully answer this.
Take the stock gearbox, use a better engine and focus on use AWD and diff lock when you need. The other gearboxes only screw the fuel economy and add nothing to the vehicles, weak vehicles like Chevy or Hummer consume less but powerfull ones like Loadstar 1700 consume more. Gearboxes are useless, what counts is tire size, the suspension, engine and weight of the vehicle if you already have diff lock and AWD.
This is totally not true. Gearboxes absolutely matter and if you actually looked at proper information regarding burn values and the effects of engine stress you might see this differently.
@@NProvince I guess everyone has a different experience. But i can tell you gearboxes did nothing to my vehicles, speed does nothing and be able to use front wheels or not in L... There are places not even that works and i've been there. AWD and diff lock, for snow chain tires and mud tires for everything else. Raise suspension isn't allways a good choice. Some vehicles are terrible,ANK MK38 Civ,Paystar 5070,Scout 800,Fleetstar and Derry Longhorn.🤦♂️ I like to use upgrades carefully because there are downsides too.
I’m not sure what you mean? I know the number of gears. Also im not sure what you mean by “can’t be bothered” I reply to mostly everyone. Im sorry you were dissatisfied.
