Quick radio operation while a nasty snowstorm rolls in. Initially, we tried to establish a COMM's connection via phone(voice), however, after an hour of attempting to establish contact and the weather worsening we decided to call it quits. Upon return to our vehicle, we determined it would be best to return to the operation location and set up the station again and attempt to establish COMM's via a data mode due to the efficiency and resiliency of data modes in poor environments.

You make excellent points in this entertaining video. One piece of gear you might want to add to your kit is a small tarp to hang over you and your rig to keep the snow and or rain off. DE WA1KLI

@@bravowhiskyalpha1581 Creating shade, getting out of rain/snow, blocking wind or focusing a cooling breeze. A trail tarp has easily been the best addition to my portable radio setup in the last year.

As the owner of the ic705- I bought the chameleon mpas 2.0 to go out and do portable work with it. I have the same tuner (mat) I can’t make any contacts with the mpas and 705. I can’t do any voice contacts on the 705 period unless on a perfectly tuned dipole at height. The mpas is a great antenna in its own right At 100watts but doing voice at 5watts isn’t what it’s made for. Kind of disappointed

My first QSO with the 705 and MPAS 2.0 was ~1500mi voice on 5 watts. I haven't come anywhere close to duplicating that since and usually do struggle for voice QSOs with that setup even at 10 watts. With digital modes however, I haven't had any problems with 5/10 watts and the versatility of the MPAS stands out again, but any time I'm planning for voice contacts I take the extra time to set up with a resonant alternative.

I actually did end up making contacts regularly with the MPAS. You just have to monitor the conditions and propagation by listening for other stations from your area getting through.

For Ecom I am leaning heavily on my 130ft Ultimax 80m-10m EFHW. It was an okay antenna until I started grounding and choking at the feedpoint, after being informed by testing down by Steve Ellington that showed up to 3dBr improvement compared to other configurations. Right now I am trying to figure out how to get the most out of my Chameleon Emcomm III portable. So far the performance is mediocre at best, especially on 80m and 40m. On 80m ancedotal signal reports suggest the Emcomm III is about -6dBr down from the EFHW. I've only deployed the Emcomm III as a sloper or inverted-L and I am not running their recommended choke. I'll probably order it this weekend. As my primary mode is NVIS on 80m I should be running horizontal. The EFHW does great at 80m NVIS as an inverted-L elevated about 25ft using SSB phone running 20W. Sometimes I turn down to 5W-10W. Testing in this video shows JS8Call running NVIS at 100mW over 20km across a mountian. At 1W the signal becomes difficult to DF. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9QIeG4LiFMg.html

The MPAS is an antenna with comprisees for sure, however, for the functionality, ease of use, speed of deployment I think it’s great. Check out some newer vides where I use a much cheeper antenna in a sloper and NVIS configuration. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the video. I am surprised the little ic705 even transmits with the low bat light on and in those conditions. Have you tried a extra battery to bump it up to 10 watts? Also maybe a counter poise wire for that antenna? I am just starting out, but my kit looks very similar to yours. And writing from Canada, your weather looks like mine too! 73.

Sorry for such a late reply, must have missed this one. Yes I actually did have an external battery, however, due to the weather getting progressively worse I decided it was enough for that day. Thanks for watching!

Paul, this is not the first time you’ve made a video where you’ve been in the extra portion of the forty meter voice band. Please do better. From a genuine supporter, and not the radio police. I really enjoy watching your videos and that’s why I’m a subscriber.

Digital modes are an epic fail in high noise conditions. And for EMCOMM? LOL. Your whole "system" can be wiped out by the simplest malware. CW for the win!

Actually digital modes excel in high noise. But sure CW is great too. Thanks for your comment.

I am an electrical engineer & HAM. The science is not with you Darren. CW is a digital mode and a good one. Some digital modes exceed CW in noisy conditions. That is just a clear fact in theory and practice. Not Winlink. It is the type of comm used by JS8CALL that is more capable than CW in noisy/low power ops. The whole wsjt suite is another example but are not for general messaging like JS8CALL. EmCOMM is better done with digital modes and standardized forms. Much more reliable comm of emergency messages by people less skilled than CW operators. Nothing against CW, which is a great digital mode also.😉
