I've never been so invested in a machining series like this vice build lol. It has to be because Adam has no time constraints and is focusing on using all of his skills on something he wants to be perfect for him. I would totally love to see what personal project he does next.

I really love how the hardtail vise is turning out. I don't know if you plan on painting it, but I think just a coating bluing or nitride coating would look the best. I'd hate to paint over that beautiful casting texture, it just looks mean and like it's meant to be used and belongs in a shop.

Have you ever thought of making interrupted studs like a battleship breech, slip the nut down, then turn 1/4 turn to tighten rather than having to screw all the way off/on? Might be a cool side project/experiment to see if you can make "quick attach" hold down implements Very cool...your boss cleanups are more "precision" than many shops precision work! Simon, Taiwan is the source for this casting, and is where the hard tail vise is finished. I think the casting is great work by quality workmen and a beauty. Hard for me to see the USA is not able to cast and finish these items, but as Adam said, when he was unpacking the rough castings, Jason was not able to find a major supplier here in the US to either cast or complete the vise for a comparable price. You are right though, Mainland China has a long stretch of poor product manufacturing.

Marking drops is some of the best advice ever. Unless you have individual (marked) bins for each type of material you work with you might as well be working with mystery-metal. I use number and letter stamps and stamp the material type on each end, Yeah its a hassle and take a few seconds but it sure beats broken or damaged tools and/or disappointing results. Thinner and smaller stuff just put a flag of tape on it and mark it with a sharpie.

*Summary* *Intro* - *0:00* The project is to make a simple adapter to convert a metric buffer thread to a standard buffer pad thread. - *0:47* The adapter will allow the use of common, easily obtained buffing pads. *Material and Design* - *1:51* Material for the adapter will be 1-inch stress-proof steel. - *2:04* The design is simple with threading on each end and wrench flats milled into the middle. *Machining: Turning the Threads* - *2:22* To ensure concentricity, the original coating on the stock material is removed with emery paper. - *3:34* The outer diameter is turned and faced. - *5:44* Threads are cut using a threading tool on the lathe. - *8:26* Threads are cut to a depth calculated for a 29.5 degrees compound slide angle. - *9:04* Test cuts are used to achieve the correct fit. - *13:02* Thread fit is fine-tuned after testing with a flange nut. - *14:01* Thread triangles are used to measure the pitch diameter of the threads. - *17:30* Threads are polished using emery paper. *Machining: Milling the Wrench Flats* - *18:35* The partially completed adapter is transferred to a milling machine and held in an indexing spacer. - *18:42* The center of the part is located with an edge finder. - *19:12* A 3/8" two-flute end mill is used to mill flats for a 5/8" wrench. *Section: Finishing Part One* - *19:19* Measure outside diameter (OD) of the adapter to calculate depth of milling cut. - *19:42* Touch off end mill and calculate cut to create 5/8" wrench flat. - *20:27* Machine first flat. - *20:57* Rotate part 180 degrees and machine the second flat. - *21:12* Test fit using a 5/8" wrench. - *21:36* Locate T-handle for the lathe's chuck key. - *21:43* Deburr part edges with a file. - *22:09* Note to self: purchase small jewelers files. - *22:51* Set part length dimensions - *23:11* Part off the adapter on the lathe. - *23:50* Mark leftover stock as stress-proof for future identification. - *24:27* Face off parted end of adapter on the lathe. - *25:05* Remove burrs from facing cut. - *25:50* Chamfer edges. - *26:17* Locate metric drill and tap set. - *26:46* Select 8.5 mm as the correct drill size for a 10x1.5 tap. - *27:26* Apply Anchor Lube thread lubricant to tap. - *27:32* Use spring-loaded center to start the tap hole. - *28:16* Complete tapping the part by hand. - *28:39* Test metric threads with matching screw. *Section: Project Wrap-Up* - *29:09* Review finished adapter design. - *29:16* Summarize tools and processes used to make the adapter. - *29:56* Demonstrate finished adapter assembly with metric threaded buffer and buffing pad. - *30:29* Acknowledge viewer interest in shop projects. *Bonus (Unrelated) Section: Preparing for Next Project* - *31:26* Set up a swivel plate using a face mill on a manual mill. - *31:59* Center swivel plate using DRO; mount to table using counterbored bolt in center. - *32:31* Clamp swivel base down for machining ears - *33:00* Establish contact point, level ear, and set zero in the X-axis. - *33:58* Cut 50,000 off in multiple passes, and check progress visually - *35:44* Rotate part. Machine more ears in a similar fashion with adjustments due to part shape and clamp placement. - *40:18* All four ears on the swivel base have been machined flat. - *40:38* The next step for the swivel base project is milling out the interior of the main vice body. Disclaimer: I used gemini ultra 1.0 (2024.02.08) to summarize the video transcript. This method may make mistakes in recognizing words

That buffer adapter can be bought off Amazon and at good hardware and tool supplies for $5 to $10. Even Makita has one. They offer the 5/8-11 SAE size in multiple different metric sizes, i.e. M10x1. 25, M10x1. 5, M14. They also offer them with a male thread on both sides. Plus when you buy a quality buffer it usually includes that adapter with the tool. So it really wouldn't be profitable for Adam to mass produce them on his CNC.
@Orgakoyd
@Orgakoyd 5 месяцев назад
I think the extra stick out would be horrendous!
@anthonyp81979
@anthonyp81979 5 месяцев назад
@@Orgakoyd I agree. I think it would be awkward to use, and the arbor diameter is smaller to limit the diameter of the buffer backing plate. The larger wheels create to much load and snap the small M10 arbors. The better design has the female threading recessed inside the 5/8-11 thread. That way the only added thickness is about 3/8" for the wrench flat. Both versions are readily available online. They make similar adapters to fit larger diameter hole saws on smaller diameter arbors. I think those adapters are a bad idea too. The larger hole saws also tend to snap the smaller diameter arbors.

22.07 I have a little warning about some needle-files, as you mention, because once I poked my finger-nail using one of them, the round sharp one. Ow what a pain. One have to control them and not goof around, the triangular, and half-round tapered also pointy as well. You do not want to poke them into your hand or fingers, and certainly not through one of your finger-nails. The flat needle-file with a square end is of cource more or less safe, being a miniature version of a flat straight file. Also, they must at all times be fitted with a handle, with their very thin and pointy tangs.
