There's been a lot of convo about Swoope / Forrest Frank situation. I don't know what happened but I did listen to both of the songs to see if I heard any similarities?
Great job on this video. I'm a little partial on this issue because I've been a fan of swoope since the sonshine album. I also like Hulvey and Forest Frank both. Because i have young teenage musicians that hear music they actually noticed that's Surfaces Sheesh does the same thing I'd love to see you compare those two as well. I'm guessing Forrest Frank isbthe producer on that song as well. Again great job! I wish more people could see this unbiased comparison of music. I hope these guys come to a peaceful agreement because i love the music and what they stand for. Thank you and God bless you. I
Man thank you for this breakdown and addressing the music itself. I can see a lot of the similarities more clearly now. I was commenting on Swoope’s stuff asking for exactly this type of thing from him and he blocked me bc of it, which is disappointing cuz I’ve been a fan for 13 years.
@@BPlusMusicChannel Same here. I think we disagreed about what the root issue really is and unfortunately it seemed to me that he didn’t want to talk about the music all that much.
at 8:44 when you are comparing the 2 together, it may have helped to put them into the same key (no longer bound in C and Shining Down is in G) then there probably would have been an even better similarity. Nonetheless great video, I have a 116 Tattoo from when it was the OG crew, but i'm siding with Swoope on this one... sorry Hulvey and friend
Thanks fam!! Just trying to talk about the actual music and not go to immediate talking points and picking a side. Obviously, the progression is similar ... I just wanted to lay it out and let the music speak.
I dont think he stole it. Yes they have similarities (the chord progression, the way the song starts, and the verses) but there are differences in all of these things (different key, added vocals and filters on the instruments, different lyrics) so it's not like hes copying exactly if he is. And then theres all the things that arent the same (the chorus, the ending of the song). Yes they do 'feel' similar but are not the same. Both songs are trying to do the same thing (Christian song). I think that forest definitely made this song from inspiration of Swoope's song- and if this is so I think there are enough differences to make it fine. (i also just really prefer forests song)

I agree, it's super common. Thought this was good chance to lay the music. We don't know the convo between them 2 and I won't speculate. My perspective, just because I hear race is mentioned, doesn't make me check out. I think good convos can be had. 👊🏾
Big Pun used that Brenda Russell song. Consider staying in the tension a little more when "race" get's brought into the convo as there's a long history of african-american artists getting their stuff "remixed" by european-american artists, even in the CHH space (eg katy perry flame lawsuit). I think Hulvey being on the song makes this a little more suspect because I have a hard time believing that nobody at Reach Records heard Forrest's song and had one of those "I feel like i've listen to this before..." type moments. Probably would behoove all involved to be a little more sensitive to the historical context
Yes there is a story. But I’m not claiming racism on a Brother in Christ over using chord samples. That’s crazy. Every major song uses mostly the same 3 chord structure in the mainstream. Logic and Jon Keith used the same samples, Whatuprg uses Frank Dukes all the time. (Granted he paid Frank) I think to assume the worst is not a faithful approach. Forrest Frank is not a CHH artists too, so why blast him cause you’re tune sounds like a tune that’s over 30 years old. It’s lazy. I don’t tune out racial conversations when they make sense, but this one is pedantic.
