Released in 1967.... There is a poem at the end of the original release..... Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bedsitter people look back and lament Another day's useless energy spent Impassioned lovers wrestle as one; Lonely man cries for love and has none; New mother picks up and suckles her son; Senior citizens wish they were young Cold-hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colours from our sight Red is grey is yellow white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion

You should give the studio version, with the poem "Late Lament" appended to the end. Actually, the whole album "Days of Future Passed" is a must listen, as it's a concept album where all of the songs are meant to be heard in sequence. Often, in live performance, Drummer Graeme Edge would recite the poem either at the beginning or end of this song. There are also a ton of other great Moody Blues songs to hear, "Ride My See-Saw," "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band," "Question," "The Voice," and, my personal favorite, "Legend of a Mind."

I cry every time I hear this song. It's been 50 years and I still wonder where she is and how she is doing. Damn this song all to hell its sooo beautiful and totally gut wrenching. Let me help you understand the lyrics. "Nights in white satin Never reaching the end" is referring to the satin sheets that she gave him as a gift just before she dumped him. The sheets didn't reach the end of the bed hence the lyrics. "Letters I've written Never meaning to send" with 20 versions of his letter in the trash to try and win her back he never mails the letter why? "Beauty I'd always missed With these eyes before" he's telling you how beautiful she was. "Just what the truth is I can't say anymore" this is why he never mails the letter, he just doesn't know if she ever loved him. 'Cause I love you Yes, I love you Oh, how I love you "Gazing at people Some hand in hand" seeing others in love just brings back the pain. "Just what I'm going through They can't understand" unless you have had a broken heart you can't understand. "Some try to tell me Thoughts they cannot defend" you just can't mend a broken heart. "Just what you want to be You will be in the end" he wrote this for her. He is saying he is letting her go and above all he wants her to be happy. And I love you Yes, I love you Oh, how I love you Oh, how I love you Nights in white satin Never reaching the end Letters I've written Never meaning to send Beauty I've always missed With these eyes before Just what the truth is I can't say anymore 'Cause I love you Yes, I love you Oh, how I love you Oh, how I love you 'Cause I love you Yes, I love you Oh, how I love you Oh, how I love you

This song was on an Album called “Days of Future Past” and on the album this song ends with a beautiful poem called “Late Lament” “Breathe deep the gathering gloom, Watch lights fade from every room, Bedsitter people look back and lament, Another days useless energy is spent, Impassioned lovers, wrestle as one, A lonely man cry’s for love and has none, New mother picks up and suckles her son, Senior citizens wish they were young Cold hearted orb that rules the night, Removes the colors from our sight, Red is grey and yellow white, But we decide which is right, And which is an illusion.” And was preceded by another poem titled “Morning Glory” “Cold hearted orb that rules the night, Removes the colors from our sight, Red is grey and yellow white, But we decide which is right, And which is an illusion. Pinprick holes in a colorless sky, Let insipid figures of light pass by, The mighty light of ten thousand suns, Challenges infinity and is soon gone, Night time, to some a brief interlude, To others the fear of solitude, Brave Helios wake up your steed, Bring the warmth the countryside needs” Poems were written by the drummer Graem Edge.

In my "humble" opinion, this is the greatest love song ever. The rising and falling of so many different kinds of instruments, the lyrics, the vocals from beautiful harmony to voice cracking pain. In my experience, this ranks up there with Shakespeare's ability to describe love in poetry. All these decades later, I still get goosebumps.

I believe this was from their concert in Royal Albert Hall in May of 2000. Justin would have been around 43 years old at that time. He is 77 years old now and still making beautiful music with his solo tours in the USA and UK. He is a one of a kind talent for sure. The Moody Blues were a special band and do not receive near the attention and credit they deserve. But those of us who love their music get it!

Justin Hayward, the lead vocalist, is still performing live and hasn't lost a step. I'd go as far as saying his voice is stronger live than in studio due to the emotion actually being more honest in his songs. I'd suggest you check out any performance of his solo-song "Forever Autumn" live in concert from recent years. If you liked "Nights" I have no doubt you'll definitely love "Forever Autumn".

I first heard the Moodies in 1968. I was blown away, as I was by the group Chicago and Blood, Sweat and Tears. The orchestral sound, the horns. WOW! I did a hitch in the USMC, and had myself together in 1973, upon my discharge. Saw the Moodies in 1974. Saw them again in 1977 and 1980. All the concerts were, as you noticed, heralded by the audience being silent as they performed. It was magical. Still is. Music such as they made will never grow tired or get old. Neither will it ever be composed to their level again. I am so pleased to have grown in an era which had such marvelous musicians. Thank you for your review.

This song is from the album, Days Of Future Passed, where the record company wanted to alternate The Moody's music with brief orchestrational interludes. Between 1967 and 1972, The Moody Blues recorded 7 albums which are the recordings that established the band as an innovative progressive rock band. The mellotron is used in these recordings and each album is unlike anything you've ever listened to. Of course after those albums there are so many others. Other great songs from The Moody Blues are, Tuesday Afternoon, Ride My See-Saw, You And Me, The Balance, The Word | OM, Peak Hour, Your Wildest Dreams, English Sunset and so many others.

The Moody's well is very deep. I was enthralled with them in the 70s, but it was The Story in Your Eyes that was first experience with them. It still remains a favorite. Juxtaposed with Nights in White Satin (still their biggest hit) will show you their versatility. The artistry remains when the tempo steps up.

Hey Aileen! One of my favorite songs of all time. I haven't watched the reaction yet, but I'm pretty sure they never actually play the ending of the song during a live version, which is sad and you should listen to the full version on your own time. Fun fact though, my sister followed them around for years on tour and the drummer proposed to her. She said no because she didn't think she could handle the lifestyle of either always being on the road or being left at home until the tour was over, plus relocating. Meh, to each their own. I think she missed out tbh.

The sheet music for the orchestral links are, I believe, lost and had to be essentially recreated. This is a good approximation and really conveys the sweeping (and often melancholic) sound that they were known for. Hayward would go on to have his biggest 'solo' hit with a song he didn't actually write, 'Forever Autumn', from Jeff Wayne's progtastic rock opera 'War of the Worlds'. Worth a listen in its own right.

I always liked the Moody Blues but became a huge fan after seeing them live. I remember them opening with the song Gemini Dream where Justin Hayward and John Lodge traded off the lead vocals and it was just so great I could barely believe what I was hearing. The entire concert was incredible. I have since seen them 4 more times. ❤

I love your reactions to various musical bands. I feel that you are very honest with your reactions and comments. Having said that I would absolutely love to see you react to one of my favorite band "Blood Swear and Tears". The song "And when I die" or maybe Lucretia Mac Evil". I really feel like you will truly enjoy the music. I could go on but I won't. Please consider this band thanks and keep doing what you do we'll keep watching.

From this same Albert Hall concert (which I bought when new on, uh, videotape) there's also "Your Wildest Dreams" -- and the finale is bassist John Lodge's "Ride My See-saw" which rocks the whole Hall into oblivian!

The studio version is one of the great recordings of the 1960s (the backing harmonies are absolutely amazing on that release). Not to mention the fabulous poem "Late Lament" that closes the composition. Hell, you might want to play all of "Days of Future Past" because of how historically important the album was as the birth of prog in 1967. One song you might really enjoy is "Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)", which is commonly referred to as "Tuesday Afternoon".

Aileen, I love your passion for music! The Moody Blues are so great, any song you pick will be a jewel. That said, you _must_ hear the long version (8min) of Tuesday Afternoon which is actually two songs (“Afternoon” and “Evening”) that blend perfectly from the “Days of Future Passed” album. Also hear their most popular banger, “The Story in your Eyes,” “the Voice,” and “Wildest Dreams.” You’ll love them all.

This was a track from a concept album by The Moody Blues called "Days of Future Past". It musically tells of a Journeyman's day from morning to night. At the time, rock bands didn't use orchestras in their music. My favorite Moody Blues song is "Question" from the album "Question of Balance."

So glad you enjoyed on of my recommendations ! So many in their catalogue I think you would enjoy , but narrowing it down to 3. Their up tempo , vibrant Ride My See- Saw which they usually save for an encore at concerts . Their sonic masterpiece Tuesday Afternoon which showcases the bands penchant for storytelling and Justin Hayward's ethereal vocals . Finally , one of my personal favorites - Legend Of A Mind This is an ode to Timothy Leary , and is a sonic journey that features the flute work of the late Ray Thomas. Great version from The Royal Albert Hall in 2000 ( remastered ) ..

Oh yah this is one of the greatest mood pieces in rock'n'roll history. If you want to hear their more rockin' rockin' out, the next go-to song has to be "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock'n'Roll Band." It's an absolute freight train of steadily building sound and tempo, with a voice collectively shouting out for meaning/answers in an impartial universe.

The first memory I have of this song is it playing in the first season of Wiseguy (1987) as a backing track to the confrontation between Ken Wahl and Ray Sharkey. One of the best uses of music to deepen the scene.

This came out when I was in primary school In Australia,I was about 7 yrs old, and thought that it was the most beautiful piece of music that I had ever heard. It still has an affect on my soul, as does Pink Floyd. Just stunning!

The fathers of progressive rock. This is from the first concept album, way back in 1967. Their "core seven" albums are required listening. They only recently stopped touring as a group. Justin and John still tour with their own bands, making more great moments for audiences everywhere.

This is about their 40th anniversary of this song. Justin Hayward (singing) joined the group at age 19 and helped make them world famous, because he also wrote this one and others. Ray Thomas on flute here wrote LEGEND OF A MIND, and there's a youtube recording of them performing it circa 1969 you should see. We were spoiled by some of the best ear candy ever recorded ('60s, '70s, '80s)- maybe you can understand why so many of us hold modern 'music' in contempt.
