The last line, "Mother does it need to be so high?" Refers to "the wall"...which is his psychological "wall" which he builds to protect himself from the world.
It is a wall that he eventually gets mentally imprisoned behind with every brick of the wall. Mother, due to overprotective nature provides another brick in the wall. The whole album is a story/concept of his journey from childhood to love to betrayal to fame and finally to insanity.
@@StaceyRPGReactsLove your reactions so much. Definitely check out Money from their iconic Dark Side of the Moon album. It's such a banger and you will be so engaged I promise you. It was a huge hit.
Mother is actually a really sad song, it’s about an overbearing mum Molly coddling her son by not letting him be a boy and do the things he wants to. This is because she lost her husband in the war and is terrified of losing her son. It's all done through love, but has a negative effect on him creating bricks in his wall of isolation. That's why he says at the end, "Mother did it need to be so high". Also, when a song can affect you so greatly it's powerful, there's nothing wrong with exposing yourself to those feelings and especially appreciating your Mom.
I believe, Roger Waters put multiple meanings to this line. It could mean at the same time, "did the wall need to be so high?", "why did I grow up?", and "did it need to be junked up?"
Well, you have to remember that Pink never, ever, ever takes responsibility for himself. He always lays it on Them, They. Never I. So with this song, so with the album. His father, mother, wife, etc... This song he blames his mother for helping build the wall because she was protective. While it might be that his mother actually did overprotect to some degree, none of the things he mentions are necessarily bad things (Mother will find out where you've been, etc). Even the Mother I will put all my fears into you, is something every parent should probably do to some degree. I mean, unless you think a child should touch the fire to learn it is dangerous instead of telling them it is dangerous. Many say the song is about a bad mother. When it is coming from Pink, you should take the lesson with some amount of skepticism.
@stanleymyrick4068 You hit it right on the head. I constantly see commentary about how the mother character was a detriment and a negative aspect of Pink's life, but you're absolutely right that it was done out of love and a fear of losing her son. I also am glad to see someone else point out that Pink never takes responsibility for anything, and that it's always everyone else at fault. Maybe in that sense, Roger truly is Pink.
One reason why its so different from any of their songs you've heard is that it has Rodger Waters on vocals, who left the band in 1985. I'd recommend reacting to Echoes live at Pompeii to see the 4 primary members after Syd Barrett's tragic departure from the band.
Of course after you listen to the album, then watch the movie. The movie literally caused my ex-wife mental issues. It truly disturbed her deeply. The movie actually started our eventual breakup.
@@juliem6696 yup. The record changed me when I was a teen. Not just as a musician but also as a person. I still find symbolism I've missed. Imho it's one of the best records ever made. Rush "moving pictures" is a close second.
This particular mother wasn't such a force for good. "Mama will always find out where you been" "Mama's gonna put all of her fears into you." "She won't let you fly, but she might let you sing" It's really not up for debate. It's not a loving tribute to mom, despite the light melody and arrangement.
She lost her husband and her childs father in a war that never should have happened, she lived in constant terror from air raids, invasions. Imagine being HER then and there. I think we would all come away from that damaged.
the lyric at the end ties in perfectly,,if you pay attention to the previous lyrics, "mother should i build a wall?",,,,,,later on dave sings "of course mothers going to help build a wall",,,,building a wall up around himself, and in the end he asks "mother did it need to be so high?" this is precisely why its meant to be listened to as a whole album
Well said….taken piece by piece you cannot get the whole story of the Wall. Should listen to the whole album a few times and also should see the movie for a different perspective.
Roger Walters created this whole concept of a psychological wall to protect himself from the world in this album. In the case of this song, the wall that mothers build to protect their children, but which can be harmful despite good intentions.
This song is about an overbearing mother who won't let her child grow. She lost her husband in WWII. So now she's overly protective and won't let her son make his own choices and decisions. It's not about him asking his mother these questions. It's that he has to. She won't let him think for himself and have control over his own life. She controls every aspect of his life. It's a beautiful song musically (one of my favorites), but the story it tells in its lyrics is incredibly dark and insidious. Every time I hear the line, "Mother, didn't need to be so high," I wonder if he means high as in high on drugs or if he means high as in high and mighty acting.
The Physical appearences of nerds has changed A LOT since I was young! The song is about Roger Waters mothers overprotectiveness, after his father died in WW2.
Hello Stacey. Here is some quick info on what you have reacted to so far with Pink Floyd. The video versions of Comfortably Numb, On The Turning Away and Wish You Were Here were from the days after David Gilmour took over the rights to Pink Floyd after their original founder, Roger Waters, tried to put the band to rest. There was a lot of friction in the band between him and the other members leading up to the production of The Wall. David Gilmour and Roger Waters fought a lengthy court battle over the musical rights, in which David won. Roger wrote the lyrics to all the songs you have reviewed so far except High Hopes and The Turning Away. The Wall is a masterpiece and it should be listened to in its entirety. Hope this helps.
Yeah Stacey, a lot of viewers watch reactions and the try to tell you how you should react. I’m here for you. You’re doing a fabulous job. The Wall was partially built by Mothers over protection.
I agree wholeheartedly!! Thinking it is sweet, light and airy quickly goes away when listening as a part of the whole album!! It quickly becomes dark, toxic and overbearing!!
I toured Europe in the Summer of 1980 and this album was being played everywhere. You couldn't walk past a shop or café where one track or other wasn't being played. It was part of the fabric of life and became engraved in the psyche.
You're doing great, Stacey! You can't get it all digested in a single setting and piecing through this album before exploring the "concept" is not a bad way to do it. In fact, this is lifetime album that evolves WITH you over your life. I'm 59 and I didn't "get" The Wall at first. I just heard the songs they played on the radio. The more people you talk to who have been influenced by The Wall, the more you will appreciate it.
I’m addicted to your Pink Floyd reacts because it reminds me when I first listened to them 40+ years ago. It’s allowing me to hear them again for the first time if that makes any sense
Same I was about 13 listening to this album, very influential in my early years, can't remember the name of the song, the flames are all gone but the pain lingers on, just remembered it, goodbye blue sky
To get the whole picture of 'The Wall' you first need listen to the whole record, then watch the concert movie from Roger Waters 2011 and 2014 tour and finally the movie they released in the beginning of the 80s. The movie by director Alan Parkerwill provide you with all the context you need to understand the whole concept behind 'The Wall'. The tour had an unbelievable visual concept. During the first half of the concert they built brick by brick the wall until the whole band is hidden behind it. The whole time the wall is used as a monimantal screen to show pictures, movies and best of all unbeleivable animations by Gerald Scarfe. in the second half of the concert the band remains and plays most of the time behind it. From time to time Roger or the 'surrogate' band appeared in front of it until the whole wall will be torn down after the trial 'Pink' (Roger Waters) is holding against himself.
@@neillenet291 - mama, like abussive teachers, ;ike death of his father in war, a bad marriage, drugs to numb the pain, etc., are all just bricks in Pink's wall.
You are such a transparent person, it's easy to relive through you our first time hearing these beautiful songs and experiencing the magic of this band. If I may recommend a song for you to listen to, it's 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' (studio version), but first, read some context about the song because it has a deep meaning and is dedicated to someone very special to the band. Greetings from Argentina! It's great to hear Pink Floyd with such an honest reaction.
Glad you like Pink Floyd...They are my favorite rock band...I`ve been a fan since the early 70`s when I was 11 years old...It does not get any better than this band.
Hi Stacey, I first started my love of Pink Floyd when I was 14, I turn 50 in a couple of months, no other band can compare... "Have a cigar" on the wish you were here album is a favourite of mine. And yes it's "Balls" "momma why does "it" have to be so high" My simple interpretation is "It" being the psychological barrier (The Wall) that a single mother can instill in their kids which can be crippling especially in young men, which is an interesting judging by the present societal Issues single parenthood can create.
My brother form another mother!, having Pink Floyd in your back pocket for 30 years to seek solace in has been useful. The band is from my local area, in and around Cambridge, I even went to school in-between the faces of the Division bell Album Cover!...@@adenauerlemos7926

I also started l9ving Pink Floyd atcthe agecof 14, I'm now 54 a true Floydian through and through. I will forever love pink floyd. No one does it like David does and he does it with such ease . His guitar playing takes you on an almost out of body experience transending time and space you almost feel as if you are flying
The drummer on this track isn't Nick Mason - it was a 17 year old session drummer brought in because Nick was having trouble with the strange meter, and this kid aced it in one take. He's Jeff Porcaro of Toto fame ...
Can’t listen to one song in the wall understand the songs. Get the movie DVD watch the entire thing and remember it’s about the life and struggles of Roger Waters.
You need to check out the entire Movie, Pink Floyd's "The Wall" to get the entire concept of the story. In 2019 I went to watch the Lazer Show at Harrah's Lake Tahoe Showroom and they didn't play this. We were so bummed. 😭 Happy belated 4/20😁😎
Following the trend of the band's three previous studio albums, The Wall is a concept album, dealing with themes of abandonment and personal isolation. It was initially conceived during the In the Flesh tour in 1977, when bassist and lyricist Roger Waters' frustration with his audience became so acute that he imagined himself building a wall between the stage and the audience. The Wall is a rock opera centered on Pink, a fictional character based on Waters. Pink's life experiences begin with the loss of her father during World War II, and continue with ridicule and abuse from her teachers, her overprotective mother, and finally the end of her marriage. All of this contributes to a self-imposed isolation from society, represented by a metaphorical wall. It is necessary to listen to the entire album to internalize and understand the story. Hug- ✌
Goosebumps. Reminds me of my dad he used to play this daily. Been listening since I was 4 years old. Just an incredible band. Lucky enough to see Roger Waters in the wall tour with him back in 2012. Best day ever.
When they first got together, they had a vision of ignoring all the rules of music to experiment with sound, all to just see what worked and what didn't. You can feel it throughout everything they all did from then on.
i was 16 when this album was released, being a floyd fan this album did not disappoint. it is so refreshing to see youngsters as yourself enjoying real music, keep up the good work stacey and please react to money and sorrow on the pulse concert
Stacey your reactions to all the Pink Floyd songs. So very honest and you get it! You take me back to the time when I was a Pink Floyd rookie. Thank you for letting me relive that through you! ❤
Stacey I just found your channel yesterday accidentally I do watch reaction videos sometimes but not always, so suddenly youtube recommended me one of your videos and after watching that I watched 4 to 5 videos of yours one by one since yesterday and subscribed your channel Loved your reactions and thoughts and the most interesting part is you react as a listener first not like a musician's reaction who always talks about music theory and all so if someone is not a musician he/she would love your channel to see your thoughts as you bring how you felt, how the song touched you emotionally One humble request, please upload a porcupine tree reaction video on your channel, my favourite band and imo one of the greatest prog rock bands of all time at the same level of pink floyd, rush, genesis etc. Please upload one time, trust me there are a lot of pt fans out there you will get to see on the comment box The songs you can try: trains, blackest eyes, arriving somewhere but not here, anesthetize, the sound of muzak, drown with me, deadwing(the song), the start of something beautiful, the sky moves sideways etc.
Stacey 1 day I hope you will consider doing a deep dive and listen to 2 other groups, Traffic and The Alan Parson project they are as unique as The Floyd but with their own special style. It's great to see you've recovered from your surgery, you're always in all of ours thoughts and prayers.
Referring to ‘the wall’- why did she need to contribute to its conception as much as she did? Through all her actions and influence mentioned in the song, she built upon Pink’s wall by being as patronising, overprotective and dominant as she was. In this line, he’s asking her- did she really need to be this way? Did she really have to be one of the primary factors of his wall?
Pink never took responsibility for what he done and became, always blaming others. When it is coming from Pink, you should take the lesson with some amount of skepticism because it is ALWAYS some other persons doing and fault with Pink.
@@stanleymyrick4068The beauty of music and lyrics is the fact that you can interpet them diffrently. For me, ”mother” isn’t his mother, it’s the reign.
@@swedishgooner6339 What reign? Of course you can interpret anything however you want. Just look at my wife or daughter and they interpret things vastly different than I. But you are the first I've heard ascribe mother to anything other than his actual mother. I certainly haven't and I've listened to this album on loop. Watched the movie untold amount of times. Listen to it to this day, and I'm over 50. But it's your music too, so listen to it your way and no harm no foul, I say.
The song is writen about Roger Waters own mother. Forget all the nonsense about Pink etc.......The Wall is Roger Waters life story.....his autobiography .
@@Rassskle So Roger Waters was the leader in the concert where he called out all the people that were different than him and the riots and such? I didn't know he was such a controversial figure.
Pink Floyd doesn't know this but that song was written for me. It describes the atmosphere I grew up in. I am the youngest of 4 and the only son. "Mamas gonna keep you right here under her wing". Im 62 and to this day its a struggle to sit through this song (even though its genious). Your reaction was beautiful and Im glad I heard it with you. Thank you for that!!!😥
There’s a live version of this from 1980 you can find on RU-vid. It has a longer guitar solo. I understand that they had to cut the length of the guitar solo to fit it onto the album.
The Wall needs to be watched or listened to as a whole to put the songs into context. Watch the movie! Thanks for the review! Always love it when young people experience my favorite band.
The Wall is a life story, his father died, when he was young raised by his mother (single parent?), and his experience was just another brick in the wall (his mental illness).
I will suggest this one again: it’s the music video, Echoes - Live in Pompeii. It was recorded in am ancient theatre with nobody except for them and the production crew, and it was in the daytime. It was just before they recorded their buggiest album, Dark Side of the Moon. You would love it!
Pink Floyd live at Pompeii will change your perception of the band, seeing them young, in their prime, making the most incredible music you will ever hear, will blow your mind!!!
This is a song that truly would benefit from being heard in its actual place in the album time line. However it still stacks up as a stand alone . It is dark. Walters and Gilmour trade vocals brilliantly. As the characters Pink and Mother
David even with that said just listen to the lyrics to this one song without context and it is dark and not really what you would your mom to be@@davidmhewett44
I remember buying this album the day it was released. I couldn't wait to unwrap it. I knew right away, I was hearing a masterpiece. I then got the privilege to see it done live. Hands down, the greatest night of my life.
There honestly isn't anything sweet about it...its a song about an overbearing and controlling mother that begins Pink on the pathway towards building the wall around himself to separate himself from the world. Love your reactions!
To get the whole experience of this song you really need to do a reaction to the whole album.. it will blow your mind.. and you will fall in love with this band like we all have... Pink Floyd will always be the best band imo
Love ya! “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
Ms Stacey you’ll drive yourself insane attempting to de-cypher a single Pink Floyd track from a concept album, please understand that every Pink Floyd fan tried it and it wasn’t so successful. It’s bit like reading a single chapter from the middle of a book and attempting to predict who the good guy is and what the story has been about. Your at the start of your PF journey and there are hundreds ( here on YT)if not thousands of us who want you to have the best experience, forgive us if we try to nudge you in a particular direction. Your tears at earlier reactions are echos of our own ….
Acknowledging yourself, that there is a puzzle you haven't put together yet and expecting that the album in total will complete the puzzle was a wonderful and honest admission. I will guess that you felt this song a lot "harder" after reading the comments and listening to the other songs on the album in the last 4 months. Props to you from this random boomer.
Love Pink Floyd ❤ ! Soo many songs of them you have to hear , Hey You from the same album is a must , Sorrow from the PULSE concert is a must ! ...... ✌🏽
In its context within the album (and film), this song represents a bit of a sober look back at some of the reasons we've ended up in a very mentally unwell place. It's a journey through the mind of a man who has become trapped within a prison built by these formative circumstances, his fame, and his often ill-advised coping mechanisms.
This song always wrecks me emotionally. it's such a depressing and terrifying song in the album. With the context of the tracks that come before it, when this one plays I feel like I am going through the process of grieving for someone who has committed themselves to a trajectory of ruining their own lives. And even though this is happening, there is nothing I can do to stop them, or help them, and I just have to listen to the story as it unfolds.
Absolutely love your Pink Floyd reactions. Please consider listening to the studio version of Pink Floyd's "Shine on you Crazy Diamond " looking forward to your next musical adventure.

Stacy This classic was written by Bassist and one of the founders of Pink Floyd, Roger Waters. He is main singer of this classic. Roger was born in 1943 during WWII when Britian getting bombarded by Germans. His father was at 1st a pacifist. Then he changed his stance of the war and joined the Army. But in February of 1944, Roger's father was killed in action at the Battle of Anzio (Italy). Roger wasn't even a year old yet when his father was killed in action. I believe that his mother was overprotective of him and his older brother. So, Roger wrote this song for Wall Album and its movie about British singer named Pink (Bob Geldof, he is the driving force for Live Aid concert events)
Hi Stacey 🖐️ just wanted to tell you that I've been enjoying watching your journey into the amazing Pink Floyd. They have always been one of my favorite bands.
