A neurological study was done observing the brain response in people listening to this, and because the pleasure reaction was so extreme, it was considered the happiest song ever written. Some might dispute this now with the advent of other songs, but it's not hard to believe it could be that awesome. Thanks for your fantastic take on this!
I remember nearly a decade ago, I was a drug addict and deep into my depression. My best friend must have noticed when I got into his car. He played this song and sang along with it. I just remembered feeling happy listening...
Interesting! I would probably say it's Mr. Blue Sky by ELO for me, that song always makes me smile ear to ear no matter what I'm going through. But this song also get's me going when I'm feeling down too, so I can totally see that!
I've always believed this was about keeping your morals and judgments to yourself, because, just for tonight, cuz I'm going to do whatever I want today and nobody's going to stop me!
Never attempt to put Queen in a category. The next song you hear from them will make your last guess totally wrong. There is no box they fit in. And NO this song is not about drugs. (not that at some points in their career they did not indulge) but they never wrote a song about it! You will never know the real meaning of a Queen song. In MANY interviews both Frieddie and Brian have said they don't tell (or do videos) about what their songs about. It is up to the listener to decide whatever they feel.
Freddie loved "having a good time", but he was not drug addicted and as he said in an interview "No one can stop me, honey." He has lived his rock'n roll lifestyle, but on the other side he was a funny, generous, caring, loving, kind and charming guy. Queen is the most versatile rock band, they wrote their own stuff in several genres (cca. 15) from rock to jazz, to pop, etc. about 200 songs.
Queen is a Rock n' Roll band, at times they're a mix of soft or balled rock and hard rock!!! They incorporate every genre of music into their music like many other bands of their era, initiated by the Beatles!!! Queen was/is a over the top brilliant band and I have missed Freddie since the day he passed!!!👍👌✌😎
Hi guys. We picked this song to play at my sisters funeral, because it really represented her spirit. She was amazing! So 'don't stop me now' is imbedded in my life. So glad you liked it.
One thing that amazes me. Look when this group was out in the 70's. Yet everyone loved Freddie. Not a one person cared that he was gay. Not anyone even seen a gay man when they seen him. He was just Freddie a very talented performer who brought so many good memories for so many people.
Yeah I was talking about this with my girlfriend the other night. He was just an icon and nobody cared about his sexuality (accept the stupid press at times) and he was revered!
I don't think that's entirely true. He wasn't originally open with his sexuality from the beginning and only later revealed he was gay. And when he did, during the great AIDS scare, the homophobia ramped up hard. But Queen only got bigger with time after he died, rightfully so.
@@modifidious7171 Yes it was reported in the old Rolling Stones mag before it turned woke. Also it was pretty much known or excepted by way of Rolling Stone that Jagger and Bowie were both bi. True or not. The fact is it was believed and people didn't care.
The lead guitarist is an English musician and astrophysicist who achieved fame as lead guitarist of the rock band Queen. May was a co-founder of Queen with lead singer Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor. His songwriting contributions helped Queen become one of the most successful bands in rock history. At Hampton Grammar School, he attained ten GCE Ordinary Levels and three GCE Advanced Levels in Physics, Mathematics, and Applied Mathematics.[21] He studied Mathematics and Physics at Imperial College London, graduating with a BSc degree in Physics in 1968 with honours.[22] Following his graduation, May received a personal invitation from Sir Bernard Lovell to work at the Jodrell Bank Observatory while continuing to prepare his doctorate. He declined, choosing instead to remain at Imperial College to avoid breaking from Smile, the London-based band he was in at the time.[23] In 2007, May was awarded a PhD degree in astrophysics from Imperial College London for work started in 1971 and completed in 2007.
He was having a good time and he didn't want anyone to stop him. It really is that simple. Sometimes there's no need to dig. If you want a Queen song with a message/story try The Show Must Go On or Innuendo.
And Freddie had said himself that usually the lyrics don't mean anything. Its up to the listener to interpret them. Though I think BR is about Freddie and his struggle with his sexuality, it can really be about almost anything. From literal murder, to someone breaking out of the mold they were raised in and becoming someone new.
FYI: One of the reasons Queen has so many different sounds is that they ALL write the music, each has his own individual styles, but they all put everything they have in supporting each other's written songs, they play as hard as if it is their own song. They were all SUPER talented!
Couple of corrections/additions from your live stream last night: Roger did start out studying to be a dentist but graduated with a degree in Biology. Freddie was engaged to Mary Austin and she was his only true friend his whole life. Freddie had 4 extra molars & that’s why he didn’t want to fix his teeth as he was sure it would change the structure of his palate. Queen was definitely a rock band, but they played songs from all different genres. All 4 members wrote #1 hits, all could play multiple instruments, and all are in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Queen is the only one group, where every member wrote the number one song. Different characters, different songs. And Freddie liked to write and sing more genres of music…👑
@@sir_sack they wrote ALL of the songs that they performed. Sometimes it was one of them doing the writing, often it was a collaboration of two of them, it varied but all of them wrote hits individually.
@@susanengland3919 I knew they wrote all of their songs and that they all wrote a number one song. I just didn’t know they all wrote multiple songs that went to number one. I was asking which songs they were.
@@sir_sack I know some of them, Freddie wrote killer Queen, bohemian rhapsody Roger wrote radio gaga, I'm in love with my car Brian wrote fat bottomed girls, good old fashioned lover boy John wrote I want to break free These are just the ones on top of my head
Fred's voice, and that Brian's guitar sound, are two of the most recognizable things about them. But those harmonies... no other band was tight with their harmonies like them.
I really hope you'll check out Queen's "The Show Must Go On". It was written by guitarist Brian May, to chronicle Freddie's struggle with aids. The vocals Mercury achieves in that song, while sick, are amazing.
Queen is one of the most versatile bands, best guitar solos, most creative (broke the norms) and a true gift to everyone's ears. I once had a conversation with some coworkers about what band has the best guitar solos and everyone looked me like I was crazy when I said queen. Which was followed by "don't they only have one major hit?" 🤦🏼♂️. After listing ALL of them they were all shocked at how many great songs came from this band.
Yes, Brian did many amazing solos in many styles!!!! I love all of them!!!!! :-) You are well done that you teached some people! I°m happy about it!!! :-)
I love that Lex’s knowledge of musical theater helps her understand Queens musical composition. They married theater and rock in a way nobody else ever had before, they are both, and nobody else tries to in the same way because they know they can’t imitate Freddie.
I can usually tell if Lex likes a song by hearing an ooh or eeh out of her during a breakdown or solo. I lost count after a half dozen. When Lex loves a song, the finger wag will come out. It took about Fifteen sec. into this song for that to happen.
Probably clasify as classic rock. Due to his almost operatic performances, piano etc. Any way you want.... they will go down in history as one of the greatest bands ever.
Queen are so different. They are epic. Do live stuff and you'll see how different they are again live! In fact in many peoples opinion Queen are even better live. And the best live band of all time. Go live you won't regret it.
Brian May Astro physicist plays the guitar and injects space themes. Love it. PHD on interstellar Dust, after taking off time to be a rock star. Nerds unite.
Literally in 1979, one of the most popular artists in the UK that year, found success through the use of synthesizers. I'm talking about Gary Numan who had 2 number 1 singles and 2 number 1 albums in 1979, both as a solo artist and with Tubeway Army, I mean what you said doesn't make sense!
It is the happiest song ever composed. Thank you very much Freddie Mercury, John Deacon, Brian May and Roger Taylor for giving me great moments of happiness throughout my life.
I love the sincerity of your reactions. You guys are really considering and weighing the craft and the art, and I respect that. However, in this case, I am not sure I agree with the idea that it is a song about drugs. Seems to me that it is about the way Freddy Mercury lived in general. He was like a comet, on fire and burning through the sky and not about to be stopped or slowed down for anyone. His loss was and is a tragedy, of course, but it is almost like he was predicting it with the brightness of his genius. He is dearly missed.
Yeah, it's almost certainly not about drugs. I always imagined it's all about being high on life, being filled with so much optimistic energy that nothing can bring you down.
Great reaction! This song is somewhat of a throwback or somewhat of a tribute to Little Richard. Early rock 'n roll had a lot of piano. Check out I Want It All or Innuendo for some harder rock and progressive rock/metal from Queen. Queen did any genre of music, that is why they can be confusing. From 1920's songs to trash metal and motown.
This song is definitely pop rock. Genres used to be much less narrow. In the last 20 years , there has been a "narrowing" of sound and difference in music - in radio music anyway. There have been several mathematical studies on this.
@Phantom Freeze It doesn't have a church time signature. Plus , you could say the same about a lot of Al Green's stuff , or a lot of the 70s soul music. It was still the pop music of that era.
No, it°s not a pop rock song at all!!!! It°s like a rock°n°roll song dominated with the piano!!!! It°s a very dynamic and rythmic with the soul/gospel type intro and outro and harmonic chorus, bass and drums!!!!! Amazing song!!!!!
Lex. I love the way you work through the musicality of the song out loud in real time. We can see your brain working. It cool. You both are cool to watch.
Queen gave us everything from powerful emotional ballads to rock & roll, and all with the genius of Freddie, Brian, John and Roger. God bless them all for what they gave us all.
Lex nailed it with harmonys! That was part of their wall of sound! A Rock Group with complete sound , my favourite group and saw them in Toronto in 1981.
If you want a pretty song try Save me Live from Montreal 1981. It's It's beautiful song and the fact that it's a live recording will blow your mind. Thanks for another wonderful reaction!
I've taken Queen for granted my whole life, got a whole new appreciation for them having watched your reaction videos. (I don't normally like live versions either, but enjoyed your reaction to 'Somebody to Love'.) It's great. In the UK, I feel like almost everyone is familiar with Queen songs but for you guys, it was more an experimental thing to dive into and I love that you just go for it, with all these "new" bands you're trying out. :D Thanks.
The song is about Freddie living life. Sex, partying in general, etc. Drugs were included in that sometimes, sure, but it's not just about that. Freddie was a wild one and no one could tell him what to do pretty much. ❤
@@Danielik25 I know, but since it was Freddie who wrote the song I was talking specifically about him in this case. Brian has said that he didn't even care much for the song for quite some time because he felt like it was the beginning of losing Freddie to that lifestyle.
@@sannaolsson9106 Thats sonerhing he started saying in 2011 He said lots of times he didnt like it being piano based with barely any guitar In the 90s he said he was worried theyd loose fans esp America if they realised he was gay which he thinks was the reason after hot space He said he had a go at Freddie for having songs on the gay side He probably feels awkward saying that now He left David of 3 years for joe in 78 He had been introduced to ny clubs but not really involved until 80s Wasn't living a hedonistic lifestyle as such 78 when he wrote this
@@bluebell3720 OK yeah that sounds pretty problematic, but I honestly don't think that's how he wanted it to come across. I think he was just sad still about Freddie passing. He has said he rehrets that they didn't take better care if him(I highly doubt they could've reeled him in lol) and in hindsight he connects that song to it.
@@sannaolsson9106 it would have made more sense to me if he had said things like that at the time but he only said it from 2011 and stopped saying it was because he had issues with it having gay overtones he said at the time he didnt like it but didnt give a reason thats why he was asked about it afterwards he didnt like it having less guitar and implying sexuality he was worried about it effecting the band there wasnt any reason for him to be concerned about him in 78 he went to clubs the same as Roger did but he left a 3 year relationship for joe it was more during hot space when they were ott about it sounding like gay club music and fighting a lot over it he partied more
It’s a song meant to have a blast to! It’s not about drugs. It’s about making the best time wherever you are. It’s impossible to not feel like you can do anything and feel great when you hear this song.
The empowering song shows Freddie feeling unstoppable: "floating around in ecstasy," "like a tiger defying the laws of gravity," and "traveling at the speed of light." It shows how Freddie threw caution to the wind, putting himself in danger: "I am a satellite, I'm out of control" and "I am a sex machine ready to reload". After Freddie died of AIDS-related causes in 1991, Brian May told Mojo that he struggled with the lyrics, as it was about a difficult time in Freddie's life, when he was "taking lots of drugs and having sex with lots of men." Brian May later said: "I thought it was a lot of fun, but I did have an undercurrent feeling of, 'aren't we talking about danger here,' because we were worried about Freddie at this point. *Quoted from Smooth Radio
Their drummer was in Dental School when they started the band, the "quiet" bass player wrote A LOT of their hits and the guitar has recently finished his doctorate in Astrophysics... They're all awesome.
I soooooo miss Freddie. God rest his soul. He was one of a kind. They all had exceptional qualities and they came together, as queen and became the world's perfect band. There will never be another queen. ❤❤❤❤
It's great to see people waking up to real music by real musicians and not the dross that's around now with auto tune etc ,(which can make a donkey sound good)
Queen was considered the first arena rock band because they could sell them out. The fact that all 4 were professional musical genius artists helped. Every song is different. They wrote the fist heavy metal song - Stone Cold Crazy. Each member wrote at least 3 hit songs and all are in the songwriting rock hall of fame.
this is my son's 1st queen song he heard when he could comprehend music around 4 maybe 5 and till this day at 11 he plays it at least once, nest to bohemian, bicycle, we will rock you and another bites the dust. they all have to be played every day at least once.
guys don't get so hung up on the genre. there are broad genres (rock, rap, hip hop,, blues, country, etc) but good music is just good music. and Queen is almost their own genre, like Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin. love your reactions!
I grew up on Queen & rock & roll in general and I never heard this song until the movie came out a few years back……Big single in the UK I guess but not here in US as far as I know 🤷🏻♂️
@@charlesfitzgerald9631 Ah that must be why then! If you grew up in the UK you’d be hearing it at every school disco, bbq’s, events, tv shows and so on… it’s like a proper anthem 😂
I was actually privileged to have seen Queen live in 1983. Freddie came out with a sceptre and a crown and a purple cloak on. He threw roses out to the audience. Then they proceeded to put on one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
You are exactly right: Queen is so different. They've ALWAYS been different, and that's why it's not possible to get bored with them. One of my very favorite bands from back in the day (along with The Beatles, The Eagles, Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), etc. etc. This is an interesting song -- like the story of Freddie's life. He WAS a supersonic Mr. Fahrenheit. He lived life to the fullest, and burnt out too soon.
Why do u always think this "ISNT ROCK AND ROLL?"... Not to be rude, but that's kinda an ignorant statement! I feel like you think Rock and Roll has to always be hard guitars and guitar solos and definitely no piano??!! What? Queen is MOST DEFINITELY ROCK AND ROLL! the Beatles, piano and all, were considered ,Rock and Roll! Rock and roll has very many incarnations and sounds! It offers something for everyone! Don't like electric guitars?, seek out an acoustic guitar led Band (America, Bread, etc), Don't like that, seek out a piano driven Rock (Billy Joel,Elton John etc)... These are just.0001% of the rock offerings out there! But, pertaining to this video, as I said before QUEEN IS MOST DEFINITELY ROCK AND ROLL!!! It's an insult to think differently!
I feel like you guys don’t really know what rock music is. Rock doesn’t necessarily mean distorted guitars etc. queen are a rock band - they may one of the definitive rock bands
Great Reactions. I love the way Queen Songs tell a story and are full of feelings. Think about it...Find me Somebody to love. Now he has someone and he is Happy.
