Spare tracks are one of those details that can be more difficult to paint than one would think. In this video I'll try to make them look as interesting as possible while still keeping the effects somewhat realistic.

When I was on a M577A2 in the US Army Reserves, the extra tracks had a black rubberized paint on them. They stayed black for the 10 years I used this M577A2.

I doubt the Germans used that in WW2, but your point is well made. This is the typical over stylized weathering that is in fashion with some. Simulating 20 years of wear on a tank that survived less than 2 years of use in real life.

@@NightShiftScaleModels Well, lots of people like Camo Print. Maybe you could have Camo T Shirts, pants or hoodies but weathered and rusty. That would go so well with me seeming I'm 44 this year. While all the younger people can wear all the brand new cam, I can rock out with my Night Shift "Battle proven" Camo Hoodie 😎

@@NightShiftScaleModels I think that the most important thing for merch is to purchase something that has the broadest appeal possible, and requires you to keep in stock as few different options as possible. For example, if you wanted to have two colors of T shirt with the logo on them, you'd need to purchase Small, Medium, Large, X-Large shirts in both colors, that's a lot of stuff! Compare that to say, a trucker hat, where you only need one size because it's adjustable. I think that it might be worth considering making the night shift logo available on a print-to-order service like Teespring, which has no upfront cost since you don't need to buy a bunch of stock, and would allow you to upload as many designs as you'd like -- at the cost of taking some of your profit. The actual helpful suggestions out of the way, I think a really cool design for a piece of Night Shift merch would be a T-shirt, hat, hoodie, or whatever, that's olive green but has been chipped and weathered in the signature night shift style, complete with a stencil-style weathered white night shift logo
@JazzWithJakeInSF
@JazzWithJakeInSF 4 года назад
@@boryancrum2196 Good considerations all. I'd add only a T-shirt printed entirely with a close-up photo of weathered tank tracks. They'd look like abstract art.

I was a Guest of the German army on several trips to Germany in the late 80's and early 90's. We even received 1 brand new track link for a Leopard 2 on it's shipping skid. Being new it had no rust whatsoever, it was a colour we would think of as model paint gun metal or anthracite. On the Leopard and Marders in the field, there was also now rust in these well used and cared for vehicles. Indeed the track horns and area that the wheels rolled on were highly polished which seems to never be shown on models. I do still wonder how those clean track links would fair on the side of a tank!? They must rust eventually no?

I was on both Sheridan's and Bradley's and tracks from the factory have a preservative on them that protects from rust. They were all a black color. Every motor pool I was in had worn out tracks on pallets in the back of the motor pool and they were rusted up pretty well . But out in the wild, you just don't see rust on tracks because of constant movement, not even over night. But, coming back from field operations, and the tanks/ifv in the motor pool do get a rusty patina. But it's really not exaggerated. I would think in WW2, countries would have preservatives on their new tracks too.

AFAIK British/Commonwealth and US tracks were painted black from the factory as a protective layer. It wore off quite quickly in use, but I’d expect it to be visible on spare links. As Germany was short of paint I’d be surprised if they painted them though - maybe some red oxide primer.

Uncle Night Shift, GREAT job as usual. I think it's important to note that each track link was cast in one, solid piece. Depending on the amount of use/abuse each spare link or length of links might get, the rusting would develop accordingly. Links that have been part of the track run for some time would be worn down and somewhat pitted from use. This wear would act like a "primer" with newer surface rust more likely to form and be brighter, more visible. Conversely, spare links not used in the track run might be a little slower to show rust as the surface would be smoother and more uniform in texture. Either way, when it comes to achieving what you did with your excellent techniques, no one should quibble.
@markfergerson2145
@markfergerson2145 4 года назад
That's the point- that tank received spares from the factor and from other tanks with different histories and thus different amounts of wear and susceptibility to rust. Two links next to each other on the turret could be one brand new, the other went through almost the whole war, the next in line is maybe a year old.
