@@maniacfanofnfl8475 Calm down. You writing wrong comment on my post. Please delete your comment yourself. She is not record label singer. She is gospel singer. She doesn't need fame because she is already famous in the world. Sorry my English is not good. I don't understand Korean but her performance make me cry and really inspiring to me. I'm Japanese BTS J-ARMY.
We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese. Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-te_L9ofhUt8.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 42 on April 5, 2020, though in Korean culture she would be 43 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527 After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on RU-vid. Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on RU-vid and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and went to Japan in order to perform eight concerts together at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. Here is the interview where So Hyang related the events: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EqeE_1nP-Kk.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.) Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster and the rest watched on RU-vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T4UyIMkdy4M.html She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203 She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 which both say “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So Hyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding celebrity status from her. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rl-jX9kBsEs.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.) So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that So Hyang turned down yet _another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995 “Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said. “I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.” “And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via RU-vid, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.” So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble, open and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts. In Korean dictionaries 소 향 (So Hyang) has several meanings. • First is a type of Korean traditional music. • Second is to burn incense on a burner. • Third is to go toward. But these meanings are rarely used today and hers is a quite uncommon name. 소 향 is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. So in retrospect her name was well chosen, and you can take your pick! Please analyze her performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water”: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C6iHh4yBxCo.html Also, please react to her version of “The Power of Love”: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LrNkVRrK7_I.html Plus this beautiful duet with her friend Lee Hi where they do Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”: vimeo.com/439148918 And this version of her singing “Oh Holy Night”: vimeo.com/322716334 Here she performs “Lean On Me” before Michael Bolton, who called her a vocal “virtuoso” after her performance: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GvsgCllcNPE.html This is a wonderful Jazz inflected performance of “His Eye Is On The Sparrow”: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H1vppvq_F-8.html Wait until you see her duet of David Foster's “The Prayer” with Jeong Ui Geu: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rte-q3kunp8.html And finally “Will You Be There”: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nBdSpexUxik.html Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N2u_pmoWxj8.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews. OK, I’ll stop gushing now. Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang revealed that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VnPAkryrygQ.html I know, bananas isn’t it? Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published novelist and theological treatist, and a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Though she is less than 5' 4" and only 100 pounds, So Hyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else. As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉
She's adorable as a best singer as well as a respectable person. She's best but always does her best to sing and live a honorable life. That's why people love her..
Sasha, welcome to the splendid World of Sohyang. Tica's comments below tell you most of what I would like to say to introduce you to Sohyang. Instead, I will talk about your reaction. It was a totally honest reaction in light of your affection for Whitney Huston and your disdain for covers of her songs. I knew what was coming, but of course you did not. It was delightful to watch that splendid lady pull you in to her presence, her performance, her personality. Also, she's beautiful, isn't she? You will be interested to know that, for her stage performances, with the help of her husband and the musicians, she does ALL of her own arrangements; music, orchestra, chorus, and staging. As you see more of her performances, it is important that, because of your professionalism, you know that about her. There is much more. Please do more Sohyang performances. I would enjoy joining you as you discover her versatility and agility and the sheer power of her angelic voice. Every performance of Sohyang is a story told or a roller coaster ride or both. Perhaps you guessed that I'm a fan . . . . Cheers.
Thank you for the reaction and a warm welcome to the amazing world of Sohyang. Once hooked there is no escape. She is a ccm/gospel singer, cancer survivor and one of the best female vocalists currently on the planet. This is the best cover of this iconic song, and yet it is so easy for her. Look forward to more Sohyang reactions on your channel. I subscribed.
Thank you for a Brilliant reaction video:-) Loved this voice for 8 years now and their is no genre she can not do in her own way! Should qualify that I have not seen her do Country or Opera but give her a month for a song and she will knock it out of the Park! Gospel, Pop, Rock, Jazz,Soul/ R&B, and Yes she even Raps in a song called, Day,Day! You haven’t lived till you see someone rap in Korean! Crazy!! Thank you! Oh and Soo down below has an excellent list of songs this Angel does! She developed her chops singing Gospel so maybe give a listen to , You Raise Me Up, Everyone( 7 minutes of emotion) or Lean on Me, she changes style at least three times in one song! All are arranged by herself( with help from her small team and the conductor! Mona Lisa for some light Rock or a little heavier, It’s Only My World( only time I recall her using a dark voice. Day, Day, for Rap. Misty, for some Jazz or one of her own creations, Dream, which is Jazzish but not Jazz, think she wrote it thinking No One will easily be covering this! Traditional Korean but rearranged by herself, a 600 year old song which has taken on the wish for a united Korea- Arirang Alone( for be a Perfect Performance from her, orchestra , singers, solo violinist, staging, lighting and Arrangement, One of her best and best cover ever of, Bridge Over Troubled Water! Any one of the songs on the list! She gives her heart and soul in Every Performance! A few years ago she discovered that she had to stop being a perfectionists, practise hard( she rehearses ever song at least one hundred times) Then she lets her instincts take over and concentrates on delivering the message and emotion of the song! She never sang very much before she was about 20 years old and has been a work in progress ever since She turns 43 on April 5 th She has always concentrated on her Gospel in churches in over 60 counties( many times in the United States, her charity concerts and no more then one sometimes two concerts a year as she has had health issues and chronic pneumonia since her recovery from cancer when she was 20( about the time she got married) She also had a period of depression as a high schooler when he Father left her mother and they had very little money! She was saved by the songs of Celine, Whitney and most of all Mariah! She is often referred too as the Korean Mariah Carey , though they sound nothing alike but she Seward they brought light back into her life along with Jesus! She has down the Korean made for TV version of, The Sound of Music, is the voice of Moana in the Korean Disney Moana! Also done many OST’s which are the theme song for Korean dramas, Performed at the Korean Olympic/ Special Olympics, had the Korean competitors in ice dance performances to her, Arirang Alone , First Korean to sing the American Anthem at an NBA game, written multiple successful Fantasy Novel , written several of her own songs, teaches Performance and Voice at a Korean University as Guest Lecturer for several years now! Just such an Artist and Humanitarian, who wants to help those who suffer in any way! Sorry I could go on for hours but I fear I have gotten carried away !
Saaaaasha, Already sub’d for✨DQ but OMG now✨SoHyang, who is equally my Fav - I AM SCREAMING‼️ ✨SoHyang is not of this world (an Angel)! When she began this, she’d just finished hitting a long D6 in a grueling perf of her own song “Dream”. I absolutely loved this, you’re one of my FAVS. Your videos, analysis & production are next level! 🤍Tica🇺🇸
PERFECTLY SPLENDID, from everything that I know about So Hyang she is completely a self taught singer, with just a few tiny pointer lessons from Seth Riggs when she visited the US. She says that she learned how to sing from Mariah Carey's "Music Box" CD. She is also a self taught speaker of English, from watching English movies when she was a kid. Actually, she speaks four languages and is, from what I can tell, a genius level person. Some people can just do these things, and she is clearly sharp as a tack.
I think the stress you said something about...is planned Kim, So Hyang re-arranges ALL her own music AND in this song she started out behind the beat on propose... The back-up singers are hers and the Band has been coached by Kim, So Hyang on what she wants, so the beginning was totally planned on her Part Alot of Her smile comes from being a Cancer survivor Kim, So Hyang has always struggled with her health during her lifetime with those many illnesses.. uterine cancer, hepatitis, chronic pneumonia, etc.. The night she sung You Raise Me Up She just got out of Hospital and was advised Not to sing...So she did that....lol It's really a miracle this one of the most skilled vocalist of all time could be in such poor condition. And definitely she is much more than great technician and has Perfect Control of Her Gift...and Her singing is so special. So Being a Cancer survivor And still gets sick from Time to time. But is an Amazing Artist who gave up a Kpop career to sing for the Lord and for the Love of Music instead of stardom. She learned English as a Child from Disney Movies, which inspired her to Write two of her Books...(both Published and there are more). Also And Publicly thanks Mariah Carey for teaching her everything she Knows about Music ... that is some Testament to The Power of Music Kim So Hyang's vocal type is a Full Lyric Soprano. Her showcased vocal range spans from D3 to A6 (consistent supported range from G♯3 to E6),a total of three octaves, three notes and a semitone. According to So Hyang, the highest note she can sing is an E♭7. This means that she has an overall range of approximately four octaves and one semitone. However, this range hasn't been showcased to its fullest extent yet, as the highest note she has publicly showcased is A6. AS FANS AND ADMIRERS WE PRAY FOR HER CONTINUED IMPROVEMENTS IN HER HEALTH
so hyang--bridge over troubled water/i have nothing/o holy night/arirang alone/everyone/upon this rock/us national anthem/hero/power of love/let it go/breathe/hug me/amazing grace/i will always love you
Great reaction. I will give you a very good start list, if you want to here some more of her.. 1. "Everyone". 2. "You raise me up" 3. "Bridge over trouble water". After those songs I was a huge fan, cant stop watching reaction videos with her. Today I more or less love all her songs, and there are many. Thanks from Sweden.
Dimash and So Hyang the king and Queen of vocals nowadays. You should check more stuff from her. You wont believe. This is just a nice performance, she had some really unique! Try Arirang, Bridge of Troubled Water, Lean on Me, and Everyone. but there is a lot more... She's an Angel....
I really enjoyed your reaction. So Hyang takes a song and makes her own and every performance she shows something different I HARDLY suggest You to react to. So Hyang, Bridge over trouble water (on Inmortal songs) New Amazing artists like Morissette Amon, Rise up (on wish radio) she is from Philippines. Katrina Velarde, go the distance (on wish radio) Charice, Note to God (on Oprah) thanks.
how have you NOT done more of her yet?! "Bridge Over Troubled Water" "Arirang Along" and "Everyone" are MUSTS!! MOAR from the queen! Also, Dimash/Angelina Jordan as well!!
아, 리액션 정말 재미있고 즐겁게 잘봤습니다. 소향은 언제나 감동을 주는 놀라운 가수예요~! Ah, the reaction was really fun and I enjoyed it. Sohyang is an amazing singer who always touches people's hearts!
I affirm. There will be one of the few singers in the world who will be fully sung with her version. That's why the difficulty itself is high. It's not that they're good at all, but there are only a few singers who can.
Sasha ❤️ forgot ✨SoHyang’s not extensively trained. She’s 42 yrs old & w/ exception of 4 lessons w/ Seth Riggs, many yrs ago (who loves her) she’s self taught (even earning a degree) thus lectures at universities too! She says her gift is God given, but being a perfectionist; she practices extensively, warms up & sacrifices a lot to keep her vocal cords in good health. She’s got no social media & only sings to comfort others! 🤍Tica🇺🇸
Yr comments abt her singing is spot on !! In one word, she's simply amazing, in a class of her own, n d others trailing far behind her. Her vocal abilities r d real solid stuff, unlike d rubbish of many socalled celebrity singers.
Hi Sasha, I got really surprised when I see that you only uploaded a few videos so far. You seem like a pro youtuber already. Watching your excitement and passion about music is incredible. Please make an introduction video so we might know you better. Keep up the good work.
She lectures University students on vocal technique and singing and if I’m correct she is also a cancer survivor. She believes her voice was gifted to her so she could use it to heal and comfort people going through tough times. She’s an amazing woman and I admire her voice and her character🤍
Thank you for the entertaining and engaging reaction to the stunning cover of "I Have Nothing" by Sohyang, my favorite singer. Love your focus and passion. Sohyang also covered "I Will Always Love You" in 2020 @ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DO845EqU3eE.html
So you do think she did some justice to this song, right? (David Foster had seen this video and did approve it wholeheartedly.) I heard she taught herself to sing by listening to Whitney, Mariah, and Celine Dion.. etc. when she was growing up. FYI, her major in college was French literature.
