This is the most well-known Korean folk song - yet it is at the same time the least known Messianic Jewish song. The hill of Arirang is actually Ariel, which is the ancient name of the Temple Mount and Jerusalem. "Ari" means "lion" in Hebrew, and the lion is the symbol for Judah. In Jeremiah 17, Adonai ("God") warns that all of Judah's possessions will be taken by the enemy along with "My mountain", which of course is the Temple Mount, i.e., the same Mount Moriah where Abraham was told to sacrifice Yitsaaq ("Isaac"). The Hebrew word being translated "My mountain" is actually "harari". Additionally, Hebrew "hariyu" means "Raise a shout/blast", and this expression is used in Psalm 100 when it is translated "Make a joyful noise unto the LORD". "Hariyu" has a meaning very similar to Hebrew word "ranan", which means "Give a ringing cry (of joy)". So we can paraphrase the first line thus: "Tribe of Judah, give a ringing cry of joy. My mountain, raise a shout." Obviously, there is a parallel structure and wordplay here, especially as Arirang and arariyo alliterate, while "Arirang" is a play on the ancient name of the Holy Mount. "Arariyo" is thus a contraction of "harari hariyu", where the last two syllables form the first two syllables of the next word, thus concatenating the words meaning "My mountain" and "Raise a blast/noise". So this raises the question of when the tribe of Judah is being expected to "give a ringing cry of joy" and "raise a blast/shout" in praise to Adonai. Of course it is obvious when one reads Jeremiah 17 along with the rest of the Messianic prophecies. It would be when the Messiah returns and gathers all the flocks so that they can be watered. See Genesis chapter 29, verses 3-8: "When all the flocks were gathered there, they would then roll the stone from the mouth of the well, and water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place on the mouth of the well. 4And Jacob said to them, “My brothers, where are you from?” And they said, “We are from Haran.” 5And he said to them, “Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?” And they said, “We know him.” 6And he said to them, “Is it well with him?” And they said, “It is well, and behold, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep.” 7And he said, “Behold, it is still high day; it is not time for the livestock to be gathered. Water the sheep, and go, pasture them.” 8But they said, “We cannot, until all the flocks are gathered, and they roll the stone from the mouth of the well; then we water the sheep.”." Yes, rather prophetically, Rachel says what the Book of Revelation and other prophetic books prophesy will happen: the flocks will be gathered before they can be given water. Rachel, incidentally is a descendant of "Nahor"; and the book of Genesis says that both Haran and his brother Nahor were living "in the lands of the east'. This, to me, provides the best explanation for the name "Han people", which the Koreans have historically called themselves, since "HAN" could well be an acronym for Haran, Abraham (Jacob was descended from Abraham), and Nahor, who are named as the three sons of Terah. So far, the "flocks" of North and South Korea have been separated since the mid 1940s due mainly to the interference of the Great Powers. So, actually, North and South Korea is actually a sort of microcosm for the rest of Yeshua's flock around the world who are waiting the ingathering. For background, see the work of Professor Avigdor Shachan, who works at Ilan-Bar University. He has found much evidence for the migration of many of the ancient Israelites into many parts of Asia such as Afghanistan, India, China, Burma, Kashimir, Korea, and Japan.
Did you know that in Tigray (formerly known as Aksum; and before this "Sheba") and in the southern Indian region called Tamilnadu, mothers have been singing lullabies that go "Arari Ariro" since ancient times? As I explained, "harari" means "my mountain". So to comfort crying babies, what can be more effective than allowing them to suckle "my mound"? Both of these regions are ones where Israelite tribes are documented to have migrated beginning around the time of the Assyrian invasions of the northern kingdom called Israel in the 8th century BCE. It should then be clear that it is not a coincidence that there is such a Hebrew-laden song in all these regions having a clear connection to ancient Israel.
As a Korean, it is difficult to agree with the article above that explains the connection between 'Arirang' and biblical contents. Of course, some Christians may sympathize with the above, but what is clear is that the above is not the opinion of the majority of Koreans. 'Arirang' is an oral folk song that has been handed down in Korea for a very long time. However, the song Sohyang sings now is a re-adaptation of a popular song made by reinterpreting some of the melodies and emotions of the old Arirang. Three place names that are important to Koreans appear in the lyrics: Baekdu Mountain, Hallasan Mountain, and Dokdo. As some of you may know, Korea's territory has been divided into South Korea and North Korea throughout modern and contemporary history. So the majority of Koreans believe and hope that we will one day become one. So, Baekdu Mountain is the sacred mountain of our people in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula and means North Korea, and Hallasan Mountain is the second highest mountain on the island called Jeju Island at the southern end of the Korean Peninsula and means South Korea. Dokdo is a small rocky island in the East Sea, east of the Korean Peninsula. And currently, Japan is provoking this island (which it took from us during the colonial era), claiming that it is theirs. So Dokdo has become an important island symbolizing the history and pride of our people. Anyway, for that reason, in the lyrics of the song, taking a boat from Mt. Baekdu and Mt. Halla and meeting at Dokdo refers to the unification of Korea that will someday happen and must be achieved.

I only discuss the first two words: Arirang and Arariyo; and I also allude to the "hill of Arirang" that is mentioned in the refrain of nearly every version.
@@wannabeangus7105 If you study Hebrew poetry ("The art of Biblical poetry" by Robert Alter is a good reference), you will learn that parallelism and wordplay are the most common features of such poetry. You find perfect examples of Hebrew parallelism and wordplay in this song; so it is very obvious that this Arirang and Arariyo are of Hebrew origin. Moreover, if we expand the contractions so that we get "ari ranan, ari ranan, harari hariyu", the lyrics would even better match the melody and meter of the song. There is further evidence that the lyrics are from Hebrew. In Japan, there is a very old folk song called "Yaren Soran" (also known as "Soran Bushi", which has been sung by sailors and fishermen since ancient times - yet no Japanese knew what 'Yaren Soran" means, because there are no such words in Japanese. The Israeli Ambassador to Japan named Eli Cohen explained that "yaren" means "sing joyfully"; while "soran" means "ladder". Yes, you can check these things in any Hebrew lexicon: if we assume "yaren" has been shortened in a way similar to "-rang" of Arirang from "ranan", then the original would have been "yarannenu", which means "let them sing joyfully". "Soran" appears to be a corruption of "sulam", which in Hebrew means "ladder" - or it may have been an older version of sulam. Of course, when one goes to worship at the Temple Mount, one must climb the steps of the mount first. So the fishermen of ancient Japan would have sung this song while working in order to remember the Holy Mount and to remember the ascent up this mountain. Not exactly. The word and the folklore of "Arirang" may be over 600 years old. And the many variations of the folksong "Arirang" has come to symbolize many meanings to Koreans and their sense of identity. However, "Arirang Alone" is a modern adaption expressing the hopes for reunification of the South and the North to form one Korea again. I believe it was a father who, on his deathbed, pleaded with his son, the songwriter, to find his siblings once the South and the North are reunited, and to tell them he didn't abandon them during the Korean War. They were separated by circumstances. He tirelessly searched for them, and regrets his failure. That makes "Arirang Alone" ever the more poignant.
It's a folk song. No, it's a prog rock song. No, it's a sing-along song. Yes, it's all of those things made beautiful by Sohyang's wonderful voice, singing and arrangement. I think you'll be similarly wowed by "Bridge over troubled water," "Lean on me," and "Everyone"

Best singer on the planet???? Show me anyone who could do that better live. I had a similar reaction the first time I heard her, 7 years ago. I have listened to her ever since. Welcome to her world and all of us who love her.
Many many vocal coaches say that she is the best female vocalist on the planet. Nobody is cleaner and as polished in all the techniques as SoHyang. You won’t find her on the billboard charts. She sings because she loves to. She is not in it for fortune or fame, yet she is the best ever. Notice too, no ear monitors on her ears. She now wears them but this video was many years ago. She is so pitch perfect she never needed them. Now due to age, she needs to hear better but she still sings just as good and never uses auto tune. Her live performances are like a studio recording they are so flawless.
Not always, but quite often, So Hyang begins a performance in her angelic voice -- breathy, clear, precise, and reactors all think how beautiful it is, how like a princess she sounds. Then she releases her inner monster (in a good way). This is always a wonderful ride. She has more vocal tools in her repertoire than any other female singer I have ever come across. @@oahuhawaii2141 Exactly. But South Korea changed their national laws last year to calculate age in the way the vast majority of the world does, and now you are born at 0 years of age. Of course if people want to calculate in the traditional way they are free to, except for government purposes.

When they think of age, they automatically think in the old way, and have to remind themselves to adjust for the "new" way for gov-related stuff. Also, when considering the ages of peer groups, Koreans try to equalize by year, so they group people by calendar year. In school, for example, everyone born in 2014 -- from Jan 1 to Dec 31 -- is considered within the same age group, as if all were born on Jan 1. Thus, when 2024 began, everyone born in 2014 became 11 years old. A person born on 2014 Dec 31 is a year older than someone born on 2015 Jan 1. This is yet another quirk of age calculations by Koreans.

You are doing a good job on pronouncing her name. Arirang has no direct translation to English but the idea it represents is along the lines of very hard work or diligent struggle. The song is based on a Korean folk song that has evolved over a period of 600 years and now is an allegory for their desire to reunite north and south. Sohyang is difficult to rationally explain, especially right after the first time you hear her sing. She might have died from cervical cancer when she was 20 but credits God with her healing. Yet a bad blood transfusion at the time of the surgery left her with hepatitis B. Normally that is easily cured with antibiotics but this was the rare incurable variety so it plagues her to this day with a compromised immune system and she contracts pneumonia rather often. For a four year period from 2016 to 2020 she was battling it eight different times and was almost out of circulation in the musical community. Thus Sohyang knows what it is to be chronically ill for a lengthy period of time but again credits God with teaching her invaluable spiritual lessons from it. She has largely been fine since then but did come down with covid19 for two weeks in the summer of 2022. Thankfully she recovered well and at the age of 46 sings as excellently today as she ever has. You are right when the thought comes to mind that there is no way this woman is 46! She looks 10 or 15 years younger, at least! But it is true. She was born on April 5, 1978! 🤷♂ Professional "super star" level music producers (David Foster), singers (Michael Bolton and Josh Groban), teachers (Seth Riggs) and vocal coaches by the boat load are pretty well stupefied at how much talent is wrapped up in this tiny five foot four inch, 100 pound woman. Sohyang has trained her central nervous system to the point, and developed such articulate muscular control, that her singing technique is perfect. She is considered a master singer. Literally. Again Sohyang gives the credit to the divine entity, stating her voice "is from God." Obviously she has taken her singing talent to the nth degree, and tells others who want to enter the world of professional singing that they must be born with a good voice and then work very hard to develop it. But this barely scratches the surface of who Sohyang is and how talented she is on stage. Her stage presence and body language are unmatched in my experience, much like what Elvis Presley had fifty years ago but different, of course, since she is a sincere Christian woman and believes in presenting herself in modest yet excellent quality theatrical attire and with absolute confidence and purpose at all times. I have also found these high production value South Korean music presentations to be as good as you will find anywhere on the planet. They show Sohyang in the best fashion possible and these seem, to me, as good as you would find at _any_ of the Grammy Awards in their heyday. When you add a Super Star talent like Sohyang to the show, everyone who watches it is quite rightly blown away. 👀😮💥👌😎🎸🎙👽🛸💖💖💖
You should make a distinction between "Arirang" and "Arirang Alone". Also, Sohyang's performance is a reimagined arrangement of the folk tune to fit the requirements of the competition, Immortal Songs 2.

@ToddSauve: Consider comparing the lyrics of the popular version of Arirang sung in Seoul against the lyrics of Arirang Alone. For 600 years, they didn't sing about reunification by alluding to the tallest mountains of the South and the North, nor did they refer to an island in dispute with Japan. Those are relatively recent issues. To complicate things, there's Arirang the word, the 2 main variants of the legend, the dozens of regional versions of the traditional song with lots of local variations, and then there's Arirang Alone, sung in the traditional manner. Sohyang did a complete rearrangement for the show such that many Koreans didn't love it immediately -- she didn't win this episode. Her competition only did slight changes to the traditional presentation of their acts, but Sohyang made Arirang Alone very different, and that likely shocked the audience who didn't quite feel comfortable as they voted to give her a moderate score. The winner sang her song in a relatively traditional way, and simply added a bunch of men in the background to do a little bit of choreography depicting elements of the song. But as the years have passed, it seems folks slowly recognized her performance had outshined the others. [Consider how Hendrix played the US National Anthem -- that shocked Americans, many of whom found it grating on their nerves. I'm not a fan of his version, but it bothers me less these days.]

I call her the Korean Soul Repair Woman, on a mission to fulfill her promise to God, for saving her from cancer and through many bouts of Pneumonia still being able to sing for Us and for God! She is driven but not by Money or Fame ! She needs money and it’s nice to know all the years practicing your art you are good but God and Us come first ! It’s why she has politely turned to big record Companies down - 1. Because they would leave her with little time for Gospel Ministry, Charities, and Family. 2. Because of her health she would not be able to do long concerts , night after night ! Besides her own parents who divorce while she was in High School , her Father-in-Law is her manager and goes everywhere with her! Her Mother-in-Law also helps Manager her and is her Best friend, she Never refers to them or her Husbands siblings as anything but Mom, Dad or Sisters, she love all and they Love her! She joined Her Husbands Family Band( POS) as a teen because they had been practicing for along time but had no lead Singer, so she became their lead singer! Eventually fell in love with each other and decided to married! Both say that they felt pressure from God to hurry and marry! They did and as a result of the Physical the Doctor performed on her, Cancer was detected in 1 overy! During surgery cancer was also found in the other! The Doctor called her Husband and his Parents as hers were not there at the time to a meeting just outside the Operating Room ! Her Father-in-Law immediately said You must save the girl at all costs , if they want children there are many in Korea that need homes ( both her In- Laws are Ministers ) , so they did! When she awoke she was a little shocked but immediately thank God and her Family for saving her Life! One of her Husband sister was the Guitarist in Joe Jonas’s Band and all of the sisters have spend time living in the USA! SoHyang has visited them in the USA , and as a band They visited The USA many times sing in Churches or at Religious function ! SoHyang has in fact sang in over 50 countries with the band or solo later! POS has long since been disbanded! I would suggest your next reaction to be a Performance she did after just being released from hospital for Pneumonia and told by Doctors to not sing but actually try not to even talk much for the next few days ! She knew people would be at the Performance and needing to forget about their pain or sorrows, so decided to try to Perform anyway, knowing it could be the end of her voice! ( during one period she had 8 bouts with Pneumonia Over a period of 2 1/2 years! ) ( what with the cancer and Hepatitis she cause possible through a blood transfusion her immune system has been weakened ) Even during the peak of COVID in 2020 she join a TV show that featured her and a few other artists doing a Busking type Show, to lift the Spirits of Koreans or anyone at the shows or watching on TV ( audiences where selected through a draw and kept small ( 30- 40 ) depending on Venue and masks mandatory and social distancing enforced) SoHyang must have been nervous to join because if she caught the disease she would be in serious trouble) these were some of her Best Performance- though I don’t know why I say that she has had more then 40 spectaculars Performances! The only woman that deserves to share the stage with Dimash, which is why she’s often referred to as Dimash’s ‘queen’. You should check out her back story which will explain ‘why’ she sings & her aims & why she isn’t the world wide superstar that her taken surely merits. You may struggle gettin your head around my next comment having just watched her performance of ‘arirang alone’ but trust me, this beautiful human being can literally sing any genre, rock,pop, blues/jazz, obv the big power ballads ( the only woman who can make a Whitney song better!) & she can RAP, yes RAP, but her heart is with gospel & elements of gospel can be heard in many of her arrangements of songs that aren’t usually associated with the genre in their original format ( sohyang is responsible for all arrangements of all performances, she is so talented musically, not just vocally) & there are video’s available showing all the above. It is pretty obvious that after you’re first experience of this gorgeous soul, you are gonna wanna dive head first in to the amazing world of Sohyang so I would highly recommend that you take your future choice from one of the Sohyang fans that I’m sure, if not already done, will be sending you a very extensive list of performances, complete with the links. These will ensure that you get the right performances. Many people, myself included, usually start with ‘bridge over troubled water’, ‘arirang alone’ or a bonkers rendition of ‘I have nothing’ from the DMC festival, a performance that when seen by the writer of the song, David Foster, led him to track her down himself & has since performed with her many times. I would say that ‘bridge over troubled water’ is probably the start for the majority, but it’s usually one of the 3 songs mentioned. I know you will be bombarded with requests for sohyang so I would just like to say it doesn’t really matter in which order you see the performances cos tbh, this woman doesn’t know how to do anything but AMAZING & as you have discovered today, she has direct access to your heart, even when singing in a language you’re not familiar with. Yes there maybe subtitles ( watch sohyang via Vimeo to ensure eng subs) but I have heard so many people say, as well as myself, that they were so enchanted by sohyang performing that they totally forgot to look at the subs anyway, which is how it should be at the very highest level, music transcends language & I am English, it’s the only language I speak, yet time after time, sohyang has reduced me to tears when I haven’t understood one word of what she is singing, and it’s just not the odd performance, it’s time after time after time, so don’t ever be put off by something in her native Korean. I was goin to say that you wouldn’t have heard the performance you just have if you’d done that but I suppose ‘arirang alone’ doesn’t look Korean but don’t avoid anything written in Korean because you will be the one that loses out. Also, sohyang speaks English, she actually speaks a fair few languages tbh, has a degree in French, so she doesn’t sing with an obvious accent that so many of the Asian singers do, even Dimash, I love Dimash so much but he does have a problem with his accent when singing in English. Two Asian ARTISTS that never get the true recognition they deserve, MORISSETTE and SOHYANG, they are both in a very different league to anything else out there, both Christian ladies, both perform to express and not impress, SOHYANG being part of CCM, CHRISTIAN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC and MORISSETTE being part of the FAVOR CHURCH CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY, both have turned lucrative opportunities to take there careers to extreme proportions, they don't want the fame or fortune they just perform for the comfort of others, they reach out to everyone through there true love of what they are both brilliant at giving us, unrivalled voices that the world hasn't seen or heard before, SOHYANG seems to be ageing backwards as she is 46yrs of age now, MORISSETTE on the other hand is just 27yrs old and has the experience of someone twice her age, two greats who should never ever be forgotten, our Western ARTISTS couldn't live with these two unbelievable women 🇬🇧🔥👌❤️
