What I Think It's Least Great About Sonic X 1. It’s my best favorite and just first ever watched Sonic TV show not long after when I just fore the first time both knew about and played Sonic. 2. Anime adaptation of the modern Sonic games, especially just the first modern and my best favorite Sonic game Sonic Adventure. 3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cliché. 4. Showing flashback how Sonic and Tails met adapted the same flashback from the Sonic Adventure game. 5. There were least some CGI effects, forexsample the Spin Attack move, Egg Carrier vessel in few scenes, X Tornado in few scenes, Blue Typhone, Eclipse Cannon, the water, some explosions and blowing leaves in episode 13. 6. Sonic and his friends designs look almost like their 2D modern artworks, most human characters are both realistic and were less off-modeled and Cosmo’s species had great design just designed as humanoid plant alien species who seems they were regular plants evolved into humanoid plants and could be seen as an opposite or a counterpart to the anthropomorphic animals. 7. The english intro and the Gotta Go Fast song. 8. The Sonic head silhouette icon on the title logo. 9. The live action movie probably have been inspirated by Sonic X since both just have most similarities I love. 10. Although I do not like season 3, Dark Oak was least a great and darker and edgier villain who I want also to appear in the main canon game series and there are organic life evolve to robots and robots take over the world cliché plot. What I Think Sucks About Sonic X 1. Most episodes are boring, especially the whole season 3 is boring and only focusing on only one saga, both focusing less on and were rarely funny moments with the protagonist Sonic, not focusing on Sonic’s world, scenes and other anthropomorphic animals in the pilot weren't also in Sonic X and last only three seasons. 2. The series had low budget unlike most other anime. There were lot animation bump, there were little CGI effects, were only few soft-shaded visible and animated objects, the sky have better quality only in season 3, the simplified non-human characters were often off-modeled than the realistic and less simplified characters and both Sonic and Shadow didn’t have six quills even when both Sonic in Super Sonic form and OVA anime Sonic have six quills. 3. Sonic X is the only anime adaptation of the modern Sonic games. 4 It's never revealed how Doctor Eggman ended up on Sonic’s world and why he also have to go back to Sonic's world because of destruction and freezing of time when he's from Earth. 5. Still missing some Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 and other Sonic game elements and sources, characters like Metal Sonic and E-123 Omega, all the main character's backstories, Action Stage locations, level up items and soundtracks. 6. Little anime-esque expressions, effects and feelings. 7. No Christmas episode. 8. Amy is more annoying and even selfish fan girl especially in season 3, although she at the same time still seems kind and caring as her video game counterpart. 9. Sonic’s world and Cosmo’s species’ names are never mentioned. 10. The title name simply just named "Sonic X" and not have same name as the Sonic main canon game series. 11. There’s no“Gotta Go Fast” long song version. 12. The English censored version isn’t as much good as the original Japanese version.
Just finished the whole series with my brother on Netflix and RU-vid as adults cause we never had the time to watch it all as kids. Honestly I loved it. It’s terrible in some episodes but actually hype in others. Watching it all with my brother and making jokes along the way about Chris being a wuss in S1 and S2 and then becoming a chad in S3. Sonic being an asshole to Amy, Cream kicking butt in some episodes, Eggman simultaneously being a psychopath and a cool guy. And everything else. All of it was a fun and absurd journey that made me and my brother feel like kids again. 10/10 RIP EMERL
When a cartoon has a tune that matches an action it is called Mickey Mousing. It was first used by Walt in the early 20s. Even Looney Tunes does it. Sometimes even the Simpson's.
Thank you you’ve scratched my inch for this show, now I don’t have to watch it again right now 🙂 I have so much nostalgia for Sonic X it was a big part of my childhood
20:39 bit of an error. He said "it's one thing to actually hold people ransom and threatened them, but actually hurting them is other thing" not the exact quote on qutoe but he was just more mad of robot hurting Chris and Cosmo(mostly Chris in the situation) instead of threatening them
WAIT IN THE DUB IT'S COSMO WHO TALKS TO SONIC AT THE END? IT WAS DARK OAK IN THE JAPANESE VERSION AND HE WAS QUESTIONING WHETHER OR NOT IT WAS ALL WORTH IT.
The reason for Eggman making Sonic cooldown is smart if you think about it. Eggman was the one who made Sonic the way he is and knows a good amount of power Sonic has if he turns into Dark Sonic or even Wild Sonic. This can lead to him transforming into a new form of Fleetway. Causing him to kill anything and everyone. To me while knowing all of this felt like this was the best part of Eggman and Sonics development. It shows that they have known one another from the start since they know each other reason in life. That's why even if Eggman wishes to be powerful he knows there are certain requirements before then like keeping the people Sonic cares for safe. Sonic also doesn't kill Eggman or harm him because he knows that will just make him a villain, not a hero. So yeah for those who doesn't know much about Eggman and Sonics old lore I would think they would have shown it better.
None of that makes sense though. Of all the people to get Sonic to cool down, Eggman would be the LEAST likely to get that to work. Why would Sonic listen to Eggman about anything? If anything it would piss him off. So, stupid scene.
A bit of trivia: Season 3 was commissioned by 4kids and a French company due to the success of the show in those territories. The third season never even aired on Japanese television until very recently, it went straight to video there.
Season 3 was not commissioned by 4kids. That is a fan myth started by BlazeHedgehog and has no Sonic Team/Sega credibility behind it (Just like his incorrect assertion that Sonic 06 was ever a reboot).
I realized something while watching this review. I, like you, thought Chris' attachment to Sonic was unnaturally strong given how little time he and Sonic spent together, and I thought he should've felt more attached to Tails, Amy, and Cream since he spent more time with them. But then I realized that's exactly why he felt more attached to Sonic. Chris views his mother and father as his parents, even though his grandpa and maid (and also kinda his butler) are the ones parenting him. There's a deleted/trimmed flashback scene from the Japanese version where Chris was waiting for his mother and father to come home for Christmas, and when the door opens, it's not them, but Ella with two presents they sent because they weren't coming after all. I think all that was left of that scene in the dub is him looking sadly at the trainset they sent him, which makes him look spoiled and ungrateful. His natural, biological longing for attention from his mother and father, aggravated by their broken promises, shaped his attachment style so that he craves the attention of whoever pays him the least mind. Just like he wishes his mother and father could be around while feeling like his grandpa and maid aren't his official parents, he wants Sonic to stay and values him as a best friend more than Tails and the girls. Him kidnapping Sonic was him trying to take control in his life. He's never been able to get his parents to stay, so he wants to get someone to stay.
The hatred for Chris is often due to people misunderstanding the character because of the dub. You put it better than I could. I think people give Chris too much flack.
Good comment, but he didn't "kidnap" Sonic. Sonic was free to leave whenever he wanted. Grabbing someone's hand and running with them isn't kidnapping.
12:38 "And whenever Rouge comes on screen, a saxophone has a seizure...like...eVerY sIngLe TimE." As a musician and saxophonist, I find this line extremely hilarious. The saxophone riff does get annoying. But I get why they do it. Rouge is a sexy character.
@@-Gwa Yeah, 4kids' opinion on death never made any sense to me, with emphasis on Yu-Gi-Oh. Instead of straight-up killing someone, the loser gets sent to an inescapable realm of endless torment. "But at least they're not dead!"
@@jonahstein3034 Do you know how many times I hear the same shit being said about anime? It gets pretty damn aggravating and borderline disrespectful when people shit on English VA’s as if they aren’t trying their best as well.
people think , humans mystaking Sonic for shadow is dumb, I can totally see why but imo it isn' this far stretched, the only thing humans know about Sonic is that he's fast and can change colour(Super Sonic) so giving the fact that during Shadow stealing the emeralds the only thing humans knew was that it was stole by a hedgehog going at high speed at night, it is not dumb of them at all to assume it's sonic and he maybe changed colour, For amy it's way more difficult to defend because she "knows" Sonic but even for her it's debatable
@@dragonmaster3030 the idiot honestly thinks that the main thing everyone knew about sonic was that he was fast and changed color because he went super?? That kind of statement is only something that fans would think of; no character within the show would take that into consideration!
@@voiceacticon667 what you said makes no sense. I hate how the dub handled Chris’s episode, making it all like “oh but you’re my best friend, Sonic!” It’s different in Japanese: Chris asks Sonic why he’s been by his side all this time, and why Sonic went along with him instead of going back to his world, and Sonic replies “because you saved my life” Chris gets upset and asks if Sonic has only been with him because he feels like he owes Chris, and questions if they are friends, and Sonic says “friendship is free will” like you can’t force friendship, dude. Chris realises how he’s been holding Sonic back, and notes how in the past few days Sonic hasn’t even been able to run free because of him, and realises that he is a “bad friend” But in the dub he only lets Sonic go because Sonic is like “yOu’eR mY fRieNd, aNd we’Ll sEe eAch otHEr aGAiN”
@@EWOODJ Oh yeah, OP didn't even cover how manipulative Eng Chris was in the episode. He straight up tells Sonic he's (Sonic) gonna forget about him (Chris), cause he's always forgetful. Or on multiple occasions tells Sonic he'll go back to being lonely once he leaves. Chris only relents once Sonic went "okay I'll stay if that's what you want," and THEN Sonic says that "we'll see each other again" line. There's absolutely no coverage on *why* Sonic's friends with him or even went with him. He just rolls with it.
Not gonna lie: Sonic X is what brought me into the Sonic fandom! I enjoyed this show a lot and fell in love with the characters and wanted to know more about them. And before I knew, I was actually a fan of this franchise! :D
Me too! This show was my entire childhood. I don't think it will ever be tarnished for me, even with all it's flaws. Except the part where sonic and shadow are mistaken for eachother. Hated that, how stupid must everyone be??
I just hate how tails was treated in this and the games, like he’s a helpless little kid. I was happy when tails found someone to attach to and love(cosmo being that someone of course). To this day it irritates me how Sega treats tails as a character and keeps him in the role of the helpless little kid.
Cosmo is really underrated. Unlike other original characters in Sonic X, Cosmo was actually useful, as she translated the Metarex language and supported the group, in fact, without her, Sonic and his friends wouldn't be able to stop the Metarex. She is also adorable with an shy and clumsy personality who has air sickness and doubts herself. Her friendship with Tails is the highlight of her character, making the ending heartbreaking. Tails also was kind of an badass when Shadow chased Cosmo to kill her. I do like Sonic X a lot, but the flaws keep it from getting any better for me.
Oh right, she also with held that same information, went out to the meteor and almost got herself and Chris killed because of an obvious trap, and on several occasions, has almost gotten everyone killed. Did you watch the season or no? Her one redeeming quality is that she gets offed, because that was her purpose. You could cut out all the shit with her in it, and nothing changes.
@@mariomaster4568 I did. I'm aware she's not perfect and can be seen as useless. Well, even with those flaws, I still like Cosmo as a character. Don't forget that without her, nobody would know what the Metarex language says and helped others out. You obviously dislike her to an extend. We have our different opinions and we leave it at that.
@@charleyrodijk1675 well…did it help? I don’t think it did in the end. Tails was also able to decode the language in that same episode, even without her help. Plus, it was used once and never really again.
Flaws: Sonic (especially) and Knuckles are treated like male-chauvinistic pigs because female characters like Amy Rose and Rouge the Bat are treated like the good guys every time they hit S&K with Piko-Piko Hammers and Screw Kicks Pros: I shall wait and see after what felt like a long time since I last saw Sonic X. But I’n sure it has its moments, especially in season 3!
@@charleyrodijk1675 Who wants to see a Sonic Boom version of Cosmo? While meant to be a serious/tragic character, it would likely work seeing an older, sillier interpretation of our favourite Seedrian!

Shadow: Mine's still the one with the girl and the Scissor Blade. It's the greatest anime of all time and none of you will ever change my mind. -Sonic Twitter Takeover 4, 2019
The peak of Sonic X for me is in the Adventure game arcs. They do a better job at explaining Maria, and the Shadow line “Don’t talk to me about fair! NOT AFTER WHAT HAPPENED HERE!” gets me every time.
Eggman threatened to blow up the earth he wasn’t going to actually do it because he wouldn’t have an empire to rule if he did. So when he tells the Metarex that hurting innocent people is not expectable is actually in character.
Didn’t Eggman murder (or at least injure) a bunch of cops who surrendered in like episode 5? And he injured Amy a number of times. So yeah. That line doesn’t fit.
@Nigel Stoney Eggman deserved to be hit by a Piko-Piko Hammer more than Sonic. He was much worse than him (save for Sonic Adventure 2, especially the ending that got people to think he is, at heart, a good guy after all), especially in the infamous Meta Era where everyone was out of character and the Archie Comics where he sold Mobians as slaves yet everyone hates Sonic more for his woman troubles.
Ngl, even in the english dub, this show had some SERIOUS emotional moments. The top 3 I remember are when Shadow remember Maria and you see tears in his eyes, when Sonic leave Chris and you see his tears splash against Chris's face, and when Cosmo sacrificed herself. I don't remember if I cried in these episodes, I do remember getting pretty dang close.
I cried during ep 25 despite knowing that cosmo was going to die before even watching season 2's finale. yes, season 2. If I didn't have a soft spot for animals tho I would've been fine. screw tails, if it weren't for him (my second most favorite character in the series) I wouldn't of cried.
Molly's death in season 3 was even sadder. Rouge was screaming on top of her lungs. Eggman had a disappointing face and shadow was just silent. He had no reactions he already lost his old friend maria and had to deal with a similar situation, he just took off his inhibitors and destroyed the flying fleets without mentioning a word. Even at the end of season 3 he was standing towards her grave with a flower on his hand.
Probably best it stays as a relic of the past, with the attitude SEGA has with sonic we’ll end up with another overly self aware, self-deprecating show like Sonic Boom. I can already see them making Chris even more annoying and being like “LUL ISN’T THIS GUY ANNOYING WE’RE SO TRENDY AMIRITE?”
@@CosmicToad5000 there weren't that many of those jokes in sonic boom tbh. At least not season 1. Those are just the jokes people like to clip, and they are pretty unfunny.
Exactly it's not a bad anime but there are some decisions that hold it back. I like Chris Thorndyke but I think his charachter development was mishandled for instance and I think that's why so many people don't like him. Because his arc is started at the end of season 1, then dropped until the last three episodes of season 2 and it shows cause it's definetly rushed. Good and I get what they were going for but it really should've been spaced out more.
It’s an old show what do u expect? I hope there is a new season so they can fix the old personalities and animation and other stuff so everyone can see what a great show it is, in my opinion I enjoyed it ginormously that I (truly actually) fell in love with sonic
One thing I really don’t like is how undermined and sidelined some characters were. For example, Tails is EXTREMELY nerfed. We barely get to see his friendship with Sonic, he almost never fights (even though we all know he can), and he BARELY EVEN FLIES. It’s really unfortunate because games at that times were giving a completely different image of him. Amy is also extremely weakened (I mean come on they seriously nerfed her hammer and her overall skills) and Cream is shown to be capable of fighting, yet rarely ever does. These characters are sometimes only there to be there, or to end up in trouble and be rescued by Sonic. The only main animal characters who actually get to “show off” in that sense are Sonic and Knuckles. While yes, we all know they’re accomplished fighters, but the show treats the others like they’re nothing and can’t handle anything on their own. And yeah, Chris is an extremely annoying character who mostly stole Tails and (sometimes) Amy’s roles. Edit: also remember all of Tails’ fights in Sonic Adventure? He doesn’t fight any of them in the show. He mostly literally stands there and watches as Sonic fights Eggman and Chaos 4. It’s really sad honestly, since these games were trying to develop Tails as an independent hero on his own. Same applies to Amy in this game and Cream in other character-building moments in Advance and Heroes.
Okay this is coming from a guy who is not that deep in to Sonic yet but while I experienced Tails being a bad ass fighter in Sonic Mania, where he is my favorit character to play as, I found his depiction in Sonic X interesting. Its been a while since I watched the show but I remember a decend amount from season 3 and Tails is redicilioues in season 3. Yes he has little to no combat capebilities in this show to the point that even Metarex grunts are a threat to him but in return his tech geniues thing is brought up to 11. He build a giant space ship, with warp function, an energy shield, a security system, a hangar with multipple space jets, laser guns and that giant Sonic power canon. And Tails serves as both enginer and capt of that ship. What did mania Tails ever do in the tech departmeant? Build a plane? Hack one of Eggmans traps? Its as if Tails rearanged his skill points and put everything in his tech skills. Also the fact that he is not much of a fighter kinda makes it cooler that he still has the guts to fight to his last breath if he is cornered. Its been a while but I remember Tails being pretty dam awsome in Sonic X.
I think it's safe to say that the writers of this show had little to no idea how to write for a majority of Sonic characters. I also have a hunch that they thought kids simply wouldn't relate to them, hence why most of the story seems to be told through Chris Thorndyke's eyes. Putting so much focus of this human kid character was such a big mistake in my opinion! Imagine making a Batman show where most of the focus is not on Batman, but on some kid who goes to school! Then when something bad happens to him Batman just pops out of nowhere, saves the day, and we focus on the kid looking wide eyed and going "Wow!"
There's also the line in the first episode where the dub mistranslates Knuckles as saying "It used to be Chaos Control" instead of just "It's Chaos Control".
I really wish Sega brought cosmo back. It would be a pleasure to have a very great character like her back, she's pretty much my second favorite sonic character of all time while tails is my first. Cosmo needs more love! #Bringcosmoback
Yes and not only Cosmo, but I'd like to see Emerl, and Tikal. Sure people can say that their stories are done or that they're dead but come on now. There's those Sport/Party/Race games that could have them as playable characters!
@@Alex-oc1fu Emerl is sorta back as Gemerl. If you played Advance 3 it makes sense. He hasn't been used in the games at all since - and that's saddening. Tikal has shown up at least. I got nothin for Cosmo - unless the plant in Tails workshop in Chronicles counts
Yes, let’s bring back the character who did nothing but almost get everyone on the blue typhoon killed multiple times. Oh and also was a god, that too. Never explained when she gained that weird ass form, if she’s had it for a while or not. Her character was made only to die and so tails could go right back to being the Vegeta of Sonic media.
And I think the adventure 1 2 and battle adaptation could have been better if they just make chris a background character or they just don't make him involved with the adventure and fighters stuff and yey that's it becuase those arcs should only be sonic characters for these arcs not chris
You should have watched it in Japanese... There are entire scenes cut out. Seems kind of unfair to review it in English KNOWING about these differences but I won't go off about that anymore.
I have, its certainly better - reminds me somewhat of the difference between the english and japanese script in SA2. However, its still not a good anime. Plus it still has Chris Thorndyke. No way to fix that.
@@Ergeniz Ok that's fine. I don't consider it great myself , I just like when things are reviewed as honestly as possible. Sonic as a series especially could really use less misinformation going around :/ All that said I really liked the video, I hope they make another Sonic series similar to Sonic X one day just without some of its issues like shitty animation or Chris.
@@starstorm4077 I agree the uploader shoots himself in the foot by insisting on watching dubs. BTW, you can easily find subs of almost any anime free online if you know where to look, but I suspect he's one of those types that just can't bear to read subtitles.
when in doubt abandoned the dubbed version of the show in season 3 and just watch the sub in order to die mentally thanks to episode 25. Also let me talk about how dark episode 25 ended in japan. Instead of getting a happy outro song you'd get a sad song for a sad moment because the credits are basically cosmo gets killed, tails becomes sort of depressed, the end, although I still cried during the 4kids dub
You should've watched the Japanese version, the voice acting, lines and music is better. They even played Live and Learn when Sonic and Shadow fought Finalhazard. Also it is uncensored, the censorship really affects some episodes that involve death.
Sonic X is unironically one of my favorite animes, despite its cheesy dub and other stuff. My favorite episode is episode 19, Sonic’s Scream Test! The haunted castle is my favorite original location in Sonic X, and the Japanese version even has a unique soundtrack! I always wondered why the ghosts took almost everyone hostage and trapped them within some kind of demonic pocket dimension, and why the captives became unconscious upon being pulled into it. The scene where the ghosts begin kidnapping the castle visitors is my favorite for that reason. Maybe the hostages would turn into ghosts themselves if they were kept in that realm long enough? Maybe the ghosts were gonna eat them? It sounds silly, but thinking about things like that is why that episode is my favorite. It’s also got my favorite English dub line in the series: *”It grabbed Tails!!”*
The reason Shadow's character arc didn't feel finished was because 4kids (who ordered the 3rd Season get made back when they had the ability to do that) intended for their to be a 4th Season which the company teased until they went bankrupt. 4kids used to be able to get things made which led to Yugioh Capsule Monsters & the Pyramid of Light Movie in addition to everything relating to Viva Pinata. There are actually some fans of Sonic X who believe that 4kids actually had full storyboards for Season 4 Episodes locked inside some vault. I remember the days when people tried to pass off drawings of Metal Sonic in the X Style as being real leaked screenshots. 4kids going bankrupt in 2011 was officially the end of Sonic X.
Ok so, other than Chris and a handful of characters that have really high pitched voices(Cream in particular,) my favorite thing about the show will always be the voice cast. I really, REALLY miss J Griff as Sonic and Shadow, and Lisa Ortiz as Amy. For what it’s worth Jason probably can’t really voice Sonic any more, but I’d love so much to see him come back as Shadow. Anyways, for the show itself, minus FUCKING CHRIS, I really liked watching through it. Amy was my favorite character of everyone on the show, and the episodes where she got a lot of screen time ended up being my favorite, Sonic’s Scream Test(yes the nightmare fuel episode), standing out to me as probably my favorite episode of the whole show. Oh and, once again, fuck Chris.
Yeah the 4Kids voice cast is superb. Unfortunate that only Mike As Eggman has stayed on, though of all the voices to keep I’m glad it was him. Really sucks that Amy got turned into Minnie Mouse though. Heck I even like Tails’ voice, I don’t like the direction they took his voice colours onwards personally and I think it was the right balance between being too deep and too child-like.
Jason can still do the voice of sonic and shadow to this day even Lisa Ortiz as Amy. There’s a youtuber that invites those voice actors for skits and to play as their role they used to have in the past.
I'll be honest, the biggest favtor of me joining the Sonic fandom, was looking over at what my brother was watching on the TV, and hearing Sonic say, "Kids, don't use formula one race cars to chase Hedgehogs."
You lost me with "im going with the dub" at the start of the video. I really want to see a review from someone who sees the japanese version thoroughly, its so different i dont think falls into the "so bad its good" category
I watched both the dub and sub and I agree. It's two different experiences. If the dub is so bad it's good then the sub is actually decent bordering good.
Coming from someone who watched the sub, I agree. Everyone was just so much more interesting, especially the humans. Like how in the dub, Sam just goes by Sam Speed, but he gets a new name every time he shows up in the sub. It made me more excited to see the character. Plus, Mr. Tamara kicked butt in the sub. Even Chris gets character development in the third season. (Maybe this happened in the dub as well, but I only watched season 3 in sub.) Watching him be mature and actually useful made every time I had to see him mess everything up actually worthwhile. (Also I liked the relationship between Tanaka and Topaz more in the sub. It felt so sudden in the dub.)
I liked the scene where, after going home, Eggman and crew are making loads of noise at night demanding they tell him where sonic is and annoys Amy to the point where she throws her hammer at his "unbreakable" ship and dents it, horrified that she was able to make a dent in their super strong ship but relieved she only has one hammer, they taunt her with that "fact". She gets angry and in a blaze of fire her hammer spawns in her hand and they get scared, she throws it repeatedly at them and they run away basicly begging for mercy. That's what I remember anyway. Made me laugh.
Oh yeah, that scene was funny. I also liked the bit where one of Eggman’s robots shouts at Amy that the reason Sonic hasn’t come home yet is because he couldn’t stand to be around her anymore. That was brutal, dear god.
9:38 Season 2's ending was also the ending to Sonic X's Netflix release. It stinks that Season 3 wasn't added, but I'm also glad that there are no loose ends.
The sub and dub are truly such a case of “same name, different show.” If I wanted to get a kid invested into sonic lore and characters through a TV show, I’d show them English Sonic X. If I wanted to get literally anyone else on board, Or if I wanted to change the opinion of any person who only saw the English version, I’d show them Japanese sonic X. It truly is superior in every way. Chris is better (like, obscenely so - the way his dialogue is written makes his character a lot more palatable, among other improvements), the jokes are funnier, the serious moments land better, and the emotions are more authentic. The English dub also made a lot of changes/cuts that make things way more confusing and non-sensical than it should be. Overall, let me be another broken record to say that the Japanese cut is the way to go. It’s definitely still a show that’s fun to laugh at than to genuinely adore, but it’s still a “good” anime in its own right
Any time I learn that a show was first made in Japan, then dubbed in English, I assume the Japanese version is better by default, unless we're talking about Ghost Stories.
I agree with you that Helen should have been part of the main cast and not Chris. Not only is she far more relateble than Chris due to the fact that she isn't rich, but she also provides a nice contras between herself and Sonic. Sonic is all about speed and running fast. Helen on the other hand can't do those things, because she's stuck to her wheelchair. Sure, swaping out Chris for Helen would require a lot rewrites, but I'm sure that would have been a far better end product than the 1 we got in the end.
don't make me copy and paste someone elses comment which is longer then those essays they make you write in high school. But yeah, chris is bascially only like that in the 4KIDS DUB, because if 4kids is dubbing, what do you expect.
@@jed1458Did I ever discuss Chris's voice acting? NOPE. It doesn't matter if Chris's voice work was good or not regardless of what dub I watched it on (I watched the Dutch dub and I didn't have any issues with it aside from the the fact that The Netherlands doesn't have that many VAs compaired to other English speaking countries). The reason why I view Helen as superior is because she.... OK, wait. Now I'm just repeating myself. Go re-read my originel comment if wanna know I view Helen as superior over Chris.
Can ANYONE please give Chris a freaking chance and humans in the Sonic world a freaking chance?! Chris, yes, should have been handled better in the Sonic X show however he is not cardboard! I get that Tails and Cream would be a great wonderful stand in for Sonic and they already are but at the same exact time who freaking cares?! I mean don't get me wrong I want Tails and Cream there but we see them with Sonic all of the time as animal friends can't you just imagine if Sonic was friends with a human kid like Chris it show off that Sonic would be friends with just about anybody and not just those who fight alongside him and have high intelligence! Where's the fun in that if that was taken away?! Not to mention but yes I do agree that I wish that Chris' friendship with Tails was developed more for they really did seem like best friends yet one thing bugs me wait a minute Sonic had a stronger friendship with Helen than he ever did with Chris?! Are you freaking kidding me?! Don't get me wrong I want Sonic to have a strong friendship with Helen and I always wished that it was developed more but even stronger than the friendship with Chris?! WHAT?! Does this guy realize how many wonderful moments with Chris that Sonic had with him?! Sonic was there for him when he first rescued Chris from the hands of Eggman and in chaos control and let him hug him as Super Sonic, Sonic came rushing to Chris' rescue in the Sonic Adventure 2 episodes when Chris was up in space and came to his side when he was Super Sonic and Chris was passed out, Chris helped Sonic find the chaos emerald in the ocean in the first season alongside the others, Sonic checked up on him when Chris let Cream down and made sure that he was okay, Sonic saved him from Techno Teacher and Eggman in that one episode, Sonic gave him advice to be a better friend towards Danny at the tournament and turned to him when he had to unexpectedly face up against Amy, Sonic had courage in Chris to help defeat Chaos, Sonic encouraged Chris to get better at baseball, Sonic got super angry that he turned into Dark Super Sonic when Chris and Cosmo got hurt, Sonic was there for Chris in the season finale episodes of the second season and like this video said cried for him, I could go on! Am I missing something here?! I just don't get it and it gets on my freaking nerves that nobody else can see it! :(
Chris is shown to have a strong friendship with Sonic so many times. Remember that one time he literally runs away from his own family with Sonic? He also has put his life in risk so many times. We always see a Sonic x Chris relationship more than Sonic/Tails, Sonic/Knuckles.. which is weird
@@keeithrobinson4909 Exactly I was like wtf Sonic was willing to leave Tails, Amy, and Knuckles for Chris? And he didn't even question him. That was very weird. Chris also had his other three friends from school and chooses Sonic over him.. dude even left his family for Sonic
People need to stop reviewing the dub and using its vastly different versions of the characters and storylines as the metric with which to judge this show and its characters’ quality.
To be fair. In s3 Chris is technically almost an adult. So it makes sense why he's seems more mature compared to s1 and 2. But yeah s3 Chris is still way better than s1 and 2
I was watching the show on hulu and I looked at the next episode on episode 72 and um, well it only showed the to first three letters of the word assassin so Hulu accidentally insulted shadow lol. I'm pretty sure shadow is a hedgehog and not a donkey.
To be fair the 4kids dub makes the show a LOT worse, it's just kind of mediocre in the original japanese. Although at least they actually let Rouge flirt with that one cop lady. So yeah it is just better than the 4kids version. Which is also missing like ten or so episodes spread out over the seasons?
@@eternalreality3260 They're not missing per se unless you're talking about the 4kids dub, in which case just go watch the subtitled japanese version. I watched it like two years ago I don't remember which specific episode numbers they missed.
Ironically, Chris actually dies at the end? I remember watching the Japanese version as a kid and that Eggman fucking kills Chris in the end of season 3 when he “Went home” the capsule explodes if I’m not wrong
Honestly this show was a big part of my childhood. I wasn’t around in 2003 to see it, in fact I didn’t know it even existed for a while. I remember watching this show on RU-vid when I was 7, 3 years later I find out it’s on Netflix and I watch it there, 3 years later, I’m currently rewatching the show. I love this show. Me and my older brother watched this show and it brought us a lot of good memories of re-enacting it at the playground.
One of the dark moments in Season 3 was the space mission Shadow and Rouge went on, showing the meta-Rex and the what happened to the humans becoming part of a tree( if I remembered that episode correctly).
I think the episode with Helen is my favorite one from season 1. I remember laughing my butt off at the comedy but still feeling warm and fuzzy inside because of Sonic and Helen's interactions.
11:47 that’s only for 4kids because there are a lot of if not so much good dubbed anime like dragon ball and full metal alchemist. Not to mention death note, black lagoon, and cowboy bebop. You should watch the ghost stories English dub
The 4kids dub is almost another show, honestly there's a handful of scenes from Sonic X that I actually really like and they're all nonexistent in the dub due to the absolute heavy censors (including removing the entire soundtrack) 4kids do
@@Blurro Right but the minor edits they do don't mess with the story like the two examples I mentioned. The small things they do don't bother me nearly as much as the bigger mistakes they make that create big gaping plot holes or take away emotion from a really heavy scene. So them making a sign's text disappear I treat the same way as the classic "jelly filled donuts" it's weird but hillarious in how obvious it is and not worth getting mad over. Things like replacing Laboon with an Iceburg, or not letting the proper sequence of Cosmo's death play out are things that frustrate me MUCH more.
@@Cloud-dt6xb I hardly care about removing signs, the entire soundtrack is gone which is enough to get rid of s good bit of emotion. And the script is hardly accurate throughout the show anyway. Like I already said too, I've a handful of favourite scenes (which aren't what you mentioned). And they're literally gone in the dub. So there's 0 watch value there
@@Blurro Well I disagree with that because even as I rewatched it recently I still found myself getting invested in it. I swear to god every single time I get to the sonic battle parts and Cream's fighting with Emerl I get all choked up. Which is why it makes it more frustrating that they did'nt let Cosmo's death play out properly because I KNOW the actors can hit the emotion required for it. But that and Molly's death are my only big issues with the dub. The music they had I felt worked. I will never defend 4kids for some of their horrendous mistakes like the One Piece dub or the things I've mentioned for this anime, BUT they were'nt always bad and people need to realize that too. Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh, and Kirby were all very good dubs. Really 4kids biggest mistake was drifting way from the shows that focused on their target demographic, and not bothering to actually research what seemed like a simple series and not realizing how deep and dark it gets.
-Cowboy Bebop, Dragonball, My Hero Academia, Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, ect, would like to talk to you- Sorry, nevermind. I could go on but, TLDR: The idea that dubs are always bad is *dead*
@@BraviaGames Note how he said 4kids dub? Note he didn't say any dub. 4kids generally had mostly bad dubs, Sonic X being one of them for multiple reasons, though not it's worst... Generally though, if the dub was 4kids, it was not the version to watch. That being said, I agree on the dubs you mentioned being good.
@@MarioLuigi4567890 Oops! I totally missed that part. Sorry! I just don't like it when people spread the idea that all dubs are bad just because they saw a few bad apples.
If I'm being honest, I feel the scenes between Shadow and Chris worked fairly well. I think it has more of an impact if it's a human trying to convince him not to destroy Earth and the only reason Chris is able to convince him is thanks to the resemblance he has with Maria. I think the root of the issues people have with Chris is due to the way the writers mishandled his character. The serious problems he faces are told but not shown or are contradicted a short time later. It's explained to us that his unhealthy attachment to Sonic is the result of his parent's unintentional emotional neglect and because he doesn't have any friends his own age. The latter is almost immediately contradicted by introducing a trio of kids who appear to have been close to him for a while and the former situation is screwed up by the way his parents are portrayed that leaves Chris looking like an unreasonable, spoilt child who doesn't appreciate the efforts of his parents. It's true that he's extremely rich but that brings its own set of problems, one of which is potentially alienating him from his peers and another is that his parents think they can make up for their absence with gifts and toys. Concerning Chuck and the servants, another commenter (ILoveJesusMySavior) explains it better but what it boils down to is that they aren't his parents, and no matter how much they love and try, they just can't fill that void.
Thank you for this! I really hope they reboot Sonic X one day, with a bigger budget, better writers, and a more reliable dubbing company, if only for Chris' sake. He was done so dirty.
16:00 oooooh I love this episode. I call it the “Shadow goes full Terminator mode episode”. He basically is the T-1000 from the terminator series. Slowly walking down hallways menacingly to catch his target. Even though he can run as fast as Sonic he chooses not to. He’s just that confident he’ll catch his target and it’s terrifying.
When I watched Sonic X as a kid, I was SO DISAPPOINTED with how they handled *both* my favorite robots. E-102γ was made to be a nothing character here when he _originally_ had such an emotionally moving story. As you said, he came and left way too quickly... He also had the *WORST VOICE EVER.* Why was his voice _HIGH_ here??? He has the deepest voice out of the whole cast! Emerl was ALSO made to be a no one because, lo and behold, the Sonic Battle section was *over too quickly.* He was one the best written characters in Sonic game history with *ANOTHER* really sad ending. Now, _his_ voice was a travesty... Because _he didn't have one._ *WHY DIDN'T HE HAVE ONE?* He talks throughout almost the ENTIRE GAME, adapting parts of the personalities of everyone he bonded with... Yet they forgo giving him a voice. They honestly could have incorporated him into an entire season if they had followed the game a *lot* closer. That was a *long* game. A side note, Sonic named him ML *why?* What's wrong with _Emerl?_ Anyway, that's my first internet rant of my life, so yeah. Lol
I’ll just say my piece: I like the dub for this show a lot. The characters sound like how I think they would, and the scripts remain more or less the same as in Japanese. However, 4kids butchered the dialogue (and thus the context) so much that I much prefer listening in Japanese with subtitles because that actually conveys what’s going on. That said, this was only really an issue in Season 3, where they basically shafted the Tails and Cosmo romance despite it being flat out stated in that one literal matchmaker episode. Tl;dr, I like both sub and dub, and I have my reasons for each one.
I thought the scripts were similar to how they were Japanese? Were they similar or different? I watched both but it was so long ago I don’t remember the differences.
@@wannabehistorian371 In season 3, the scripts and censored scenes change a bit from the English version to the Japanese in some episodes, much more in the last 10-15 episodes. Dunno the other seasons, because I watched them all in English but then rewatched the last season in Japanese with eng subtitles, and the final ones were much better in Japanese.
20:39 Eggman on full display showing everyone how hypocritical he is with that one line. I remember watching this back in my teens. I may watch this series in it's entirety because I've only watched most of season 1, only bits of season 2 and rare episodes of season 3. It was made from a different time so it'll obviously have it's cheesy moments of screenplay, dialogue and overused cutscene gimmicks like how they do most of the one screen fight scenes like it's a slideshow. As long as it's appealing to me with comedy and emotion done right I'll give it a watch. You can't forget Eggman ways doing the noblewoman's laugh though every chance he got.
20:30 it is really smart how the handeld it, making Sonic so mad that he would kill and destroy everything and the only one who can stop him is is archenemy, and even eggman says he needs to calm the heck down, I think that says alot about sonics underlying anger and hatred Sorry if there are grammar errors, I am Dutch
(My current opinion) and also there might be mistakes on some sentences so beware. I like the characters in Chris mansion and Chris himself isn’t all that bad until like Ep 26 (Super Sonic introduction). Chris is family is okay at best, his mom is fine and is oblivious, his father is caring and I like that one episode were Chuck (I think that’s his dad’s name?) yells at him for leaving work to see Chris who had like a flu or just a cold and Sam is cool and I like how he’s like Sonic in some way. For Chris friends (one I forgot the one Sonic took to see flowers) I like her character, as for the others I feel like they should appear more so. I’m fine with Tails, Cream & Cheese and Vinilla is fine I guess, Amy is the worst since she’s annoying and she never develops, The Chaotix are fun but wish they appeared more, Cosmo is good but personally I don’t care. Sonic is good but he’s more calmer and imo it’s kind of boring but I do like most of his personality as at his best as when he took one of Chris friend to see flowers, Ep51 (I think that’s the episode before Sonic came back to his world). Also the boat episode but I feel like Sonic being calmer and focused (or something) was pointless as Ella (how’d you spell her mame?) smashed Eggman’s ship using the X Tornado (I think that’s the ship). Season 1 was fine I enjoyed it with it’s comedy, Season 2 also but personally not as much and Season 3 idk why but I felt like it was ehh cool but ehh idk why I don’t really care. 4Kids voice acting is alright, censor weakens the story and impact on the characters like Molly.
12:50 bro when he says this doesn’t leave your head, he’s right… I watched this as a very young little boy and find myself singing that shit randomly and I haven’t heard it since
