So I Got This Old .22- Now What? 

Another great video, Tom. Your analysis of possible issues payed off. Watching this video brought back memories of my old Model 80. I must have been lucky, mine shot consistent groups that looked like the group you shot at 25 yards using the SK Standard after your adjustments. I’ll always remember that old gun as being one of the most accurate .22’s I’ve owned.

Just picked up a Remington 514, was someone's project apparently, finish stripped off the stock and butt plate missing. Bolt worked but safety was bound up, disassembly showed a built up of old dried up oil and burnt powder, scrubbed the bolt body , firing pin, spring and safety switch, looks new and operates perfectly. Now it's time to finish the stock.

Had a hankerin' for a Winchester Model 61 pump .22LR. Haven't grabbed one, yet. I'd also like to add that if it's a gun shop, they would probably have a tight-tube style light where they can light up the bore and you can actually see the condition, even if it's a rather dimly lit room. I'm guessing those low flier shots are slightly diminished powder charges in those CCI loads. Might sort the ammo by weight to narrow the consistency.

How many times can you use the same snap cap?

Your accuracy is quite good. May I suggest a different bolt operation method. Your thumb levering on the scope may be affecting your point of impact. Try forming a narrow V with your thumb and trigger finger. Slide this V up the stock to contact the bolt handle. Raise the bolt to to disengage the lugs. Slide the bolt to eject. Slide bolt forward to battery. The knob is meant to keep your thumb and finger from sliding off not as a point to grasp. This method was taught to me by a WWI sharpshooter. Has worked well for me for over 70 years.

You took it because it was cheap . How can you check out a gun when you buy it on line.

Nice rifle and excellent detective work to fix the accuracy problem. I suggest you try some high velocity loads like CCI Mini Mag, Federal bulk pack and Remington Golden bullets and Subsonic. Some rifles prefer these at 50 yards or less. You never know until you try.

I have been looking heavily for a Remington 512 with the tube fed magazine. I want to set up a vintage squirrel rifle and love the look and the practicality of no detachable magazines. I am stationed overseas at the moment, but I should be able to find a good deal when I get back. I picked up an old Mossberg chuckster 22 mag last time I was stateside. Keep up the great content man.

How many magazines are coming with the rifle is important. Sometimes the magazines can cost as much or more than the rifle if you can even find them.

What if there is a crack inside the stock. Still buy it?

..looking for a Marlin 81c that my dad gave me 61 years ago on the night I graduated from 8th grade in 1963...leftvit behind when I mived to the free (so far) state of FL from the PDRNJ...

At 50 yards you had 3 touching and 2 flippers on a repeatable basis. I wonder if you bedded the action into the stock if it would clean up the flippers? 22’s can be sensitive to action torque especially un-bedded Woodstock ones. Bedding can cure the problem a lot of the times, but I’ve seen super precise 22’s that were bedded still be particular about action torque. P.S. another commenter mentioned Remington 514, that was my first rifle. Mine was wonderfully accurate, my fondness memories are of walking the fields, woods, and river bottoms as a kid with that rifle. Plentiful small game and varmits and land owners always welcomed a boy with a 22. I long for those times. The freedoms, the people, the values, the culture.

Good video. You mentioned oil seeping into the stock. I have a model 12c Remington with octagon barrel that oil has seeped into the stock. It was like that when I bought it. Is there any way to remove that, that you know of?

nice old marlin mod 80..ive got one a bit older i think no serial or safety and the bore was perfect looked brand new! it still dose and ive put over 3k rounds threw the old gal. its never failed to feed or extract on me. and it only cost me 99$.

Interested in an original Brownig T-Bolt. Live just south of Nashville. I bought it new and installed a Redfield scope. It has maybe 3 boxes obullets thru it. Bought new maybe 1970.

Love the detail and great job on the Model 80. I've got a video on a inherited Winchester 22lr that I was going to sell as a parts gun because it was missing the bolt and a few other things. I ended up picking up used parts and putting this gun back together. I think I entitled the video something like: Parts Gun Made Whole Again. When working on it I found that the barrel nut was backed out some allowing the barrel to move ever so slightly. I took it apart, cleaned the threads real good, used my barrel nut grease on it and snugged it down as it should be. As a whole gun now that thing shoots the one ragged hole at 25 yards. Like it should. Thanks for your video and the great detail you put into it.
