@@server1ok Yeah, cross faction is a big negative. But PvE isn't. You can just flag yourself 24/7 with warmode and fight anyone who fights you. That way the classic andy's like me and other noobs can still quest in lvl 30 zones without being camped and having to log off for the day.
The biggest surprise for me was how nice the community was on Turtle. So many patient and friendly nerds. I felt transported back to 2006. That being said, it has gotten a bit worse with the huge influx of new players earlier this year.
turtlewow had humble beginnings just shy of a few hundred players when it released. now you get lower quality players as the population surges to all new heights, mainly classic andies waiting for som2 or classic+. there are some nice communities here though dont get me wrong. I was in a dad gamer guild with just a bunch of geared guys helping out fresh 60s and they were nice as can be.
they finally developed an east server for the chinese players and (i believe? based on no more que times) region locked them out. chinese people cannot easily obtain a free vpn like we can, some tech literate can and do, but majority of them are gone
The sad thing is that a private server has created something that most players have wanted from Blizzard for several years and will probably never get it, and if it does, it's probably gonna be another product created at the lowest possible cost.
"lots of players" not most. Not everybody wants vanilla plus. Vanilla plus is but to alter Vanilla adding content that it DOES exist but in other expansions. Many old players think that is just dumb. Like, people wanting blood elves in vanilla... we got them in TBC and TBC was a great expansion, near perfect. In fact TBC feels like it could be just called Vanilla plus. Grim Batol was added in Cata. The Emeral Dream may be coming in Dragonflight. I am in a guild full of og players and my friends that also been playing since 2004 all have the same thought: Why? Only a couple of people felt like playing classic. We already did that content so many times... it feels dumb to go back and kill, i dunno, Nefarion for the millionth time... Those couple people that actualy made toons in classic, half quite before TBC, bored of playing the same content they already knew upside down. The rest do log in sometimes in a while when theres not much to do in retail. The "new" stuff added in Twow is just content we either saw later in other expansions, so already did that too, or content that got cancelled for very good reazons. Anyway, those are my thoughts.
@@josejuanandrade4439 Vanilla plus is great, yes you get some of the features from later expansions, but without all the dumbing down BS that comes along with it as WoW has become over time. The reason many still love vanilla and vanilla plus is they still want a dangerous, exciting world where if you even pull one extra mob sometimes it gets you killed. Unlike modern WoW where you can pull 3 or 4 mobs solo, then destroy them like they are nothing...especially when loaded up on heirlooms its even worse. And when you get that hard earned piece of new gear in vanilla, it actually feels great.... unlike modern WoW its just meh... Modern WoW is boring easy mode. And there are custom quests on turtle, custom as in not from blizzard that you have not seen before. Is there a sparkwater port in retail classic? Are their lowbie trinket quests retail classic? Just a few examples. Retail = boring AF. And at this point why would anyone give money to crooked, woke, greedy, piece of garbage Blizzard?
What ppl don't understand why there's more content on TWoW is actually Blizzard's abandoned ideas. They implemented "some" of the ideas into it. Like Emerald Dream, the forgotten dugeons which supposed to be on WoW launch. Hyjal zone, Karazhan. According to Jeff Kaplan aka Tigole (ex Blizzard dev) there was supposed to be 2 additional raids before TBC. Now you have them, thanks to TWoW. Have you ever wondered what will be if Blizzard actually included this content way back in the original vanilla? Well now you have it, and it's done very professional on top of it. There was ideas for Woodsman profession, but instead, TWoW did Survival and added it to the game and now you see how it works. You have plainsrunning which again was ignored/removed by Blizzard. All these little things that you had in mind, or thought about it, it's on TWoW now. However, not all content is from ex Blizzard ideas. Some of it is improvised, and done exceptionally well. Nothing is out of place, or seems akward to play. Amazing server minus the population because it's impossible to play well/farm with so many players around. I was one of the first HC runners on this server (leading the race even - my name was Epic if anyone remembers) for 2 days, way back when it had about 250 population only, and almost did it to 60, but then one of my sticks of ram died and power went down and when I came back 15 min later found myself dead. I'd recommend this server just about to everyone because it's that good. I had to chance to speak with Torta personally, and we had a nice discussion. I haven't been there since 1 year or so (don't want to get burn out), but the server is top notch, absolutely the best.
"Now you have them" Ok for starters, those are quite big claims, I mean sure, you have... something... the thing with canned, unfinished ideas, is that you could never be sure of what they were planing, or what the end result could have been. So if Jeff said for example, that the Emeral Dream was gonna be a challenging end game zone, he could have been talking about a raid, or just an actual zone like Silithus, but bigger, or maybe none of that because the map was so big it felt more like content for a full expansion, but they werent yet planning expansions and the map is filled under raids iirc. So what you have in Turtle is more like "things" developed from concepts and old ideas that never materialized. Some for good reazon. For example, im not sure how Twow implemented Plainsruning but the original concent required the tauren player to run for about 10 secs to ramp up then to full speed, and in that time, you could get hit, or just enter combat and have to start all over, not to mention what if they hit you when already runing, they never got to that point and it may have been that you'd get insta dismounted when entering combat, which is bad for pve, but needed for pvp, because if you could just keep runing fullspeed in combat in pvp, stealing the flag in warsong gulch for example, would be totaly broken for tauren players, not to mention if you could attack while plainsruning then tauren hunters would be too op too... then if you get dismounted by entering combat in pve, that would be so terrible for the tauren player just trying to travel to x place, and they were not gonna be allowed to have mounts under the excuse of tauren's size, and thus why they were planing on giving them plainsruning. So the idea got discared with good reazon. Twow took then plainsruning concept, developed its own, and did not care if it actualy makes sense, gameplay wise, to have it, because they are not a profesional game dev studie, they just people that just wanna do stuff, and while thats ok for them, is not for a company trying to sell a game that needs to be balanced. Sometimes, to cancel, discard, or just change plans on some ideas or concepts is good. Like for example, they were planing to have Hellfire Peninsula in the original game, just as an end game zone. If they had done that, all we would have gotten from outland would have been ONE zone with a little bit of content, But by instead changing their minds and developing Outland as a full concept and turning it into a whole expansion, we got a great expansion with LOTS more content then just a map. Lots of Dungeons, raids etc etc. Karazhan was gonna be a dungeon in Vanilla, instead we got it as a 10 man raid, Because they waited till TBC they were able to use the Eredar final boss. Eredar were not a thing yet in vanilla, and Prince Malchezar is one of my favorite bosses of all time, and theres just something great about that big powerful demon inhabiting the top of the tower in the intersection of another dimension!
@@josejuanandrade4439dude Blizzard actually added plainsrunning with Worgen wtf are you rambling about? TWoW plainsrunning works like regular mounts and like worgen running. About new content. Try before you judge. New dungeons on TWoW are mostly great. Crescent Grove (mid 30 furbolg-satyr dungeon in Ashenvale) and Hateforge Quarry (mid 50 dark iron dungeon) are freaking amazing both thematically and mechanically. Lots of added content like new quest hubs in old zones, 2 new leveling zones, new crafting recipes for low lvl gear Your "professional game devs" take is just laughable. Listen the podcasts and read the articles. Most of the dudes who developed Vanilla did it for the first time in their lives and where a bunch of Everquest nerds. They just had a passion and learned along the way
@@Khagrim Worgen's racial and Plainsruning is not at all the same, not even close. Worgen's racial is just a mount, 1.5 second cast like any other regular mount, not 10 secs wind up to start runing, and if the wrogen casts or attacks it inmediatly dismounts. Plainsrunning was planned to let taurent attack while on the move unless hit. The plainsruning they added in TWOW is NOT the real plainsruning, is just a copy of the worgen racial, so TWOW did NOT add Plainsruning since it has nothing to do with the real thing from beta.
@@josejuanandrade4439 no one in their right mind would add beta plainsrunning into the game cause it's imbalanced af especially when restricted to one race and one faction
It’s 50% and then u combo it with rested xp(which u can pretty much quickly get on demand cause the custom tent mechanic) this makes levelling so much faster on turtle. I will usually turn of PvP in 50+ since I tend to run around healing spec in healing gear…
Thats absolutely crazy. I had 205 honorable kills while leveling one of my characters to 60. never did a BG or anything. just quested wherever i felt like it. maybe you are playing at times when not many people are on. @@Redstripe921
I like the different modes like slow and steady mode. If you enable these from level 1 you earn rewards and once you get max you can earn the donation rewards without having to pay real money
This server has been a great time so far for me. The only thing I dislike is being able to play with the opposite faction. So seeing a shaman in my guild as an alliance is... just weird. Off. Uncomfortable. I grouped for SM:GY and had a troll and undead with a nelf, and 2 humans. Very odd. Other than that it's been great so far. New quests THAT FIT RIGHT IN. New questing hubs. New dungeons (Haven't done it yet) and some updated gear like the stockades actually droped decent gear which is really cool. Also the LFT group finder is perfect. It FINDS the group but you need to get there yourself so it keeps the world large and the adventure of clearing your way TO the dungeon.
Crossfaction is actually great cause you get more ppl to do content with. Maybe not relevant with the recent surge but when the server had 1k people online it was kinda needed.
Alexsensual on Turtle WoW? This feels like a fever dream. But it's cool to feel some vindication, I always felt like people hated hard on TWoW for reasons I didn't really fully understand, I guess longstanding Pserver politics that someone like me wouldn't understand. Or hatred of modified vanilla. Because I could instantly see the positives of the server, I think it's part of the culture to just shit talk other private servers, but he's already talked about that. A lot of the changes objectively fix a lot of issues with regular vanilla and make it more feasible for people to play, which I think is why so many people flock there. And because of those changes, there's a booming population, and you can always come back. I think the whole "server dead", faction imbalance, and server phasing create population issues inherently, and with TWoW, those issues are mitigated. Yes, it means the server is less hardcore, but ultimately, I think it's why it's so successful. It's just a place you can go, hang out, have fun, and it's always there, when you want to come back.
The funny thing is I quit playing about 3 weeks before Alex caved in, kek. An original draw when I started playing was the community. Right now, the population explosion is too full of ESLs to have that effect. Waiting for them to solve the Sino problem if you get what I mean before I get back into it.
Excellent review !!! Thank you for checking this out for us. We have to unite everybody and stop fighting each other. The enemy is Blizzard. I was completely against Vanilla + but I realized that we begged Blizz for old school style content for many years and they never delivered !! So these developers from among our ranks that are bringing us exactly that (vanilla plus) should be supported and encouraged. Our goal is to drop the curtain on Blizz, their ponzi schemes and unite to play and have joy again. I'm going to roll a toon here. FUCK BLIZZARD
every privat server with big pop need a cashshop to some degrees otherwise they cannot run a server which costs 1000 of dollars per month without any profit.
Ideally it's a great game. The only problem is u can't play. Better, if u love WAITING, that's your game. Hours for enter, disconnections on disconnections, impossibility to reconnect, hours of queue for some simple dungeon, infinite queue for battlegrouds (at least leveling, i couldn't reach 60... but I have tens and tents hours of waiting!), bugged quests, and questing is waiting the respawn of what u need because plenty of ppl killing same f mobs. If u have a couple of hours to play just forgot it and do something else: the first hour (maybe more) is gona just to enter... Already is a videogame, so a kind of "time thrown", but throw tons of hours to throw hours away is really too much if u save a little bit of sanity.
There is still gold selling, its just not advertised ingame. Its fair to say this, as you cant really win this war :) There are even bots, but the ask for gold isnt high enough to really notice :)
Eh... I think the recent population boom has made the turtle community go pretty far downhill... Feels like questing out in the open world people were friendlier than they are now.. Plus there are so many people that its basically unplayable with at least 10 people in every questing area all trying to compete for mobs and refusing to group, or unable to group because hardcore players are on the same server.
yep its unplayable and the love has died community wise due to all you said and overcensorship. I think ive had enough after 5 or more years there ...downloading cromie as i type:P
Can you re-enable Warmode after you disable it once? I heard you can't, would like for them to change that honestly. They could make it that it's just disabled in dungeons for example to stop abuse. Enjoying server though, really fun.
@@rhzyo Last time I played you could only change it once but I don't no if they updated it since then. Suppose I poorly wrote that, still need my coffee.
Dude I really wanna get into Turtle WoW but I just can't convince myself to put time into private servers. Been burned before in ones that got the lawsuits.. I feel like it's only a matter of time for all of them.
you shouldn't look at it that way. You are having fun, until you can no longer have fun if something happens, you get the enjoyment right away. Who knows what will happen, does not mean you should not enjoy it now. I was on the fence myself, same as you, but I am having loads of fun. The previous server I played at for 10 years has no players anymore, DEAD, so the server still being up means jack shit now anyway.
turtlewow for me is great and ages like a fine wine. everytime you play its more and more players and its the ONLY server that has levelers on a p6 server you wont find that on any other server. 10 days played full t2. only problems are small pvp community, and massive gear differences in bgs. not a fan of the cash shop stuff but better than running a server with 80~% bots. people try to defame by saying it has the same problems as everlook with massive china populations just plain wrong. there were 4-5k active players before the netease ban. sure that was a couple years ago but a quick look on /who and active raiding/leveling guilds paints a different story people like to portray. I am for certain this server has well over 5k english players well above any of its competitors. best of all its mostly drama free. been recommending it for years but everyone has strong opinions having never given it a solid try, as a non-classic+ fan it has my stamp of approval.
Alex ... I'm just getting in to this whole drama with crogge and shenna and so on ... what do you think is shenna involved here? do you think she is hiding behind a new name? I can't find anything about her these days ... but she must be somewhere ... and I bet she is still doing the same scams as before
"assholes are getting banned" Yeah, along with normal people. or did we soon forget the guild Basement getting banned with randoms who have no idea why?
Turtlewow is definitely the private server of NOW. Classic era has really devoured the pure vanilla kind of servers. Turtle is a completely different game that isn't offered by Blizzard.
i enjoyed the starter experience for high elf. but it is too populated. i was in one of the kobold mines and there were too many people there and i couldn't work on my quest. it was crazy
I don't like Alexensual, nothing personal, I disagree with his views quite a lot and I don't like the way he communicates to people. That being said, he is 100% here. Great review imo
As for the censorship and banning - some of the GM's tend to be a bit too strict. Getting warned or muted for saying "oh lord" or "Jesus" in world chat is a bit rough (no religion policy). Some people just get on a powertrip and become triggerhappy. Thankfully they've gotten a bit more lax recently.
@@Zeralop Yes, interestingly enough. I expected a bias, too. But sexual talk in general is forbidden - so people trying to promote LGBT agendas also get a slap on the wrist. That being said, from what I know the turtle team does have people of divergent sexuality, so hating on those will get you in trouble fast.
100% no GM banned anyone for randomly saying oh god or jesus in chat while ppl was chatting normally. Probably you got warned or muted because there was a lot of other non acceptable chatter going on at the same time and they saw you feeding into that.
@@Redstripe921 I got a warning saying "no religion" for saying "Jesus". Just telling you as it is. Maybe the GM had a bad day. Never claimed I was banned for that. For example tinyfin was known to be quite strict as a GM.
Personally I think the bags in the cash shop are a big issue, like what's the point of the regular bag drops anymore ? Why bother killing Onyxia ? Bag space progression was pretty important
When you say people are banned for being assholes, can you give me examples of who qualifies as an asshole? I would hope it's people who go out of their way to ruin the game for others... but I'm sure it includes other things as well. Turtle WoW sounds great, but I'd love to know their policies before committing. Who have you seen banned and what was the reason?
It is not publicly shown who gets banned for what. I have not noticed where it says that. It might be on discord, but I am not sure, haven't seen it. Haven't seen a single person act like an ass so far.
It's a shame you and the Felmyst clique were bashing on Turtle the past couple of months along with also attacking Stormforge, both are great servers and Felmyst is now done for, hope it opened up your perspective on things...
@@PsyTranceKaitia oh yeah, 2 guilds gonna fight for realm first vashj, amazing! This server was overhyped to have thousands of players and Gummy completely botched it right from the start, can't believe someone could fuck things up worse than blizzard but here we are. Will be a minor miracle if he doesn't shut it down in the next couple of months.
@@DarKNeSSCaLLeD22 Actually.. 4 guilds. Also, its the players fault. So many players with a feeble mind, who cant handle a rollback caused by a somewhat unique situation, and that aint exclusive to Felmyst. Lots of rollbacks happened on other servers, and the difference you might ask - Gummy was on top of it immediately, and the affected players got somewhat compensated: unheard support. No other server, to my knowledge, has done that. I cant wrap my mind around why people wanna play with China and cash shops. People who listens to reddit rumors and talk about a sudden "pull the rug" situation. Honestly, I am happy to not play with these people. So negative, all the time, about everything.
It would be great if you could take a peak at the private server Kalidar when you get a chance. I've only been playing for a month but it's very stable and has incredible scripting. The only thing you might not like is the addition of inviting bots for a party/raid. I really hope it grows in population soon.
My stance on the Shenna issue is that even if it is Shenna, Shenna hasn't done any of the things yet that made people turn against her on Elysium. People fuck up, people change, people learn to do better. Almost a decade's passed. Turtle's existed for half a decade and has had no real deal-breaking controversies with its staff or management beyond the rumours that Shenna's involved.
Turtle wow is currently infested with Chinese bots or well "players" and these "peak" numbers are only peaking during their ascension. I was playing a hardcore character and because of the instability of the server, the game crashed and my character was dead. This is ofc caused by the amazing "peak" players and not because of their trash server performance. I would avoid bothering with it, as the leveling experience (on alliance especially) is horrible right now. In oct, they will release a "eastern" server for our glorious allies.
They have a pretty extensive list of addons on their wiki. Since it's a modified 1.12 they don't have some modern addons like Questie but there are replacements. pfquest for example is even better than questie and has custom Turtle quests
No MacOS client is a nope from me, unfortunately. And not just because I mainly use a mac (I do have a windows computer as well) but here's the real issue: the vast majority of "normal" (non-basement dweller) people I know - use apple computers. It's a fact. Virtually every single white upper-middle class "normal" non-tech person uses a damn apple computer. So here's the deal: no mac client automatically makes the playerbase worse, more sweaty and tryhard, as strange as it sounds. Sadly, the classic era pve community feels more organic, as you get to play with other moms and dads who couldn't even figure out how to set up a realmlist if they tried. Believe it or not - but that's a good thing. I'd much rather play with other ordinary 30-40-50 year old folks with normal lives than edgy min-maxing 4channers. I tried TurtleWoW for a while and found the community rather toxic and couldn't find a proper "dad guild" :-/ But perhaps I'll give it another shot - because screw Blizzard.
