The Government has announced areas that were hit worse by flooding after Storm Henk will be able to apply for thousands of pounds in aid money to pay for recovery work and repairs.
Flooded households will be eligible for £500 in cash to help with immediate costs and more financial support will be available for those in certain areas.
As of 6pm on Saturday, 190 flood warnings and 210 flood alerts were in place in England and significant flooding was forecast in parts of the Midlands, Lincolnshire and on the River Thames.
Authorities have also warned people to be prepared for potentially dangerous cold temperatures and treacherous ice.
TalkTV's Julia Hartley-Brewer is joined by former government adviser on climate change Tom Burke to discuss the effect of Storm Henk.

The town I lived in was flooded in 2015. My house and business was 1mtr under water. We were told by the EA they needed £10m to provide flood defences. In 2019 I lobbied the government and managed to get £12.5m for the EA for our defences. As yet they still haven't started building, or finalised a design. Also if you look at ancient maps, from the middle ages you will see many of the areas now flooded we're actually large flood plains. So it's wrong to say it's due to climate change. It is due to man trying to change the geography.

So if the weather is becoming wetter due to climate change, which I seriously doubt is our fault, and it will become much harder to grow out own food in this country, why are the Government extolling the virtue of putting highly productive land (Prime in many instances) under acres of solar panels? Dare I even mention the similar land used for housing? Building on flood plains helps little, and water pushed downstream by the so called alleviation work only goes on to affect others further down the line.

We have a flood in the road outside our house. It has been like that for a week now. The sewers are all blocked and Anglian Water don't want to know. Why is this happening? Well, it's not man-made climate change - that's a myth. We have large ditches along the roads, but they have not been cleaned out since we've been here - how long? 50 years.

The authorities in my part of the world are quite happy to see the local rivers flood whenever there's heavy rain - regardless of the impact to residents, farmers etc. The river's are rarely if ever dredged so they silt up, they are rarely unblocked when plants clog the free flow and fallen trees and branches are simply left in place and effectively act as small dams. Their excuse is generally that they're protecting the environment for wildlife (ie a good excuse for doing nothing). Proper water/river management is good for both wildlife and the local residents. It used to be effectively perfomed but not any more, and not for some time.

Greenbelt being built on to the scale it has is the main problem, it acted as an enormous soak-away but not anymore as too much is concreted over. Blaming it on "climate change" is a red-herring and will only exacerbate the problem whether it`s more rain = flooding, less rain = drought.

Climate change is epochal. The meteorological data have only been collected since 1872, which is not an epoch. Over the past 10,000 years the average global temperature has been 2 to 2.5 degrees hotter - implying greater outliers it should be noted - and that predates any putative anthropomorphic effect. We are coming out of a very cold period.
@jjjjjjjjjz100
@jjjjjjjjjz100 8 месяцев назад
Yes climate change should be epochal; which is why it rings alarm bells that it is happening on an almost generational scale. Also the term is anthropogenic, and I assume you threw in the word ‘putative’ so as to seem full of intellect. It’s fairly basic atmospheric science that if you burn billions to trillions of tons of co2eq while squeezing carbon sink potential with deforestation, peatland conversion, and ocean acidification, it’s going to have an effect. Even if we are in the midst of a termination event, human emissions would accelerate that process massively, causing far greater misery when half the world becomes uninhabitable in the span of decades. It’s not that difficult to understand that climate change is likely a product of both natural cycles and human impacts - only one of which we can make a difference to.
@darrenb3830
@darrenb3830 8 месяцев назад
What is the source of your information? Because average global temps have never been 2-2.5 degrees hotter than today in the past 10k years. The last time average global temps were at this level was around 5 million years ago - before humans had even evolved. Also the past 5k years the Earth was experiencing a natural cooling phase, due to enter a new ice age in approx. 1.5k years. My sources are NASA, MET office, NOAA etc. You know, actual experts, not youtube channel presenters.

Clearing the roadside ditches has been neglected for years by most councils, causes much of the road flooding and the clearing out of the drains that have filled with leaves and road dirt! Allowing houses to be built on natural flood planes has been the reason these houses get flooded! Cheep wind & Solar are the two most inefficient forms of electricity generation! The best and cheapest form of electricity generation is Hydro (like the government did in the early 1950's in the Highlands of Scotland) that are still functioning today.70 years on & with many reliable years to come! They provide the baseload 24/7-- 365 days per year with minimal servicing costs! There are still many other sites on the west of Scotland that has the ideal amount of rainfall to give 2, 3, or 4 times the volume that has been produced for over the last half century! As for a grid connection that could be done with an underwater cable down the west coast both off shore wind turbines and these new Hydro units can connect into, with it coming ashore possibly in Ayrshire!

@@darrenb3830 There was a professor at a University in Australia named Tidd, he's area of expertise was the corals of the Great Barrier Reef. When he disagreed with the University about their findings he was fired. The ex NASA engineers I mentioned said they could not tell that they disagreed with NASA otherwise they would have been fired, seeing the pattern yet? A woman at James Cook University, not sure of her position, put out ten papers about climate change, they were peer reviewed and dismissed as "nowhere near good enough", basically lies. There was a wildfire in Australia in the 1800's, one of the worst in their history and they had very high temperatures in that summer. You will not find that year on any records as they said "they could not trust the data" so they started the records the next year, obviously they trusted the data then because it suits their theory. Greta was not the first to say "we only have ten years to save the Planet" they were doing this in the 1940's, all have been proved wrong, especially Greta as she has now deleted those posts. I could go on but am now getting a bit bored, there are many video's I have seen by professors and writers who disagree that it is all "man's" fault, they take into account the "Malkovich cycle" which will bring about the next ice age and other cycle's of the Earth's orbit around the Sun. It is not all down to man.
@darrenb3830
@darrenb3830 8 месяцев назад
@@johnlawrence7386 Of course you can just claim all the data is wrong and it's all a conspiracy and it just so happens this conspiracy conveniently involves the 'hiding' of the truth by not allowing certain things to be published (even though you can publish your own work freely). You are also conflating activist talking points (Greta, if she even did make that claim) with hard credible scientific data - they are not the same. What some activist or individual person said years ago, is not the same as published scientific research, with data freely available for anyone to verify. The Japanese space agency, the ESA, NASA, NOAA, MET office etc are all involved in some elaborate conspiracy for the past 100 years based on the words of a few individuals, despite the fact you can verify the basics of the theory with at home experiments. Despite the fact CO2 concentrations have doubled since the start of industrialisation and that it interacts with infrared radiation (verifiable facts). Despite the fact you talk of milankovitch cycles yet those cycles occur over thousands of years (shows how ignorant you are) and total solar irradiance declined since mid 20th century, even though global avg. temps increased (verifiable fact). Finally, would you not trust NASA about their understanding of the atmospheres of Mars? Jupiter? Pluto? No, because you would look like an idiot, But just so happens they are wrong about the Earth and have been involved in this conspiracy just so future governments could increase taxes.. it's completely laughable. If NASA told you there was a 1% chance of an asteriod hitting the earth in 20 years, you would expect our governments to do something about it not claim it as some giant conspiracy, because ultimately the fossil fuel industry and special interests don't stand to lose anything from it. But invest in future energy technologies that take money and power away from billion dollar corporations, now suddenly it's a conspiracy. Sure.

The more urban the country becomes the greater flood risks, especially when investment is limited. The weather changes all the time and nothing unusual. Civil engineers can deal with wet weather, it’s just a matter of investment.

Points of scientific concern against the promotion of the climate alarmist/net zero agenda; Arctic warming only occurs in the summer (not the winter months), presumably due to cloud cover, not CO2. Of the 40 or so climate models, the only one that gets anywhere close to the actual temperature data is the Russian model, which excludes CO2 influence. When back-tested, the climate models do not replicate the previous Roman or medieval warming periods, proving that the models must be wrong - so why should they be trusted to predict future temperature changes. Vostok ice core oxygen isotope data on half a million years of samples clearly show that atmospheric CO2 levels follow, and thus cannot lead/cause global temperature changes, possibly as warmer seas hold less of the gas. Unless these points are addressed scientifically, I will assume that it's a scam and remain strongly in favour of CO2 not being a significant cause of global warming.

Climate models are quite accurate. Hausfather - Climate models - Geophysical Research Letters. Even the fossil fuel company’s scientists knew what would happen. That’s why their projections were hidden. Supran - Assessing ExxonMobil’s Global Warming projections - Science. In a natural world Milankovitch Cycles cause warming which releases CO2 which reinforces warming until a new equilibrium is reached. That’s why warming precedes CO2. Humans have cut out the middleman of Milankovitch Cycles and warming the planet with anthropogenic CO2. All climate reconstructions of the last two thousand years show rapid warming in the Industrial Era. PAGES 2k Consortium - Consistent multidecadal variability - Nature journal. Your cut and paste nonsense is a joke.

We'll this climatologist has the right surname . That aside, from a profile perspective albeit a short observation. This man's attitude how it goes from being composed at the start of the conversation to that when challenged on he's theory on climate ! Subject becomes excited , moves around ,voice and body language changes to one off being restless in he's chair. Watch how any of these people perform when challenged on climate . They all become highly excitable little soles ! WHY? Is it the fact there propaganda cannot hold up to scrutiny ? There is a load of science ( proper accountable ) that explains things. First thing is check out any pro net zero's credentials, IE are they a member of C40 CITIES OR THE WEF ? If yes don't give them the time of day ,any more as you should a member of local or main government ! Fact 30 years ago we had storms and floods, still been building on flood plains. The town of Ware in Hertfordshire was destroyed numerous occasions by the river Lee , none of this in modern times ! Earths climate changes all the time, only net zero will control human beings in such a way that Orwell didn't think of !

Every time we have a weather event out come the global warming rhetoric. If you build on a flood plain expect your house to flood. What I cannot fathom is how do these developments get approved in the first place? and the fact they now exist only compounds the problem with water run off produced from concreting over areas of land that once absorbed rainfall and held it back. Suppose the answer is pure greed?

We are expected to believe that we must get ready for climate change but they never say what that would look like. They want us to humour them by believing them but they never want to humour us by maintaining what is already used. On the whole the infrastructure of Britain is abysmal, we are still reliant in some ways on Victorian invention and construction. Regulation changes for ditches, rivers, canals and wetlands have changed where to do nothing is by law in some cases. History is lost on these people, we always modified infrastructure lives and shelter to cope because that was part of our lives, now we are told to change the world for future generations we need to look further, admire those that want to live on mars. Stop dreaming start mending have a better life.

Build on flood plains instead of using them for agricultural, an activity that took place for centuries as the annual river floods provided the nutrients for healthy crop produce , you will get flooding . The more open land available to absorb rainfall , that disappears under construction of roads and housin , the more flooding will occur . The pressure to provide more housing for visitors is seeing more agricultural land being built on .

Let’s look at it this way. They used to dredge the rivers regularly, they don’t now. Houses are being built on flood plains and too near rivers. That combination alone doesn’t help things does it. Flooding has been happening for a very long time but it has nothing to do with the climate, that is to do with the trade winds and the weather that brings. The climate constantly changes and always has done so that’s nothing new and has nothing to do with fossil fuels burning.
