So much food with so little labour!

Our 2023 winter squash harvest is now in the books. We grew 4 varieties, and planted 8 plants of each variety 4 separate beds. Here is a list of the varieties we chose and their respective yields from each 50 square foot bed.
Red Kuri Squash 99.6lbs
Prism Butternut Squash 92.2 lbs
Jester Delicata Squash 51.9 lbs
Sweet Mama Squash 92.8 lbs
There are a few crops that could still give us a higher yield per square foot, but none that could be grown with so little effort AND such a high return. When you also consider how easy it is to store winter squash for several months even without refrigeration, it becomes obvious why it is a top recommendation for any gardeners wanting to minimize their labour in the garden, keep food storage simple, and maximize their yield at the same time.
If you have winter squash varieties to recommend to your fellow gardeners, or better yet, yield per square foot data to share with us all, please leave a comment.
If your vegetable growing doesn't seem this effective yet, head over to my Free Workshop to discover the 3 breakthroughs that have made our gardens so productive and efficient today. www.vegetableacademy.com/yt-fr...

Winter squash is one of my fav crops. Sadly, this year I spent all my time battling squash bugs and squash Vine borers 😢 & still almost no harvest

same! i love love love a huge rambling squash field but for me its not low effort at all! for me first its the cucumber beetles, then the vine borers, and if anything survived then its infested with millions of squash bugs! i cant check every single leaf 50 times a day and i only use neem solution for pest management. i get at least one or two mature fruits off each plant but usually the vines die too fast! dont even get me started on squirrels and rabbits lol

@@emmettbattle5728 I had squash borers and had 3 squash disappear that were growing on a fence. The last 3 I covered almost every evening with a tarp fastened top and bottom to the fence. I blamed it on a member of Bambi's family. Then all my Brussels sprouts were picked over night. And I decided the only thing could have done that was a ground hog.. after that happening twice I dug them up and they are now in pots 4 feet off the ground. I did harvest 3 nice squash.

Try and get some resistant plants to vine borers! Cucuzzi has much thinner vines and they can’t/ don’t like to bore in it as much. My squash was demolished by vine borers, but they didn’t touch my Cucuzzi. Just experiment with different ones!

You got to grow vine borer resistant varieties only. This year I grew Honey Nut squash and Rampicante. It was my first year growing resistant varieties, and it was completely easy. No issues whatsoever, the borers didn’t touch them. My area also deals with cucumber, beetles and squash bugs, but the issue is the vine borers. Without damage from the vine borers, the plants are healthy enough to not really be affected by other pests. I grew non-resistant squash plants for four years before I found out about resistant varieties. I have been out there in July trying to save plants that were dying. Definitely not worth it. I will only grow resistant varieties now.

Are Sweet Mama’s the same as Kabocha (or at least closely related)?
@owendavies8227
@owendavies8227 5 месяцев назад
They are the same species (therefore at least distantly related). There are four or so commonly grown species of squash: Curcurbita pepo, C. maxima, C moschata and C. argyosperma. Of those, both of the ones you mentioned are C. maxima. Maxima squash have some of the most variation out of all garden plants so I would expect that they aren't particularly closely related.

I did butternut and red kuri this year, too. Plus acorn and a light cream variety a friend gave me. I love how they last forever! If they do start to go soft, I can give them to my chickens.

Do squash bugs not exist in your world? These plants would have been utterly demolished by July where I garden.

Said this to someone else, but try a bunch of different varieties. A lot of my squash was demolished by vine borers, but my Cucuzzi plant didn’t get touch as its vine is so thick and thin.

Over 300 lbs of food! That's fantastic, Except for a tiny caveat; You really, REALLY gotta love squash..! I dunno that I've got the constitution for the full 330. Leverage your cache for beans, lentils, and a 🐷. 😊 I do love the no-tend aspect of your crop.

I'm so jealous of people who can plant and forget. In my garden I would plant, and slugs would murder them all overnight instantly. It's insane how many of them there are in our space. We have habitat for hedgehogs and frogs, but they dont even make a dent.

Youve got to try honeynutt its been crossed from butter cup amd butternut. They are stable now so if you only grew them you can save seed(or be a dork like me and tape the blooms shut. Hand pollinate and tape shut again. Put a red ribbon on it if it makes a fruit and i get lots of them per plant. They are smaller than butternut and buttercup. But they are the sweetest deepest orange and creamy squash. I can always cook 2 for big family meals or one for sides when its just me and hubby. Or one just for my lunch if its just me. I even use it for pumpkin pie and my family prefer it to pumpkin from the can pies. I also love kobucha (kubocha? Sp) and sweet delicata. I grew Seminole pumpkin but havent cooked one yet. (Been sick ) but they were beautful.

The nice thing about Winter Squash is that if properly stored, they will last for many many months. They would to be processed a bit to store by freezing.

Yeaaa... The mokeys ... I seen them DEMOLISH beautiful/bountiful gardens. The langurs & the small brown monkeys w/the red behinds ... farmers near Hardwar got government permission (about 15 years ago) & put out poisoned bananas THOUSANDS & got rid of aaalot of monkeys to save the crops of vegetables. It was an emergency situation -

1. How do you keep squirrels and crows from putting little bike marks or even eating the squash? 2. Do you save seeds from your squash or do you plant fresh every year?
@gcc2313
@gcc2313 8 месяцев назад
If you save seed you need to do controlled pollination. Which he didn't do as he simply "forgot about it". And for F1 hybrids it's not possible. It may be simpler to just buy seeds in bulk they're quite cheap and last a few years.
