I'm glad you added the word "rock" in there, because I would've had to correct you and remind you there was a female singer named Karen Carpenter. IMO, the best female singer ever, maybe even the best singer, _PERIOD._
By the way, this was 1977 ! And ❤️ the Wilson sisters are still going strong. I'm 65 YEARS OLD and have seen HEART live many times over the years. FANTASTIC!
Nice reaction. I was a senior in high school when this album was released. I was into Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Yes, Hendrix, etc etc etc and the rocking Wilson sisters were very popular among all of my rock and roll loving friends of that era. Both Ann and Nancy have fantastic voices, but I don't think any other female vocalist in rock and roll can equal Ann Wilson. A legend in her own time, no doubt. Their music still sounds fresh all of these years later, it's amazing.
Oh and we love her too. 😊 Ann is soon to be 74y this month. And still touring with sis Nancy. We all loved Heart back in the day, we were all teens, young adults and very few female led groups, and that killer voice, the harmonieswith Nancy, LOVE ❤. This is a studio over dub video, but there's plenty of Heart to choose from. ❤❤
Crazy on You next. Aside for Ann’s stellar vocals, sister Nancy has a great finger style acoustic guitar intro. Think you’ll really enjoy it a lot. ❤ 🔥
Ann Wilson and her sister Nancy Wilson (on guitar). If you like this one you should also listen to "Alone". Ann really showcases her voice in that song. "Crazy on You", "If Looks Could Kill" and 'Magic Man" are other great ones. They also do a tribute to Led Zeppelin (one of their influences) with "Stairway to Heaven". By the way, Joan Jet is another awesome female rocker.
Heart has reinvented themselves a couple of different times, but this is their iconic best from the 1970's. Ann Wilson is one of the greatest rock music singers, male or female. And Nany Wilson is one of the greatest rock guitar players, male or female. The only problem is that they tended to overshadow the rest of the band, who were fantastic in their own right. Getting into the 80's they went more of a hairband style, but were still great.
As far as I know, the real audio of this performance (which I gather is not in front of a crowd) is on a RU-vid video titled "Heart - "Barracuda" (1977)", on a Channel called Tripwire.
Plenty of female rock vocal talent out there. The Bangles, The Indigo Girls, The Sundays, The Cranberries. Add in country and RNB and you have a plethora of talent to choose from. If you want a comparison to Barracuda by Heart, listen to Lita Ford ("Close My Eyes Forever"), or Joan Jett ("I Love Rock and Roll"), Pat Benatar ("Hell is for Children"), Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane / Jefferson Starship / Starship fame ("White Rabbit"), Evanescence featuring Amy Lee - ("Bring Me to Life"), Pink - ("Fuckin' Perfect"), etc.
HEY THERE! HEART RECOMMENDATIONS… “Crazy On You” performed live in 1978 (This is a rare piece of footage, I think. THE CHANNEL IT IS ON: Don Jack) Absolutely UNBELIEVABLE, it’s my all-time FAV HEART performance! Heart’s performance of: Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” in 2012 At the Kennedy Center (NOTE: There are TWO versions of this; you want the LONGER one - 7:59 minutes - the heading says “Full Version” - because the shorter one has CUT OUT bits of the performance. THE CHANNEL THIS IS ON: Don Jack) “These Dreams” A live performance at the Paramount Theater in SEATTLE in 2002. (This rendition sounds even BETTER than the original studio recording!) IT CAN BE FOUND ON: Heart’s official channel (It’s a VEVO video)
Just a note: I watched a How to do Music reactions video by a guy and he says that he prefers to play the music through the desktop audio in order to get a good full crisp sound, and he listens through headphones only. He said if you use a microphone in front of speakers its gets and echo and distortion etc. So, you might try looking into how to setup to play the songs through the desktop audio instead of using a microphone in front of a speaker.
On your bee gees, there is a video of Robin doing OH DARLING,off the sgt peppers lonly hearts club band ,the movie with the Bee gees Peter Frampton, many others ,you should watch it,late 70' early 80'a must see!!!!
Fun reaction.good luck with the channel. Here is a suggestion: If you are not familiar with the KIng, I would recommend the videos below in the following order. I'm not going to say anymore in case you have not seen them before and ready to be a surprised. 1 - Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds (Live in Las Vegas) 2 - Elvis Presley - "Love Me Tender" (Live 1970)
An Wilson is amazing, but her sister Nancy on guitar is equally talented. Please react to Alone/These Dreams (live in Seattle), the latter with Nancy on lead. You won't regret it!
Maybe you could increase the bit rate of the video, and make sure playback is in stereo. The music is waving in and out, like it's on a wah pedal. We love this classic. Great song. Ann and Nancy Wilson are an amazing team. The performance was live, the audio is studio.
This is from 1977... there were very few 'Music Video' type releases, with visuals that were not just the band playing -- they were rather expensive seeing as they needed to do it on film (video tech was in its infancy, really). So this is not Live... it is the studio audio track and a Live show mashed together to look as synched as possible. They did a convincing job, I think. ;-] There are very good Live videos out there of Heart, if that's what you like, but no, this one isn't really Live.
As far as I know, the real audio of this performance (which I gather is not in front of a crowd) is on a RU-vid video titled "Heart - "Barracuda" (1977)", on a Channel called Tripwire. The live playing is slightly faster, which I'd say is why there are a few jumpy bits on this video, but, as you suggest, they did a pretty good job
Tough to find a more powerful female voice in rock music. Pat Benatar is also in the conversation I think. But certainly Ann Wilson is a powerful voice.
Heart rocked because they ROCKED! they werent worried about "girl power" they did it because they were full on rock. They werent worried about patting themselves on the back, they just rocked, hard and its why they are awesome. If more women would stop worrying about "girl power" and just go all out we would see a lot more women standing tall and rockin out.
Love your reaction ❤👍The Wilson sisters are legendary. Watch them honor Led Zeppelin at the Kennedy center and do the cover for Stairway to heaven ( WOW)
This was their studio version synced up with live footage. You can find the actual live performance on YT. You are absolutely going to want to explore this band. I just liked and subscribed for what I hope to be your journey exploring more Heart. Try their "Crazy on You" live 1978 version. You will see an extended acoustic guitar intro by Nancy leading into the song. WELL WORTH WATCHING! Ann (vocals) & Nancy (acoustic guitar) Wilson are sisters. Heart was a progressive rock band in the 70's. For me (and for Ann & Nancy BTW), their first 5 albums were their strongest work. Both ladies are incredibly talented. In the 80's they signed a contract that took away some of their creative control. They were re-imaged by their "corporate masters" as a pop rock band in the 80's. They still had some good 80's songs, but their albums were not chalked full of hidden gems like their earlier works. They were even dressed in the "popular corporate wardrobe" of the day - which they also didn't really enjoy.
I went to a lot of Heart concerts! Ann Wilson can send shivers down my spine with her voice. But let me suggest a much younger band of 3 sisters known as *The Warning.* They have too many accolades to list, so just try their song 'Evolve' from the 2023 MTV VMAs to start.
So, Ann Wilson is front vocal and her sister Nancy is on guitar. Nancy plays a variety of strings (including the mandolin) and if you want to she her absolutely shred on the acoustic, find the live vid of "Crazy on You", but make sure you get the version with the long acoustic intro (it's actually two songs, the acoustic solo is titled separately but it leads into Crazy on You). Nancy absolutely shreds on the guitar and then Ann comes in after with the power vocals....
“So much girl power”. Truly, one of the most ridiculous things that has ever come out of a Gen Z mouth. The Wilson sisters weren’t about “girl power”. They were about the music, nothing more. They weren’t looking for accolades because they’re female.
Hey, she's reacting honestly, and she's a product of her times. And to be fair, while Ann and Nancy weren't particularly focused on "girl power", this very song is a clap-back against the misogyny of the record label guy who tried to push a rumor that Ann and Nancy were actually lesbian lovers in order to sell more records - that's who the "barracuda" in the song represents. "If the real thing don't do the trick, you better make up something quick" is definitely calling the guy out for the douche he was. And whether the Wilson sisters themselves were just all about the rock or not, Heart was in fact one of the bands that led the way for women in rock to be able to shine, for women to do more than just sing; Nancy's awesome guitar skills inspired lots of women to dream of being in a band, and to actually pursue that dream. They weren't the only ones, but they were definitely a positive force in that regard. You don't have to actively promote "girl power" to be an icon that does inspire more women to get into the business. So the comment is legit - they WERE an inspiration, just by being who they were.
When I think of great female rock vocalist, I think 1960's - Janis Joplin and Grace Slick. 1970's - Ann Wilson and Pat Benatar. And in terms of just a bada$$ female rocker - Joan Jett.
The 70s had a lot of female rock leads. Pat Benatar, Grace Slick, Joan Jett, Suzie Quatro, Lita Ford, Cherie Currie, Patti Smith, Stevie Nicks, Deborah Harry and many more that I'm too old to remember. None of them were as good as Anne and Nancy Wilson though.
Many of the videos from the 70’s were live performances. Technology was in its infancy. Ann and Nancy Wilson (sisters) are rock goddesses. Check out their cover of Stairway to Heaven at Kennedy Center Honors from 2012. Ann was 62 and Nancy 60ish. It’s epic.
Girl Power? Barracuda is definitely a great classic. Lead vocalist Ann Wilson wrote the lyrics and lead guitarist Roger Fisher, drummer Michael Derosier and guitarist Nancy wrote the music.
One of my favorite bands. Great video, the other woman playing guitar was singer Ann Wilson's sister Nancy Wilson. Now you should watch the live video for their song 'Crazy On You', Ann Wilson really sings her butt off in this song, and her sister Nancy Wilson rocks on the guitar in the song intro. Must watch Heart video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qVcl0Iw3fs8.htmlsi=XuqQ9bRdNYkFsddY
Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson are Heart. I do enjoy seeing young people as yourself time to explore 60's 70's 80's and some 90's great music and even greater groups the best music came from that era, keep up the good work explore more.
The background of this song is a bit creepy tho. A radio producer approached Ann (lead singer) After a concert and started insinuating that Nancy (guitarist and Ann's sister) were "lovers". Disgusting. Ann was so angry that she went back to the hotel and immediately wrote this song.
There is a version of this song, with the story behind it live From The Howard Stern Show. I would highly recommend checking it out. Ann is 74 now and can still sing her butt off, and you get the dirty gritty story behind the song as well.
Great job. I like the variety of music styles you're reacting to. I'm not sure but you might want to research if getting a better microphone might get a better sound for the music. Or maybe get some feedback from other reactors on how their setup is? Also, there may be a way to feed the sound through direct line instead of using an open mic if that's what you are doing, but I really don't know. Anyway there must be a way to eliminate that distortion and fading in and out of the sound...Good luck!
