Rock Hunting Boat Trip with Theo and Alex!

Yes, it was a rough start for Theo, and an expensive one, as his SLR camera is no longer working. I think the only way he'll get the kayak back is if someone on RU-vid finds it, as there was no identification anywhere. :( But it was still a great trip.

I’ll be in gardiner for 2 weeks,Billings is a 2 hrdrive so maybe too far, does the Yellowstone River have agates and petrified wood closer to me ? Thank you for any info

Hello! How exciting! The Yellowstone should have agates AND petwood all the way to the eastern boundary of the Yellowstone volcano line - about Livingston? But I have never hunted there, so I can't tell you for sure. HOWEVER, I CAN tell you that a two-hour drive is nothing in Montana terms. :''D

Yesterday I found an agate with some beautiful fortifications! It's small (about an inch) but the fortifications on it are unreal 😮

Do you have any recommendations on some good books, sites, or shops for new people to get started to learn about identification and get looking in the right areas? I'm also in the Billings area and have always been curious while out on walks/ hikes.

Hello! There are a couple books I always recommend - Roadside Geology of Montana and Rockhounding Montana. They're a great overview of the state's geologic treasures. As far as shops, I really recommend that you stop by Sticks and Stones at 2109 Grand Ave. It's owned by Theo Kellison, who is a SUPER nice guy, and really excited about helping folks. Will need to figure out a way to get to a good river for rocks. We are so dry(6-8” precipitation) a year. Dry wash are what we have here to collect in.

Even the deserts often have fierce spring runoffs... you might be able to find something.

I will need to invest in some better muck boots before spring. Then check reports of how snow in areas and then when it is melting. I can deal with the mud and water. Grew up 30 miles SW of Portland Oregon (before it got weird). 35-45” of rainfall a year.

Powell’s books is about the only thing I miss from the west sides of the Cascades. Oh, and Mongolian Grill.
