/sorry for wall of text i got very interested thinking abt this Hmm...I don't think it's as simple as that. Drugs back in the day were much more likely to be pure for the price whereas nowadays for cheap everything is cut with all types of shit making it much more dodgy. I mean obviously it's not like the drugs were good for you in the first place but when you're ingesting a mystery potion it makes it much harder to treat if things go south. In my area we were told on numerous occasions as kids the dangers of street drugs, with emphasis on the youth mortality rate. Pretty safe to say people want to get fucked up without dying. Previous generations weren't given the same warnings since there wasn't the same data/attitude. When drugs are first introduced their long term effects aren't well known. We also got similar talks about alcohol consumption and combining liquor with things like caffeine and the effects it has. Actually helpful unlike the fearmongering and just say no stuff because it was all practical and fact based with much more emphasis on how to stay safe if you are 'partaking' in these things. All that stuff aside maybe it just depends on the area but round here coke is still a big problem. I know mulitple friends of family who use regularly. Not to mention other stuff like street valium which which folk often use alongside heroin. Also hash (which is illegal still) is smoked by half the people I know lol Actually, I decided to read up about this because it got me curious and Dundee specifically has had an increase of drug misuse deaths from 5.9 (2000-2004) to 45.2 (2017-2021) per 100,000 people. Christ! I also learnt that Scotland has the highest drug misuse deaths out of any European country 😬 I doubt we're the absolute worst, we're probably just more rigourous with surveying but it's still pretty bad.
