This video brings back some old memories. About 40 years ago, I was a teenager living with my grandfather, and later father, on a hobby farm. The family had an old MF 135 tractor which was very similar to yours, and we had a very similar sickle bar mower. I can remember "helping" while my father bradded in new teeth on the mower. Occasionally we borrowed my great uncle's haybine, which was much better because it crimped the hay for faster drying. By the time I was old enough to be trusted to operate the equipment (~16 yo), we had upgraded to a rotary mower, which cut grass much faster, and was a lot easier to maintain since it had far fewer teeth and didn't hit every last rock in the field.

I know a few people in my area that use oats as cattle feed instead of harvesting the grain. Generally you don't let the seeds fully develop before cutting and baling it (some people do it as the grain milks, we do it just before it does). This prevents losing part of your harvest falling on the ground. Although if you're planning to use the seeds for next year, what you did is a valid way of doing it!

Run a chain drag over that ground to smooth and work those seeds in. Next year you will have more grass in with the millet but it will still make decent feed if your animals like it.

Definitely reseeded. Lol. BTW sunflowers & pumpkins can be companion planted very well.

I threw some millet into a bare piece of ground to provide a cover crop. The horses walked thru it all summer and never touched it. Immediately after the first frost the horses tied into it and that patch didn’t last a week. I totally underestimated the food value.

Millet is a favorite of exotic birds, all types of Parrots, Cockatoos, and other types of Parrots. It's the base grain for their seed mix that used to be the main food for them but, today they have found that eating too much seeds causes fatty liver disease because they can't get enough exercise in captivity to burn off the fat from seeds. So, now it's best to feed them a bird chop that is a mixture of cooked and raw veggies, different grains and legumes with fruit on the side a couple times a week. Boiled eggs can be added to the chop also or just fed it to them separately. All of that aside though the spray millet is the favorite treat for most birds. It's what many people use to train them with. There are some birds that prefer something else as their favorite but, spray millet almost always helps in training. And, oddly enough, they prefer it still on the spray instead of the loose seeds. It's like crack to most birds for some reason.

Millet often grown as a cheap filler in bagged bird seed. Maybe good for chickens! It’s not old school, they make better newer ones. As haybines it’s a matter of preference, pastures you are cutting etc. lots of rocks these are great, rotary is nice if you don’t have rocks and a level field.

Chickens love millet and it's very healthy for them so maybe yours would be great for your chickens.

With that Cycle Bar Mower you take me back 67 years to the first time I drove a Tractor and the first time I drove anything with a Motor. The tractor was a 1910 Farmall and I learned to drive it that day as I cut 1000 x 500 yards of weeds at a local Rifle and Pistol Club Range.. I often wonder watching Videos by many Millennial Farmers why they do not adapt it instead of a drag behind mower which has no real versatility like a side drop... I remember easily getting around fence posts ditches etc. etc.... Thanks for sharing..

I remember planting foxtail red and black millet from the seed I bought from petstore, they have grown but to my surprised not anywhere as big as their parent

oohhh, not good at all storing the tractor by all the hay, as when you start it up carbon sparks come out the exhaust, and it will set it all alight,..and you dont want that..

We harvest millet with a swather and then pick it up with a pickup header on a combine

yes sickle mowers can be dangerous for pets and animals we had a momma cat the my dad hit with the mower she lost one whole foot and a couple of toes off another but we patched her up and she was still the best mouser i have ever seen 2 under her claws 1 in her mouth and wanting to go after the one s that got away!!!! something you might think about planting in the millet field is Mung beans they are a short term crop and will provide lots of protein they are also very drought tolerant. baling the millet will be a balancing act to get dry enough to keep but not to shatter out the millet seed . good luck is raining her in ok still trying to plant wheat

I used to use & preferred a sickle bar. Mine was simpler than yours.

Is that Proso millet? I would like to see the results of feeding it, I have been thinking of doing the same, but in round bales. You probably lose less with the sickle mower than I would with the haybine.

Have you looked into a quick hitch? I have one for my small tractor and it works great.

Do you think the deer would eat it after the cut? I’m not a farmer by any means, but just curious. Also, because I enjoy hunting, would there be an alternative crop you could plant to not only hunt over, but harvest for feed? Say like Radish? I wonder what the cost to grow a 1/4 acre of feed for your livestock, Versus “hunting plot” for Venison (meat in the freezer) would equate to. Just a thought.

You could just build a temporary pin and put some goats out there. Rotate all of your goats for one day until they eat it instead of raking and bailing.
