I had a new neighbor, 1 of 2 neighbors within gunshot range, from Wichita a few years ago, move in across the lane on the end of our wooded point. I own several acres, in part on a 400'x600' hilltop point. No zoning restrictions in Barry County Missouri. I have a few livestock, a few dogs I keep in the house, 1 outside. He proceeded to tell me I could not tie a horse or goat billy goat out to help control the grass and brush, called the police. They laughed at him. Told me would shoot my dog if ever crossed his property, then tried to run one over in my lane, I called the cops and he got a summons. He also told me no loud music, which don't ever do this? A cpl of my sons had friends over for a bonfire, were wrestling on the lawn, being rowdy. Neighbor called police again, telling them was a large fight taking place. They came out, found out the true story, told him to stop calling them and wasting their time. I do enjoy my backyard target range, facing the next hillside 300' across the ravine for a terminal point. Have a private balcony overlooking it, that I use for a shooting platform, can also hunt deer from it. He doesn't like rifle fire either apparently. He should have stayed in the city.

I grew up here, LOVE it here. Love that most local municipalities won't tolerate over developing and leave the ridges for the locals. So yeah, I'm one of those sayin', SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! I don't want to have to go hide in my cave from a buncha newbies. But if you do come here, assimilate! We don't need 5gee towers and trying to change our counties. No one in my area is racist and we have people of many colors and religions. We all get along.

Preaching to the choir here, I grew up and was homeschooled in a house up on a mountain in Garland County, Arkansas, it is the same way there, my folks moved to Atlanta, Georgia when I was 13 and I got out of there as soon as I could. I live up in the hills of northwest Georgia now because it has the same type of landscape, people, culture, and politics as where I grew up with an Appalachian mountain twist. Don’t tell my wife, but deep down I still miss home and wouldn’t mind moving back out to the mountains of Arkansas. Those are my people. You just made me homesick, Travis 💯👍

I live in The Ozarks and they are only good for nice people who mind thier own business. Beautiful, good climate and 90% of the people here are good God fearing, kind, hardworking people. And there is usually work here. Cheap taxes and if your a cigarette sinner like me you can get packs of cigarettes for 3.50 Whaaaat ! ! ! Gas 1.85. Food average but plenty of neighbors who sell eggs etc....cheap of course. Very few forrest fires historically compared to other areas. Almost always 🌧 during the summer. We just got 4 days of rain while the rest of the country is under sever drought. Lots of wildlife if your into hunting and or fishing. Real borders made up of very big rivers. And food grows well here if you can help the soil out as its pretty rocky. But with the consistent rain and warm sunshine food again produces well. Long growing season also.

People come and people go. I was born, raised, and lived my whole life in the Ozarks, so it's home to me. It isn't the easiset place to live. You have to work hard to keep the woods from reclaiming your property after you carve out a piece. I suppose you could put poison all over to kill everything, but then you couldn't grow food or drink the water. If people come and start voting liberal policies, well then you will create the very same things you came here to get away from. High taxes, more laws and ordinances and zoning codes that restrict your freedom to do what you want with your land. Nosey government that thinks they know better than you on issues like how to raise, educate, feed, take care of your children. Nosey law enforcement that won't tolerate noise, guns, freedom of expression, freedom in general. A word about racists. Well, the Ozarks is more than 95% White, 98% in my county. If I as a White man was to move to an area of the country that was 98% non-white, how do you wager I'd be treated? Would I fit in? Well, I don't think I need to address that subject anymore. Peace.

I’m a Ozark hillbilly with a Jamaican wife, and everyone she has ever met treated her with the usual Christian kindness that runs deep in many as you know being a resident. Granted there are a few who some might call “racist”, but really they just don’t know many blacks. Not even those people have ever treated her wrong in anyway. We are kind to people who act like decent human beings, but I wouldn’t bring that big city bullshit down here. You are right about us liking our way of life, and I wouldn’t give it up for anything. I’m from the Ozarks and have a Jamaican counterpart. Saying this no one has ever treated her wrong in anyway. For the most part many have never really been around a lot blacks, but are not racist. There are obviously your bad apples, but that goes with every other place on the planet. Most of us are Bible believing Christian’s who treat everyone with respect; unless you cross certain lines in the sand. I have had the privilege of living in most of the states out west including all the major cities, and I never found a better place to live than the Ozarks. I moved home to raise a family, and give my children the same blessing of growing up here! I bought land in the Ozarks back in 2009 and intend to move there when I’m ready. I visit the land from time to time and I’ve always had good experiences with folks in the area. Friendly neighbors, friendly businesses, and even the random encounters have ended with pleasant and friendly conversation. Maybe the worst thing that’s happened so far was that after striking up a conversation with a guy at a campground, I was offered a free puppy. (A couple of days earlier he had found a litter of puppies that had been abandoned near the campground... he said planned on dropping them off at an animal shelter on his way home, but that if I was looking to get a dog, I could have one of those)

Everyone we've met treated us like they were glad we moved here. Only complaints are that a place could be so humid and at the same time a dust bowl 😆. I'm returning back to the US to early retire within the next 6-12 months (If i can get out of here). i can basically choose anyplace i want to live in the US (or other countries) but for some reason i was pointed in the direction of the Ozarks after romanticizing about other parts of the country that may have made for more picturesque postcards or have warmer weather (I still like 4 seasons). i had no idea of the place at all but it didn't take me long to decide this was the place, even without visiting it in person. I did spend a few summer vacations in the area, bought a few different lots of land (because i knew that eventually the stuff we are seeing play out now in our cities was eventually going to happen). I'm very much looking forward to settling down in the area. I know that culturally, politically and philosophically i will fit in.

I'll be honest, I know pockets of people in deep southern Arkansas and Louisiana where they frown on outsiders (of any color) visiting without knowing someone much less moving to the area but the Ozark area isn't one of these places. It is areas that area 100% whites so if that makes you fell uncomfortable or like an outcast by default that something worth considering. Another thing that applies to new residents as well locals in some small towns in the Ozarks it can be a 2 tier justice system (depending on who you know or your standing in the community), from my experience this mainly comes in to play regarding domestic and civil disputes not to the extent cops will shake you down on traffic stops. Other than that crime due to drug addiction and poverty is a problem in some areas. That's not a perfect utopia but it's no other place I'd rather live. Sorry, if that's a bit to the point it's just my observation as a native of North Central Arkansas .

I grew up in the Ozarks (an hour-ish west of Branson) but moved to St. Louis for college. I met my husband there. We still live in St. Louis but I return home every possible chance I get. His parents recently moved not too far from my hometown. My father-in-law retired and always wanted to live in a quiet place when he retired. As soon as I found out where they were moving to, I asked, "Are you sure YOU want to do that?" Long story short, their neighbors HATE them and they hate being there, not that they'll admit it. I've tried giving them tips on how to be hillbillies but of course, I'm never right. Just like how I said they'll hate being in the middle of nowhere. My mother-in-law said it was my fault they picked that area in the first place since I rave about the Ozarks all the time. Yeah, which is why you shoulda listened to me when I said it probably wasn't a good idea. Thankfully I've formed a bit of an alliance with the neighbor's wife and she texts me when my in-laws are acting up. I'll tell my husband and he'll call his dad to "check in." During the conversation, he sneakily brings up the complaint and gives his dad advice on the matter all in the name of "conversation." So far he hasn't caught on. A lot of issues have been solved that way but them living there is still a nightmare for both parties. That being said, I don't see a problem with people moving to The Ozarks ONLY if they're willing to assimilate.

I live in NE Arkansas now, but I'm from the North Central Arkansas Ozarks, and yeah it's an interesting, unique place given its past and current influences. There's still some old school white supremacy lurking, like in Zinc, but you know what? White supremacy is a deeply embedded AMERICAN and GLOBAL problem, so don't think the Ozarks are uniquely racist or backward. Lots of places are for lots of reasons. While there are places like Zinc, there are also places like Eureka Springs - A pretty left-leaning Swiss village in the South US. It's also all growing because of people bringing influences to the region, so don't be afraid to visit or consider sowing roots in the Ozarks. Given its incredible scenery, complimented by a desire for harmony with nature and its generally welcoming people you should be good as long as you aren't trying to make everyone help you clone where they used to live. Social, political and economic changes are necessary, sure, but just like everywhere else, you have to meet people where they're at, and understand what they really care about. Some of those things are cool, and some not, just like anywhere else. Just like anywhere else the flavor of the Ozarks' culture and character is molded by history and geography and fauna and everything else. You aren't going to fix it by pretending the Ozarks can be just like the West Coast.

Arkansas is more rugged and sparse but only a little more. The reason I stay in Missouri is the laws are a little more free. For instance Missouri’s homeschool laws are much less restrictive, intact Missouri has very little laws restricting homeschooling. So in my opinion they are both equally amazing so I would look at the laws that would pertain to what you’re doing.

Move where you want who cares what the locals think they will just have to 5:35 get over it. I moved here from Dallas, TX. I have dealt with many extremely rude small minded people in the Ozarks and yes they hate outsiders. They will try to make you miserable every chance they get but the longer you stay and the more they see that they can't make you leave they will eventually begin to accept you. They might not like you but they accept the fact that you are a part of the community.

I want to use the word "when" instead of "if" I get that boulder moved, then I believe they can help me and I intend to try them again. It doesn't look like it will happen since I have to do everything by myself and I need the right help and don't have the money to hire someone. So it looks like I'll be stuck here. If the listeners plan to move to the Ozarks be forewarned - Jobs are terrible pay. There's plenty of jobs, but they are all $10-12 an hour. If you are a professional that is fortunate enough to take advantage of the Ozark region openings that is great and there are those profession, but most professionals get a wake-up call as they are used to metro area salaries. That's why in my area there are a lot of retirees on pension or SSI for regular income and then a ton of tourism, healthcare and marketing peoples.

This attitude is why I left rural Missouri, and I grew up there. The Ozarks are beautiful, but people are paranoid and bigoted and afraid of the "way of thinking" of outsiders. Of course bigots don't think they're bigots. They never do. Bigotry is seldom ever about hate; it's about fear, fear of what's different and fear of change, even when it's positive. They try to control other people's lives and say they're "protecting the kids" while threatening the wellbeing of marginalized kids of any kind - poor kids, lgbtq kids, whatever. It's not I spent 26 years in rural Missouri, and as a queer person, I never felt welcome there.
@piperlong544

And that's EXACTLY WHY YOU STAYED. You ENJOY being a professional "victim". I am a white man living in Cleveland Ohio. I HATE IT HERE because there are too many people like YOU who hate white people, straight people, Conservative people, etc.. Go where you are welcomed and stop trying to change the majority of the people in The Ozarks.

To answer part of your question. Many if not most of the small towns have natural food stores that have a pretty good selection of vegan options and other natural healthy foods. Like miniature family owned Whole Foods. Farmers markets are everywhere and natural healing and herbalism is popular and accepted fairly well here. While the Ozarks isn’t as racially diverse as large populated cities it does have a somewhat diverse population for the area. It’s certainly not uncommon to see people of color here and people of different cultures. There are quite a few Asian and East Indian people through out the Ozarks.

There is plenty of inclusion here. But in case you didn't know, the word "diversity" simply means "less white people." If you want multiculturalism, go to Seattle Wa, LA California, NYC, Chicago. Maybe you'd like Springfield Missouri. It's in the Ozarks, has Starbucks and Whole Foods. It's fairly "diverse" in its demographics. Peace. I
