about patching not buying - this is SO key. I totally agree. Stretch what you have to the limits before having to buy something.

In my experience 2 individual oscillators have a more likely chance of drifting out of sync whereas 2 oscillators on a single board stay in sync much better. I don't understand too much about the electronics, but someone told me it has to do with the physical components resonating and creating a sympathetic resonance which harmonizes with other physical components on the same plane.

I didn't know that. This is a really cool piece of knowledge, and it strengthens my propensity to continue to use a setup like I employ in this video. Drifting out of sync is a good sonical thing, imho... Thanks!✌️

I like your approach to modular, thank you for inspiring me.

When I was just starting out, I had only one "VCO" but I also had ripples and maths. I had a lot of fun setting Ripples to self oscillate, modulating the A-111-3, then passing that into the Ripples input to get a nonstandard FM feedback. Beginner's mind is real.

Beginner's mind is free.... ✌️ Hard to keep that attitude, though.

We could call this an inferiority complex oscillator. I like your dead-pan delivery. Monty Python would be proud.

Anything Monty Python makes me happy. ✌️ And, yeah, I agree on your choice of name.

Interesting video! I also use a little cluster of modules as a pseudo-complex analog oscillator (Befaco Pony VCO + 2hp Osc + Noise Reap Paradox 2)

The beauty of eurorack, isn't it! You can do almost anything you'd like, any combination, and there's a good chance you'll be pleased, intrigued... and come up with even more ideas.

@@axis_8 Just wanted to add that my own small 56 hp rack has a roughly “complex oscillator” in the form of the Noise Engineering “Loquelic Iteritas” featuring two oscillators slamming into each other, a third oscillator (an uPlaits) and two Distings Mk4s… all in an attempt to chase the Buchla dream. I live in the Bay Area of California and the majestic memory of Don Buchla haunts me as well. But Eurorack was the only way I could assemble the parts over 6 long years of reading, listening and watching RU-vid then buying likely candidates to even get close. We all owe heroic engineer Dieter Doepfer our gratitude for creating a somewhat cheaper solution to our goals… if you ever see him, buy him a beer!

@@unkatom Thanks for sharing, really appreciate it! And I second your sentiment concerning D. Doepfer. He really deserves all the beers in the world. Eurorack is endlessly gratifying, and thankfully within reach compared to a Buchla system. Cheers!

Gooooood stuff. The cs-l is the first and only analog oscillator I own but still gonna try out the trick you mentioned.

I never knew that about the car battery, thats interesting. Id be scared to connect a $5000 synth to a car battery.

I don't see a way into building a complex osc like this that is going to be cheaper then getting a complex. Exept if you already have some of the modules and just need to add one two cheaper modules then it is a good idea also the suggestion of the afterlater audio seem to be very good suggestions. Ps i just discovered your channel and i like your content.

Buchla and Moog take credit for this but the truth is they took it from others in Italy and Russia and them marketed it as if they invented it. PPL call Behringer about clowning but Buchla and Moog did it first and charge ridiculous money for the privilege.

I wish you had not added effects as that removes an understanding of these devices. I tend to look around on the web and study all kinds of devices and then I go to youtube and cut and paste the brand and model to locate demos. Despite the effects I found your video very informative. I try to keep from spending a lot of money on gear thus my modular is low budget in terms of not having the big built in multiple patch star modules. A while back I returned to using a Chipz VCO because it has 2 VCOs and a LFO in one unit and when self patched can create the kinds of effects you speak of here. Its LFO is fun because the noise can be used to create effects similar to a sample and hold. I have been pondering using different VCOs and have a Hysteria which by itself did not inspire me very much, which is why I removed it and put back Chipz originally. But, I thought maybe I had not really explored it enough to appreciate it. Do you think it is necessary to have access to all the different wave forms, or could one use a hysteria and another smaller simple VCO that only does a sine, or a square? I am eyeing the 12 hp area where I now have Chipz and thinking I could use Hysteria with a small 2hp device to keep doing these kinds of complex self patched oscillator combos, but I would need to have my other VCO be merely a 2hp device.

Thank you for the input! Yes, I agree, I should at least have included some examples without using reverb. I think you can do a lot with Hysteria and a second vco, and more so if you add modulation on the signals linking those two vcos. I think this is key with Hysteria given it has just one output. But if you at some time in the future would like to make an investment that would let you explore this field with a richer variety (and being a great vco in itself), I'd take a look at the two other vcos I mentioned in the video. And, btw, there's a new one on the market, The Wave Transformer from EarthQuakerDevices, a lot of bang for the buck.

@@axis_8 I try not to spend too much on my synth gear. I mostly buy used and wait for deals. i.e. instead of Maths I got a Vortex Generator off Etsy which was much cheaper even if it was new. Another option I am now pondering is to feed the output of one of my old Korg poly800 synths through some items in my rack and use that to modulate the Hysteria I already have. I am really looking at using more old hardware gear to feed into my modules these days.
