Pull up a reference song and it also sounds like crap. My buddy showed up with some beyerdynamics and I nearly shit my pants. I was always told that the athm50x’s were good. But naw. @raheart220
@raheart220 4 года назад
@@IeatPiggiesForLife Well, it's sort of relative to the price range and sound signature that you find yourself preferring. I and many other people in this hobby would highly recommend the Philips Shp9500 as an excellent all around entry can for those looking to get a taste of a more premium sound. An amplifier and DAC, DAP, or DAC amp combo unit is a MUST if you want to get the full taste of what your cans are capable of producing. Like he said, there are very affordable amps and dacs in recent years that perform exceptionally well. If you're looking for a portable setup i'd go with a DAP or portable amp/DAC combo unit. A couple examples would be the Fiio q1 Mk2 portable and the Acmee MF - 01 DAP, you can't really go wrong with either of those. If you want a cheap desktop experience then something simple and cheap like the Fiio EK10 would do just fine with the SHP9500's and run you only a little over $150 total I believe. Hope this helps lol I got carried away. Edit: This is a budget example not the multiple price points you requested as it would be too long if I wrote it lol

@@IeatPiggiesForLife or just get massdrop Sennheiser 58x for $150, dont really need an amp to get started. Enjoy those then purchase an amp when you are ready. 58x and 6xx are the safest picks at 150-220 range. The latter needs an amp more though.

Set a price range and then think about what you are trying to do. Is it listen from just a phone or PC or an audio system or all of the above. Is it for home or travel/commuting or both. These are just a few things to consider. I am a low/mid fi guy as I can't afford the high end stuff but have a great mix of stuff which includes IEM's (amazing bang for buck) and some new and 2nd hand headphones. If you really like music the only thing someone starting out needs to know is find something thats comfortable and sounds good for your type of music or particular application. That's basically everything the casual listener needs to know. A pair of headphones that are comfortable to wear should be the first consideration. Then sound and cost. No matter how great a pair of phones sound. If you can't comfortably wear them then they are useless. Forget about neutrality unless you're planing on being an audio engineer and mixing live or recorded sound. What an engineer needs and what a music lover needs are two different things. No two peoples ears are the same. what sounds good to you may not sound good to me. An engineer listens to music at high volumes. Their cans need to be neutral . They aren't enjoying the music they are listening for defects.

I own a couple of pricey headphones and enjoy experimenting with different sound signatures and headphone types, and am trying out some chifi in-ears soon. I still think that the M50x is good, but in certain areas. I don't feel like the hate for them is justified though. I often use them at work and sometimes find that they give impact (due to their V shape) to songs that I'd found boring before, and I don't think that's a bad thing. The harsh highs people speak of seem like a myth to me, as I never get fatigued from them (outside of the awfully uncomfortable ear cups), and have heard way harsher highs from other more popular audiophile headphones, like the HD 380s, or even the K712s sometimes. So yeah, I really wish people would get off the M50x hate train.

I agree that the M-50X sucks (at that price point) it's not a good headphone, I have tried it, my Roommate has it, however, I own the original M50 and they dont sound anything like the new M50X, they are not a great headphone but for that price (the original M50) is not bad, its a fun headphone and that's not the only headphone I have, I have several headphones, my favorite once HD 800S, again when people compare the HD 800 to the S, it bugs me to, their 2 very different headphones, My brother has the original a to HD 800 I've tried them several times, and I own the 1800 S. There's no perfect headphone there some things that I enjoy more one a $350 headphone for fun, compared to the $1600 one, I listen to a wide range of genres in music therefore I feel a need different headphones for different genres, The main thing I listen to is instrumental therefore the HD 800s are great for that, Also I think he should point out that amplifiers and DACs make a big difference I don't think enough people point that out, everybody just think that by headphone is plug and play, not really not an audio file standard. It's nice when reviewers point out the different dacks and amps that they used, and how different they make those headphone sound. It might seem like too much to take but it was really sad to hear people complain about a headphone that is not being driven or power properly. If nobody reads this I'm fine, and if you did and you don't understand what I'm talking because you're new to this, I apologize..... .. If you are a to be a true audiophile you'll get it eventually....lol

"Roll off" is part of the frequency response that dips down and keep dropping significantly. Bass tends to go in straight lines and doesn't reflect while high pitches do. Think about a subwoofer and running a range of frequencies through it the higher the pitch the less sound will be reproduced by the subwoofer. If you looked at the frequency response you'd see a "roll off" towards the higher frequencies.

I did sub BTW. Like your takes. PS. Luv to see you review maybe some more creative unique, unusual DAC Amp hook-ups/pairings. Creative in a sense. Just like that stuff. Not much on RU-vid for that. Zeos has done tad here and there, on the fly in reviews. Now I get not all Dacs pair nicely to certain Amps; and some are made to thrive more so with others. Having said this, hence, why I'd like to see more creative hook-ups. Creative, in that they combine well together, and aren't usually always thought of in a pairing or stacking. Rather, than just the jds and schitt stack (which are fine); or the common ones (and I have no beef with them); but would like to see some unique ones, that play good together. Just my thoughts. Thanks man. Great stuff. Know I'm late on this vid. Catching up. 🤘🏼👌🏼✌🏼

I still don't really understand the definition of "grain". I originally thought it talks about the definition of treble is hazy and "low-fi" but the more I listen to, the more it is caused by thr recording itself. So, I will be much appreciated if you can explain the meaning of grain !

That's one of those things where you just have to hear a headphone that has less of it to really understand. It has nothing to do with frequency response at all. Everything just sounds clearer with less fuzziness to the sound no matter if the headphone is brighter or darker

It's like when you listen to beats headphones a lot of it sounds kind of muddy and not very clear even though it may sound exciting, "fun" and really bassy it's just not good quality or detailed at all. That is an example.

Fun fact, most of the record labels you are currently listening to are being mix and mastered by 40 to 60 year old producers which can't hear above 16k frequency.....funny how "audiophiles" can hear them lol.

As someone has been trying hard to perfect the explanation of hi-fi audio or audio in general, you made a respectable attempt but I feel the explanation lacks structure and doesn't really connect to the view point of "someone outside the hi-fi community" as it felt like you were still trying to talk to or convince someone who has already "dipped their toe" in to audio but lacks the deeper knowledge of what makes a headphone desirable. I think starting with a breakdown on how headphones towards the average consumer are being marketed and how to avoid the over glorify jargon that would convince unknowing consumers to make what could be an unwise purchase. Then move on to explaining the different types of personal audio equipment starting with headphones, IEM's, and other forms of what can be considered portable audio as those outside the audiophile community can relate to this unlike jumping straight in to home and personal audio. (mention Bluetooth for the hell of it since many would ask anyway where Bluetooth stand) (Edit Note: beyond this point is the mark of an audio enthusiasts) Next would be of course the hardest part to move in to which would be the build type of a headphone, the differences and benefits, and practical use in day to day life (their daily driver). Speaking of drivers you have to Segway driver types and what they do to the overall sound signiture of a headphone and what is to be expected of a driver as this has a lot in relevance to build type. (brief talk about pads and how they can change stuff lol) Then comes the nitty gritty of Sound signiture, Soundstage, width and depth, precision, syballance and peaking etc. (dissecting how and what you hear from these headphones). What sub bass, bass, mids and highs are and where you can expect certain instruments to be under (most brass being lows to mids, female vocals mids to highs, etc.). Close off with what an amp and dac can do and benefits. From here it's like a relief lol. Overall love your stuff and style dms and would really like to see more people informed on how to look for audio and audio equipment (king of the hill propane and propane accessories joke). Final statements with introductory chi-fi in the description from open, closed, to iem. Mention gaming headphones for bonus points to those getting in as most people interested to learn tend to be gamers lol. (actual comment that isn't so much a critique on format is I'm pretty sure a good majority of non audiophiles don't know what a m50x is and still follow the religion of Dr. Dre and the apple product related apostles *hiss sounds*)

You're not exactly wrong here, the thing is most people don't just simply sit on a comfortable chair and listen to music. Music to the majority, especially pop music today is used as a mere means of background noise to drown out ambient noises on the train and such. As a result, people don't care enough to spend extra, even if it means only extra $50-100 for amazing sound quality, because they are already happy enough that they have shitty $10 earbuds to drown out the ambience in the first place. And when people do actually want to get better sound quality, marketing and advertisement is the very first thing that they look at. For example, Beats by Dre, the marketing and advertisement of these products are omnipresent. Go to China, massive Beats logos, go to Australia, Beats posters again, even go to places like Thailand, Beats advertisements will be everywhere. To the average consumer, they perceive Beats like a universal headphone company because it is extremely popular. And unfortunately, the average consumer falsely equates this universal marketing and popularity with good quality, hence everyone still buys Beats. It is because someone's friend, relative, co-worker etc. wears Beats, the average consumer will want to buy Beats to fit right in with everyone else they know. It really is that simple. My point is, the average consumer simply don't care, why would they listen to some random stranger on the internet if their friends all say Beats are amazing?

@@zzz66688 Exactly! Which was my very critique of the video and something I feel should be explained as a starter to the introduction. Sadly a lot of people won't be convinced just by this brief summary and would even further only be convinced if you give a God tier set up to show them what they are missing out on. Which kinda ruins the fun of being an audiophile if you went from apple ear buds to something like an orpheus set up or stax. Like that is just comical. Offering practical setups and advices like at the very least get a phone that has its own decent dac and suggest a pair of portable headphones /good IEM's to this set up. Or a multi purpose, compact audio device that is discrete for commute or gym. But I digress lol...

@@Cycadia & zzz....I'm not entirely getting your convo. The likelihood of a random person watching this video is very slim. Somebody who clicks on it would have an interest in audio, music and taking it a tiny step further..perhaps an interest in audio quality. As for beats...well, I thought they kinda hit their peak a few years ago. The trend seems over imo. Notwithstanding, buying beats is surely better than stock earbuds that come with your phone. So, maybe they'll be a stepping stone for interested music lovers. Marketing is marketing in any industry. Those that take more than a casual interest will likely do some research. How much, well that's up to them. My son a number of years ago now...never went down the beats path...he went momentum's....now moved onto focal and has some cool iem's. His mates the same, although they have different brands.

@@nostro1001 well the point of the video was to get someone who isn't in to audio or aware of what they themselves want to look for. As for assuming that someone with no interest would ever click the video would not only be selling DMS short as I believe his edit style and way of talking can appeal to a wide audience, but would also assume no audiophile would want to share the video to their non audiophile friends to spread the word. I know I for example have shared with a couple discord friends.

@@Cycadia Hey Cycadia...nope, I wasn't at all discounting DMS , his explanatory comments or style in the slightest. In fact, I commended him on all of the above in a separate thread. I really enjoy younger people having a crack at what is typically the domain of older middle aged men (zzzzz). I think it brings a freshness to the industry that is sorely needed. It would be great if viewers here would share with their non audio passionate friends, with the aim of giving them some easy to use info that may encourage them to take their listening requirements to the next level. However, my point still stands. People do not generally click on videos unrelated to their interest. Further, they wouldn't (such as this), appear on their feed. This dropped in on my feed, hence clicking, as audio is likely my main RU-vid interest. Cheers and happy listening. 😃😃
