@dinguskhan9772 Please carry that energy for every other lore change GW handles in that regard. Its how they've almost always handled it and will do things in the future. Like I say in the video. It is lazy, but I cannot see how its that big of a deal. I forgot to mention in the vid, but the exact same retcon happened to Knight/Titan pilots allowing women pilots. I'm still punching through HH (finished Fear to Tread.) so the only reason I know about all this noise is from Reddit. Which is not a good place to find out about anything and the drama went on for *days*. My first reaction to the Femstodes is that it's going to detract from the Sisters of Silence. I love that the Custodes and the SoS work together. The SoS impressed Nathaniel Garro at the beginning of "Flight of the Eisenstein". Without getting into the Grey Knights, they are the only reliable way to fight demons and psykers. Why add women to a previously male only faction when there are already badass female only factions? The SoS had at least one good short story in one of the anthology books (it's been a while, i forget the name) but they had PoV perspective and communicated through sign language. Why couldn't we just get more of that?! I will admit the concepts are not necessarily mutually exclusive of each other. But it still feels like it was harder to write them as their own faction so they included women into an exsisting faction out of laziness.
@glueboy
@glueboy 4 месяца назад
I don't agree that they'll detract from the SoS. Though not for the reasons some might assume lol. Mainly, cant detract from a faction GW clearly doesnt care about. Which sucks because yeah they are so cool! But also I don't think that the gender line matters that much to be honest? Not saying you aren't aware of that either. You literally said as much there. Just when I look at what functionally changes with female custodes, I dont see a lot. And at least personally I dont see why the Custodes have to be men to offset the Sos? I get it fucks with the duality vibe but eh? Its not something thats harped on in lore as being important, its more just a distinction that *was* there. But big agree its still lazy. Honestly this shit wouldnt be a problem if GW wasnt allergic to lore additions over retconning everything lol. Of course though, you don't have to agree. Thats at least my perspective alongside yours lol.

It´s not about THAT we got them, but HOW we got them and of course WHEN we got them - and nobody can act as if this is a coincidence whatsoever! This is what I was talking about in my opinion man. I genuinely cannot wrap my head around how any of that matters. And yeah I dont think theres a deeper conspiracy on the timing? Theres no proof, and that sounds franky goofy when we have word going against that being said like 6 years ago. The idea that one of the best performing companies in the UK will be brought to heels over... women in power armor instead of their actual, for real bad business decisions is wild. But I still stand by everything I said in my opinion section. I fully believe this is being overblown in comparison to the countless other retcons they've done.

On the Custodian creation, I've only read more detail about it one book, Wolftime, where a Custodian has a discussion with a nobleborn who was not accepted into the Custodes. There it was explictly stated that it's not actually the firstborn children who are taken by the Custodes by those families who are seen as worthy, but rather the genetic materials of a child that is then constructed into a Custode. So there's never an actual child that is turned over, at least if I remember correctly, as the Custode does state that the slightly embittered noble would have never actually been a Custode himself if it had been his family. This isn't a correction, but rather an extension to the Custode explanation in the video. Also I slightly mentioned this in a previous discussion, but I realized this was partially the reason GW kind of had to introduce the female Custodes having always been there like they did as it just would have taken eternity for one to pop up if the order just now started making them. Additionally there is this slight issue, that I referred to in my more negative comment here, in that in the fluff there is this resistance in shaking up things with Custodes or implying that those in the leadership aren't fully on top of things. So while the kind of a story where the Custodes have to re-examine their ways hits that wall as even in the current books, which I've unfortunately read too many, there is that constant hesitation about the kind of a self-reflection that story would require.
@glueboy
@glueboy 4 месяца назад
I can see that element also being there in reluctance to portray the Custodes in any way negative. Cause I do agree thats an issue with Custodes books lol. Though that is a very interesting addition to their creation. I can see that as a cool extension like you said, as the codex and the Blood Games short story in the HH directly talk about using a full on infant. Honestly makes me wonder if maybe theres certain situations where they need to do one or the other? I wanna see that expanded on more now tbh. Thats a dope tidbit.

The literal only thing that rubs me the wrong way about the femstode reveal is its just a weird choice that I feel like misunderstands the setting. I think the Emperor's murder monsters all being male is to cement the idea that in no way, shape, or form are they meant to breed and propagate on their own. The obsession with peak male beauty is also kind of a funny and goofy quirk that's kind of interesting about Emps imo. There's nothing inherently wrong with a female Custodes, it just doesn't really fit in with Big E's whole vibe. I feel like this decision might have been made to have inclusivity amid the peak of the "power ranking". Which is never a thing I'm ever hungup on. Again, it just feels like a weird misunderstanding of the setting. Inquisitors are actually the peak power fantasy of the setting, because they can actually behave autonomously for one thing lol. Like having a female counterpart to a hateful xenophobic dogmatic maniacal murder-marchine that can spin blades like turbines but are completely inert of all personhood feels odd when women have already been Inquisitors since forever. Inquisitors can also just kinda do their own thing for the most part and come in a billion flavors. It's also an odd decision when modern GW has pretty much stripped the Sororitas of any of that nuanced punk energy that oozed from the jump with John Blanche's OG codex illustration. Yes these women are religious police stormtroopers, but they've been taken from desperate situations and indoctrinated. So there's a very interesting contrast of zealot and girl from a broken world that's just not even remotely there anymore. Sororitas are either demure pin-up models or mutilated raving fanatics. If anything the squandered potential there actually gets me pretty annoyed. So yeah. It just feels like a weird decision in a setting that already has a ton of cool female aspects (that have woefully been kind of curdled over the years imo). Much love if you read all this, thanks for the video it was super entertaining.
@glueboy
@glueboy 4 месяца назад
While I personally disagree with your take here (aside from John Blanche's codex art being absolutely fantastic). As I personally don't get that vibe from the Custodes. And I also like the direction the SoB have taken. Though only because I think inbetween their original debut and now around like 2001 they were way more pure sexy nun pinup model in design and I personally dont think that vibe fits 40k. This same deal actually hit the Slaanesh models too funny enough lol. I forget the name of the model designer who was responsible for that. Saying that, I highly respect the fact you fully explained your thought process. Thats the kinda shit I like seeing on my channel. Idc if people disagree with me, as long as they can back it up with either evidence or real rationale. Extra bonus if they're actually being respectful about it which you were. So very high kudos for what its worth.
@morazzouqi146
@morazzouqi146 4 месяца назад
@@glueboy My pleasure! Thanks for taking the time to read it and respond. It's funny because that era of sexy nuns with guns is completely omitted from my mind in favor of the atmosphere from Daemonifuge's first arc (highly recommend checking that out if you haven't already). You're totally right though, they were pretty one-note for the longest time. I think you're talking about the Diaz daemonettes , which I agree with you on. Don't even get me started on Slaanesh and how that whole faction is handled. That HH story Reflection Crack'd is controversial for how it handles the whole Fulgrim getting un-possessed thing, but its fascinating how he just tells us the meta on Slaanesh's brand of entropy through complication (or sophistication as they would likely believe). Thinking about this setting takes up a lot of my mental real estate (as you can probably tell) so I'm just glad people enjoy it and talk about it. Participation is a very fun part of the whole thing. When people start acting emotionally towards these topics, I just file that as a whole other thing. It's like, ok, thanks for self selecting yourself as someone to avoid lol.

Apologies in advance for being negative on something, but man do I dislike the Custodes in the books, especially if they are the narrative characters. They are just characters the writers really struggle with as it is a bunch of perfect people discussing how perfect they are and/or other mortal characters just gazing on them in marvel. Like there was an interaction in Wolftime where I thought they were going to address that insane superiority complex when a character basically was calling them out about necessarily knowing everything, except then it ended with the Custode essentially showing him how that character was actually wrong to look at the Custodes with any sort of negativity. When thinking on stories where I've enjoyed the Custodes, even there I realize it is more of how they were utilized. For example, the Custodes in The Martyr's Tomb was a neat addition, but more because of the role he has there and how things end. Of the character itself can't say much. The sole expection to this, and yes I've read the Wraight Custodes books, is Colquan in the Dawn of Fire/Dark Imperium books as he actually has a pretty neat character arc, even though weirdly enough they do the real setup for it after the actual DI trilogy.
@toniviskari417
@toniviskari417 4 месяца назад
Two additional notes on this, because I really write too much. First is that for a while I really wanted a scene where either Logan or Ragnar just decks a Custodes, but then I realized that what I really, really need in my life is a buddy-cop story with a Custode and Lukas the Trickster. Just give me that one thing, GW. Second, despite my complaints about Custodes, my favorite Imperial Fists scene involves them and I have long thought this channel would appreciate it. The scene in question was in The Regent's Shadow, for the worst Wraight book I've read, largely due to why Valdor is one of the worst characters in WH40k for me. However, to avoid that rant, in that book the Imperial Fists arrive to Terra in turmoil there and while first people are delighted, then they realize the company is coming directly from Fall of Cadia and are the haggard remains of a company. Yet despite that, the Fists just become an absolute gem as they are just insane badasses from the word go. The central example of this is when the Imperial Fists Captain or Sergeant, I don't remember which, laughs in the face of the Custodes face and calls him a child. And the aftermath of this is the Custode walking away pondering that perhaps he actually was a child. I can't do the scene justice.
@glueboy
@glueboy 4 месяца назад
The only thing that will overtake my Custodes simping is me simping over the Imperial Fists. We stay winning. That scene is really funny. Only shame is that yeah it is in a very lame af series. Because I agree with you. Custodes have a bad track record in books. Like top of my head, the only Custodes rep in books I have fully enjoyed have been in the Vaults of Terra series and the Master of Mankind. Tbh I think (exception of Master of Mankind since they are more front and center. Also I think they were still solid.) Custodes make really good side characters. And just when they're protags I havent been as interested. That buddy cop adventure idea sounds fantastic though. Absolute top tier idea and would be a hysterical read I can imagine.
@toniviskari417
@toniviskari417 4 месяца назад
@@glueboy Just to add that for me, the best Custodes scenes almost always involve them dying. Not because I hate them, but because they are such perfect warriors that the story beat is almost inherently what is needed to bring one down? Although this might be partially why they did something else with Colquin as he is a dude who has to stand next to Guilliman and he has this neat scene in one of the first Dawn of Fire books where he keeps going through scenarios about how to kill Guilliman if the need arises. Even in his mental exercises, the only one where he succeeded in that was when Bobby G knelt before the Golden Throne. Also the Watchers of the Throne is such a weird book series as they are well written, Wraigh is really good at that, but it also constantly undercuts the narrative protagonists in order to put over Valdor. To the degree that they main character literally achieve nothing on their own in The Regent's Shadow. Fortunately at least it had a dope discussion at the end about if the Empire will break Guilliman or not and the Imperial Fists were dope as hell. Like seriously, my second favorite portrayal of that Chapter in a WH40K books.

If they don't care about there lore or true representation and diversety in there lore like it used to be and kneeling to ideological possessed people.... whats the point... this is the "normal reaktion". It is just the beginning of a bigger problem. For example, they just giving out the first they/them trance modul... Pushing identety politics in there latest lore book releases and more (since atleast a year ago). The wierd thing are people like you trying to brush of something obvius just because you are blind to it and don't have the knowledge to be able to analise the insidius ramafication of it and therefore trying to downplay it... I understand not being interested in philosophy or politics, but that also means you have a blindspot towards it. As a centric Swede I put the gender ideologi cult belivers in the same place as other science deniers like the far right people in the US that belives lizards rule the planet. That these people are trying to use this cultural property/ip (40k/AoS) to futher there influance is not a good thing... And how you can "defend" that is the wierd thing.
@glueboy
@glueboy 21 день назад
I dont consider it a defense. I consider it a lack of care. My position is purely that nothing fundamentally has changed and people are being overdramatic. Having seen that Warhammer+ short for example. I'm even more in that stance. The *only* difference is the fact it happens to be a woman under that helmet. The rest of the short shows her being the exact expectation of a Custodes. I hear this talk of it being the "beginning of 40ks death" and that "everything will degrade." I only care about the tangible real effects. Not conspiracy talk. I haven't seen anything happen yet. And as someone who also doesn't clutch my pearls over a gay person appearing in a book (which has been happening for like 10 years btw) I genuinely don't care. And still think its weird other people care too. I do hope this energy is held towards the other changes they've done too btw. Since they changed the Necrons pretty substantially and said they were always like that. Or the Votann, or T'au, or Genestealers being Nids not a different xenos. Or even worse! The time they changed Titan pilots to include women in 5th or 6th edition! Carry that energy for changes that serve the exact narrative purpose or I can't take any of that shit about female custodes seriously.

For me, the strong emotional reaction to having female custodes had more to do with them opening the floodgates to do what they have done to every other IP. I think the idea of female custodes is fine. Stormcast etetnals have women. No issues there. The problem is that they always Gaslight the real issue and just say we don't like women, when the REAL issue is that we don't want our beloved IP to become a raging pronoun and flag parade. It sucks that no one gets that argument. They always Gaslight it and discredit our stance by boiling it down to the lowest common denominator. At the end of the day, we all have real lives and jobs and families. It just sucks to have nowhere to go to or to turn to get away from modern day politics and ideological possession.
@glueboy
@glueboy 4 месяца назад
I mean this with the utmost care here. Not being backhanded or anything, but I really don't think 40k is doing that. GW is famously protective of their IP, sometimes a tad bit *too* protective. This is a change they've wanted to do for years according to one of their author's comments he made like 6 years ago. The only real outcome is GW can now recycle Stormcast heads more. Also not to be the "muh media literacy" guy cause thats a bit cringe to harp on constantly. But I think the whole modern day politics thing is only a big deal because its just more noticed and discussed online? Cause its always been there in every big series. Like 40k has had it for a good long while. Long punk roots and thats kinda the effect when you rip shit from Dune lol. That series is just Frank Herbert's political opinions and his distrust of religion. Also a good few older books that are straight up political commentary. Theres an old Deathwatch book based on the Iraq War. Or like original series Star Wars. Its on record from Lucas that its based on WW2, the Empire is inspired in part by Germany and the United States. And even episode 6 is just space Vietnam. Idk my take at least is that it only feels like political shit is invading these stories because we now have a way for more people to be exposed to critical analysis who might not have wanted/cared to see it. Then once something has been pointed out, you're cursed to see it constantly lol.

@@StigPrice my guy, they are all individually altered to be perfect, that’s the entire point of the custodes They are just alien as babies and through a process of ancient technology and probably a bit of magic they become the perfect soldier, there is vertically no difference between the male and female custodes at this point
