My greatest obstacle was thinking I was too old. Got over it and at 50 I started Larping and never looked back. I have even met some Larpers of 80+. There is even a bonus.... all of the young bucks tend to vastly under estimate you if you have grey hair... well... once anyway.
My problem with larping is, that I have no friends to go with. I would have to go alone and my biggest problem is talking to people I dont know and get to know them. I am pretty shy and would never go to a stranger and talk to them. Wouldnt know what to say.
I had the same problem! But what I did was try to look up some people on their Facebook page and got to know them before the larp. So out of character, we decided our characters were already friends, which helped a lot in character. Plus, that gave me some friends too
As a grown woman that is my problem too. Way too many "normal" people get freaked out or have some negative issues with this. I just see it as a hobby and something fun to escape from assholes.
Don't let that deter you! Keep in mind that you will NOT be playing yourself at the game. Imagine the character you would like to play, is the character brave, noble, outgoing, introspective? The solution is simply ACTING as this person. Keep in mind the R in LARP stands for roleplay! You will likely find many people who have a hard time socializing at a LARP, and they will welcome you as one of their own! LARPs are always looking to gain more regular players.
I have quite a few problems. 1. I am an underage wizard. As well as that, even if there was a game I could go in, my parents would NEVER go with me. 2. There is none anywhere near me. My parents would not let me make my own. 3. My parents won't drive me to any LARPs. Guess I'll keep playing with my friend for a few more years. T^T
Maybe find a friend's parent that's interested, so you and your friend + their parent can go, just make sure your parents trust that adult, and have met them before asking,
it's always good to see if there are any youth larps in your area! i am currently a member and volunteer at a small youth-geared larp group in my area, and there are members as young as fourth grade. try doing a google search-- some larps run out of youth martial arts or swordplay hobby groups, too ^^ to clarify---i am in the US, so i'm not sure about the UK larp scene, but still good to check
Hi! I play a character whose religion revolves around the suffering of others. irl, I don't like seeing pictures of people crying on Facebook because I want to give them hugs and make them feel better. WE CAN SEPARATE IN AND OUT OF CHARACTER.
You would worship a chaotic god, So If it is Warhammer do Slaneesh, or Nurgle because they are brutal but if you're doing other ones do one close to the Theme, I would do a Warrior character Who worships A Chaotic War God
i would say it doesn't have to be, some take place in modern time (where you can not buy anything new), you can thrift, rent many props, and if you calculate travelling to places, the cost of a lard is often on-par with real hotels and food. you just have to be creative.
Yeah, all of these are me I’m afraid of being judged I’m underaged There are little to no LARPS in my area I can’t go shopping for cool costumes for a number of reasons I’m quite nervous when it comes to roleplaying and being around a lot of strangers
As an almost-career NPC I totally support the idea of NPCing for a game or two if you're new to LARP or are looking into a new game. As Cheyenne said it's usually cheaper, if not free so there's that. Beyond that, if you are new to the hobby, it usually will give you a chance to try out a multitude of roles, combat styles, and expose you to the rules of the game so you can see what you like, and if that particular game is for you. You also tend to spend more time out-of-game either on trails waiting for PCs or in Logistics getting into your NPC roles so you can ask questions and get to know the players and community, and possibly make a few friends. Plus, you usually earn a good amount of build/experience/service/whateverthegamecallsit so when you DO come into game as your glorious hero you have a few extra points to spend and aren't immediately killed by a light breeze, which is always a feature I like.
I created Japan's first English LARP group, cause I wanted to do LARP and never had a chance to do it back in my home country of Canada. I found a large LARP group in Canada; Underworld LARP, and they were awesome with the support for me to start up a game in Japan. Ya, Japan is a big country but we are located in the middle of Japan. We have had people come from around Tokyo and Kyoto. People will travel if they want to LARP. I started the group in 2015, just made a FB page, and it was a lot of word-of-mouth. Our group has grown and now we have a dedicated place (our own place in the middle of an Eco-Reserve!). So, if you want to LARP, and you don't have a group in your area, then find a big LARP group and ask if they would support you to start a group in your area. Many good groups would do this, including Underworld. Good luck!
We actually have a lot of players with bad knees! In the type of larp I do, there is always PLENTY to do even if you can't run. There are people who just show up and run in-game taverns and shops, there are people who cast magic and do not engage in combat, there is definitely a place for everyone in larp. :)
There are many forms of LARP - and not every LARP contains running around in the woods. What styles of games there are in general depends on your location (LARPing cultures around the world have quite a bit of variation), but if you're in the US, you can check out if parlor LARPs are for you.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who turned to roleplaying games to help anxiety. I'm going from d&d to larp. Just having some trouble finding a larp near me. But moving to Colorado after college so I'm ready to start a new hobby.
Andrea Gregory oh awesome! Yes, Larp is a great way to meet new people and make friends when you first move to a place. You can also search Facebook groups for games nearby. It has helped me so so much, even just the benefits of being part of a community that actually meets up to see each other. It really does make a difference.
I didn't leave my room for like 2 years basically then went to amtgard cause i saw it online.. helped me get out of my shell and found a job like 2 weeks later.
Actually, the first LARP I attended I did as a player character. And that was a mistake. The game lasted 3 days and only at the last day I've realized that nobody is going judge me as a person, but only my character, so no problem if I went all crazy. I should have gone as NPC.
Also, if you are nervous about Larping, if you create your character, as long as everything fits into the scene, you can play someone that is nervous and shy as your first character. If you do though, it is recommended to either bring friends along to protect you or try to get to know some of the people in the Larp, either during or if you can, before and try to band with them. Maybe they can even teach you a thing or two about combat.
Oh my gosh, I very much hope I didn't make you feel bad, oh no! There is nothing wrong with being between jobs, there ARE quite a few larpers who transition all the time or don't have regular jobs. "Get a job" is just a common thing said to LARPers and it's become a negative stereotype somehow, and while there are very accomplished people playing, there are just as many people who are still finding their way. Many people actually GET jobs through connections made through larp! I know I certainly have! I didn't have a job when I started either!
Nah, you didn't make me feel bad. :) The anxiety were already there from months earlier. But it is one of the things that prevents me rn from trying out LARP. Since it's hard to travel when you have little to non income.
I know it’s been a year, but if you can get down to Kansas our chapter let’s you npc completely for free (not including $30 yearly fee after the first event) along with food and a place to sleep! As long as you bring a black outfit, an upbeat mindset and a ton of energy we’ll give you enough action to run you into the ground! Even if you can’t get down to Kansas a lot of places offer at least discounts if you npc.
My biggest barrier is I have some SEVERE anxiety, and I don't mean I just get anxious, I mean full on body spasms, nausea, dissociation, sobbing anxiety. Like taking a handful of xanax anxiety, and it's really scary to me that I'd be in public, and possibly acting really cringey, and possibly even being filmed doing it. I'm also disabled, and the physical activity would be really difficult for me but I'm sure there are ways around that. The final problem is I am on disability, and therefore am so poor I often go many days without food so that only allows me to go to LARPs in me area, without strict costume rules, as I can't afford costumes or gas.
I suppose my biggest problem is there's the social anxiety, and the disconnect from people lately. So you read about how to improve things, and it's like, join a club to make friends! And then I'm like! Yeah! Okay! Oh. Oh, no wait, that's terrifying. And it helps to have a friend to bring along but.... Oops. Don't have one of those to bring.
Only thing was: I'm too old to start with larp.. but think it's only a thing about fitness. :D Will be at my first larp this year.. so I'm rly excited and hope not to collapse after a few hours. :D
Thank you so much! This helped me so much I'm actually going to my first Larp in May (I wish sooner but schedule conflicts) AND IM SUPER PUMPED. this video probably answered almost every question i had about larp. I've found a SOLAR Larp near me and got in touch with them through Facebook your channels first video was actually what got me into Larp in the first place. I think everyone in the Larp community can thank you for the wonderful show Called Larp House
My first character died on Sunday. Been playing him most weekends for 2 years now. It feels weird that I'm sad that I'm not able to play this fictional character anymore. Any of your characters been killed off too soon?
MrShrimpit not my own character, but my character's spouse died suddenly and without warning. That made her really hard to play and and it did make me really sad for a while! So sad that I thought I was gonna have to stop playing her. I talked with my plot staff about it and they helped me out, maybe yours could help you? What I plan to do when Petra retires is to make her an "extra dimensional" character so that I can bring her to larp games around the country and the world. Depending on her retirement of course. Be open with your GMs about how you're feeling, maybe they can at least help you come up with a character that you're even more excited about!?
I don't play with a sword and shield...but my hobby of milsim is basically the same...and I've learned more from MILSIM than i care to admit to most people i meet or my chain of command.
I'm not trying to offend anyone by this question (I'm sorry if I do!) but would Cosplay count as a type of LARP? I'm a cosplayer myself, and when I go to conventions we usually roleplay, would that be different then?
As far as I'm concerned, if people are roleplaying or in-character, Cosplay totally counts as a type of larp! I consider Cosplay to be the sister hobby of larp.
I don’t consider cosplay larp bc you are portraying characters that already exist and even if you are making your own character, you aren’t acting out with a story or improving
@@sofifi03 while I MOST ASSUREDLY admire the detail and RP that goes into cosplay, it is not LARP, for the reasons Sophia just stated. You are not YOUR OWN character, you are not a character with PERSONAL motivations and goals, and you are NOT operating within a structured area of common lore. All that said, the skills needed to be a successful COSPLAYER dovetail very neatly into the ability to DO YOUR OWN THING in an RP environment. If you like cosply, try out a LARP; I promise, you will not regret it!
Starting as an NPC is great I see many people who end up with a character idea that doesn't quite fit with the LARP they are going like one time I did a dark and brooding medieval character for a LARP where Santa Claus was real and appeared to give players gifts. After that I made a more cartoonish character that lived his life on a mine and wanted to conquer the whole world with no clear idea of basic concepts such as what grass is.
@@sommer2492 Google "larping groups near me" or start your own. To start own: make a poster: Get a price of paper , write a start and end time, and the place. Make it like 3 weeks before the actual date.Put ALL the details on here.other than characters. Choose a setting!!! Is it gonna be mediaeval? Is it gonna be futuristic? Is it gonna be present tense? Is it gonna be an army setting, a war? Include the setting in your POSTER Choose a location, Maybe if it's future tense it could be in a regular city Or if it's mediaeval maybe in the woods, set up little huts to "live in" (that bits optinal) Character: Choose a name you like A story Are you going to be part of a cult or a religion? Maybe even a god? The president of your larping city?? Maybe even just a normal person. Maybe a goblin. What age group you aiming for? Any? 11-19? What will be tolerated? Stealing other people's gold,? Or no? Selling larp things with your fake or real currency? Killing other people's characters in their sleep? Death: just like a real person, you die, you can't come back, however you can create a new character. Just not the same as the one before, or it sucks. Like you can't die and just become the president again.
I would love to LARP, but... For some reason this problem keeps occurring. I feel like I may be the only person with this problem, but I could be wrong. I have a habit of making character designs and just characters in general, but they have to fit into some overarching story or I will change or forget them, even if they have a backstory. I'm not sure why I have this problem, but this could also be part of why I can't make a personal properly. It doesn't fit into a narrative. Please help?
Npc. Simple answer. Most chapters need all the npcs they can get so you would be appreciated, given a discount for the event(in most cases), you would be given all the larping action you can handle and although I’ll admit pcing is definitely superior in a lot of ways, npcing is a ton of fun and gives a lot more downtime along with a simplicity that just lets you enjoy the game without worrying too much about ad-libing or anything. Give it a try!
My religious life is, complicated. But I will take your advice as best I can. And thanks for that point as it was probably my biggest concern in some ways.
Just subed because I love the idea of LARP now. I didn't know anything about it when I saw the Shout Out video over on GD Art but then I came over and I am WOWED! I am so looking into this and going to see what I can get into. I love ren fairs and D&D and this seems like my two favorite things mixed together. Great video, and I am so enjoying the channel. Thanx!
I'm going to a medieval summercamp! It's a week long and on the first day you choose 6 classes (swordfighting, candle making, blacksmithing, poi) and do those classes for 6 hours every day for that week!
I was skeptical of your video at first, BUT this is a fantastic breakdown and advisory video :) Lots of good info. Been a part of Dagorhir Battle Games for 6 years now myself and have seen alot and learned much about the community. Miss you nailed it! Started watching Mo Mo rexently and can highly reccommend good info on a variety of LARPs, quite entertIning too. Larp Girl definitely, a friend of mine had the pkeasure of meeting Kaza at Bellum Artanis a bit ago, mr Tinkourne Darkwater. Lastly check out a smaller channel calked Larpgasm. good info from a 20 year vet making vids on multiple LARPs. Keep it up!
I recently found you from MoMo and honestly I wished I found you guys sooner All my inner desire that been shoved down because of this stuff is like Argh lol thank you for opening up that door I never knew the community was so big!! thank you!!
Deciding to get off my butt and go larping was one of the best decisions I have ever made. In general larping has made me develop into who I am today. I was skeptic during my first larp game. I was also very nervous. But the minute I stepped into the fray, which involved fighting mirror images and in game vikings, I was hooked. Everyone I had met was so unique and just amazing in general. I wanted to go larping mainly for the costuming...but it soon developed as I absorbed the story and the characters. Larping has helped me build relationships with people in and out of character and for that I am thankful for the hobby.. I know there are people here that feel nervous...but you really shouldn't be. You are going to be immersed in an entirely different world where your budget or age does not matter. I've seen individuals with homemade boffer swords still kick butt and take names. I was so immersed in their character that I could care less about their budget weapon. Also, don't fret with age. Many of us in particular play characters who are older or younger than their actual age. I am an 18 year old playing a 24 year old german mercenary...and let me tell you...it's amazing. I really enjoy the faces of people when they actually find out my age. But seriously. Go out there and seize the day. Go larping. Forget what your anxiety or worries tell you. There is a wonderful larping community out there who would be glad to have you!
This was a great video. I actually came from Mo Mo O'Brian and this really was a nice video for beginners. I have known about the community of larping for awhile but never was part of it myself. So thank you for this. It really makes me feel more comfortable about wanting to LARP.
Hi Az, no idea if youre reading this, but I just came back here to send this video to a few new people I'm bringing to their first larp this year, and I wanna thank you for giving me and many others the gut to go out and do this shit :) to this day it's much appreciated
"If someone really wants to judge you, it's more about them than it is about you" - Pure wisdom! We are all really judging ourselves. It makes reading troll comments entertaining.
Thank you! This has really helped my nerves as i am not confident but larping sounds fun and i think it will help me develop confidence as well as spend time with friends :D
I searched and there's literally no larps in my entire COUNTRY. Guess I'm making a larp :P Thanks for making this video, it was a lot of helpful information!! :D
I better do my studying before I do a Superhero LARP with my friend, as I would like to be a Doctor Strange esc character and don't want to accidentally be overpowered.
Thank you so much for the tips and the quote at the end. ❤ I live in Alaska currently so there is like next to nothing out here.. and on top of that I dont know anyone who is into larping. My husband knows I'm a very big nerd at heart but larping just isnt his cup of tea. That being said, I'm looking forward to trying to make some friends on Facebook before beginning my adventures. I'm super excited looking at all the larp vlogs and beautiful costumes and trinkets. And I cant wait to see WHERE larping takes me. I hope to go to Polands College of Wizardry too!
I keep coming back to this video. I'm physically disabled and I dont know how I would larp or how my mobility devices would be immersed. I would love to larp and your tik toks are really helping me feel like I'm in the community even if I'm not in an irl larp!
went to my first larp after ages of watching your stuff! IT WAS SO AWESOME! made so many new friends they are the most accepting and interesting people, I took part in 6 BIG rituals on my first time so much plot so much fun so many laughs. Greencloaks UK 20/10 would reccommends!
So my entire boarding-school is based on Role Playing and we do LAPR'ing every day in classes, and I can only say that jump into it! It can help build you as a person, and it has helped me get great friends and have awesome scenes and interactions! It is so awesome once you break out of your shell, and an entirely different kind of freedom!
AnErcaWhaleAppears YEA it's been great for me but! Be careful of scammers! Make sure the seller has a history before you buy. I've found some really great stuff on there on the whole :)
I have been larping for over 10 years and I have always had cheap but very nice clothing and I had problems with my self confidence (to some extent I still do), due to my experience with bullies. I was bullied from a young age and my escape was my character Meverinniv a human thief (a very, very, very bad thief, who could only tell the truth and could not lie). He represents my happiness and a very light and funny part of me. Then we have my main Núduir the half-elven jack of all trades (he is good att fighting, knows magic and is good in archery), however he is not treated equal and is an outsider. He use to survive by being a sword for hire, until his father was assassinated. Núduir then took the task of becoming a dragonslayer just like his father (his mother was killed by the dragon he hunts). Núduir represent what I have gone through, my sorrow, my depression, my vulnerability, but also my strength, my stubbornness and my very way of surviving by standing my ground. You made an excellent video, which I will refer in my videos in the future.Thank you!
WOW! this has gotten me excited to start LARPing! there aren't any events around me, so location is my biggest issue .. BUT! that won't stop me, ill get to an event eventually!
what i realized after learning so much about the LARP community was that due to LARP-ing being so expensive, you might even find material in your own home to make character costumes, props, and other stuff.
Great video, just found it now. I am considering giving LARP a shot, though honestly weather is a pretty big issue (gotta love the frozen north). I am also worried about messing up or just not being good at it. I tend to be pretty reserved (not shy, but reserved) in real life, so I am not too sure.
What kepped me from going the first time was nervousness that I may not be good enough role player, that I would do something wrong and ruin it for everyone. So when my girlfriend dragged me to my first one, I decided to do a traveler who does not speak the language of the land. I speak many languages and would alternate between them so no one could understand me. That way, I was able to be shy and bumble around, act like a tourist who needs everything explained to me without breaking immersion, and as I grew more confident, so did my character who began learning the language and adapting into the society. I think that was my best move, it really healped with anxiety
Chiming in from the living history community: The thrift store is one of our common haunts as well. The medieval scribe in my group found a simple small vase that made for a perfectly period cup.
wait i lost the part where you mentioned an app to see if there are any local LARP. i saw a small group at a park on sundays but all the local websites r outdated please help thanks
I live in a rural area. None of the sites that were listed in the description would even list anything remotely in my area (NW Illinois). I have to travel at least a couple of hours for an SCA event if I want to go. Not sure how to approach this.
I really love these videos but how much would it cost all together for one person to go to the college of wizardry so I could have a round about on how much to save
I really want to go to the Bicolline LARP in Canada, but I’m an underage wizard and my parents would NEVER let me go all the way to Canada since we live in Florida. They want me to have the best childhood, but they aren’t going to spend half their money trying to get me to that point.
I might do a small larp with a couple friends at the local park, any ideas about this? We were thinking of doing a fantasy battle thing but idk none of us have done this before and we don't want to go to a big thing somewhere..
Goshhhh I wanna larp so bad. It just feels like the right way to go. I have an OC named Feyra that I'd really like to create a cosplay for but I'm hecking broke. A friend and I created an entire world and lore around 4 characters, two of which are mine. Feyra and Dax. They are both dragons. Dragons, in this universe, are thinking beings that can take the form of a human being around 5-7 years old. Dax is a full dragon. Feyra is a hybrid. Her mother was a dragon and her father was human. When it comes to hybrids, the only difference is that on some part of their body is evidence that they have dragon blood as well. For Feyra, I'm thinking of putting scales on her arms and stomach. Any type of dragon has the eyes of a dragon in human form so imma need to buy contacts or something. Because Feyra is a Hestia Dragon (Fire), her scale color scheme is a fading sunset. So reds, oranges, yellows, pinks, and purples. Idk about all of those but the point is she looks like a sunset. Why did I post this again?
Hey! This video is quite old and I kmow that, but Dystopia Rising allows people 16 and older to larp with them, just with parental signatures as a minor, and I would suggest having an adult at least the first game you attend, but it's an awesome experience!
A place near where I live has a kinda class on larping how to make weapons and character and costumes and stuff and I really wanna try it out if only recently been introduced to the idea of larping but it sounds amazing
For LARP weapons, you can usually find foam weapons modelled after popular franchise weapons on Wish. They will be not be amazing quality but they'll hold up well enough to a LARP and most will be $30 or less.
People call LARP childish cause well... it is. It is childish. And that is great. I found people who care the most about being as “adult” as possible kinda have no real friends. So larp is childish. But childish can be a good thing.
Agreed. Plus why would I give up on FUN just because I'm an adult? Like I do not get folks who are like, "I am an adult and therefore must eschew all things joyful outside of this prescribed adult box." that's no way to live. Besides, the funny thing about life is, none of us get out alive so we may as well enjoy it.
So... 1. I'm an underage larper 2. There's none in my local area 3. I'm worried people will make fun of me 4. I'm can't make costumes, design characters, act well or fight well... I'm pretty much just not talented 5. I don't think my parents would let me do it cos they wouldn't want to have to come idk 6. None of my friends would do it with me 7. I'm not rich enough to go to a different country for it or make a costume/weapons 8. I can't make my own cos I'm poor, not creative, underage and don't know anyone who'd want to do it 8. There's no thrift stores where I live and none of them would sell that kind of stuff anyway 9. I have to go to school full time and don't have enough time to do all of it 10. Social anxiety... Ummm.. I'm never gonna larps, am I?
Okay, my biggest obstacle is actually my parents. They think it is very inconvenient because they haven't looked into it and i also can't ask them to look into it cause they will think i am having a big mouth against them. Do you have any tips for those kinds of obstacles? Because i have found a larp that is in february and where i wanna go to with a group for my first larp since i also know people in the staff..
I have been larping for about a year now i run my own because i had now idea how to fine one it's been going prity well but I'm ready to try to fine a new group to see what happens
2-4/honestly those seem like the hardest to put t together. The 1st and 5th can be Easter to get over depending on the person of course but you also have anonymity .
Thanks for making this. I really want to get into larping and this was just the sort of thing I needed to hear, because I'm super nervous about entering a new community. I've picked up quite a few new hobbies recently and of all of them I think that larping may be the only one whose community isn't known for being really either judgemental or really elitist in some way. You mentioned being part of Dying Kingdoms, which would probably be what I'll be joining once I get around to it, so that's really cool. Would you be willing to answer a few questions that I'll inevitably begin to wonder about the more event-specific stuff? I'd really like to get to know people before going since that'd be considerably less nerve-racking, especially since I don't have any real-life friends who are particularly interested.
Lucy Roze I'm so glad you're thinking of joining the game! I'm totally down to answer questions, I can also direct you to the Dying Kingdoms Facebook group, where you can asks questions and get answers from staff and everything :)
I've actually already joined the Facebook group! I talked a little to Rachel from Pillars of Salt, and I guess she used to be on plot staff for DK, so that was super helpful. She even offered to help me with character creation. :'D To be honest I wanted to ask more about like.. idk, the social aspects of it? If I would be coming, I'd likely be coming alone, and over all that's what scares me the most. I'm kinda guessing that when people come they bring their own friends or are already friends with veteran players? I'd definitely need a lot of help starting off both in game and out and I'm not sure what to do about that if I don't know anyone yet.
Lucy Roze when I came to DK I barely knew anyone, I actually started out at a Table Top day which was much simpler socially! You're consigned to your table with 3-6 other players so it's a more intimate setting, which makes it a lot easier to make buddies. You don't have 79 players to worry about haha. Then we hang out a bit after. I'd recommend that. But people are generally really inclusive to new players, it just depends on what you put into it really!
Wuahaha! I went to my first larp on Saturday! It was a VtM game and it was really fun and I met lots of nice people! Nobo and Nicole were there and they were hella nice and they mentioned that y'all are friends, or at least know each other? When Nobo mentioned her character I got really excited bc I saw her in the meet the character video. ahaha oh dear I can already see this becoming an obsession help me
Haha omg I'm so glad! Nobo is AMAZING and you'll be seeing more of her in the future videos for sure! ALSO, please let us know if there's anything you want us to cover that can help more!! Thank you so much for watching!!
Hi! quick question for the LARP community, I am an underaged wizard but just slightly so I cant find any camps that have my age (High school age). I really want to LARP but I don't know where to go! Anyone got advice? Thanks :)
Honestly one of my biggest concerns is my anxiety and crap. I become pretty useless whenever I start panicking and facing someone running at me with a sword sounds exactly like the kind of thing that could make me freeze. Also, Yknow, the fact that I’m underaged and can’t get a parent to come along because my parents really don’t care for this stuff
