I highly recommend Leena Norms's video on creating a colorful capsule wardrobe if you want inspiration for how to work in colors, patterns, etc. into a smaller collection of clothes. Just because you're doing a capsule doesn't mean it has to be all neutrals!

She even developed a course called Wonder Wardrobe which takes you through all the steps of creating an interchangeable capsule yourself. I love her videos because they show you can make fun and interesting and personal wardrobes with just a few pieces. Great inspiration!

I love this. I have never used a digital wardrobe tracker. But I do maintain a google sheet of EVERY article of clothing and accessories I have to discourage my overconsumption of new (even newly thrifted) items. I’ve dreamt of doing it with pictures and may try it. As a textile scientist by eduction, I’m a super fabric snob without the accompanying budget. So I keep things forever. Even cheaply made things. Thanks so much for this new format!!

I’ve been using a similar app to track my clothing for the last two years. Using it, I’ve created two goals for the pieces in my wardrobe: -I must wear each piece at least 30 times -I must wear each piece to where it costs me a dollar or less per wear So if I buy something that cost $10, I aim to wear it at least 30 times. If I buy something that cost $100, I aim to wear it at least 100 times. Keeps me in check (especially with more expensive items), as I have to assess whether I think it’ll hold up for that number of wears.

coming to comment that it would probably take me about 5 hours to take pictures of everything, and this has definitely inspired me to try this out as well! I've only made a couple clothing items, but it has seriously made me think about all the work that goes into 1 item of clothing item. Also, I can say with certainty that black wouldn't be the color I have the most in my wardrobe (but I will have to put my money where my mouth is and actually do this to see 100% lol) Thank you for such an amazing video!

The easiest way I find to maintain a minimal wardrobe is to stick to a colour group. Mine is: black, white, gray, green, blue denim and beige/taupe. And I only sew from thrifted or deadstock fabric. Also, I hang my clothes to dry rather than use the dryer to prolong their life. But I still buy fast fashion ... trying to get away from that.

I think there's nothing wrong with purchasing from fast fashion if it's items you think you'll wear all the time and intentionally and thoughtfully purchase, as opposed to all the thousand dollar hauls we see on TikTok. I also usually thrift my clothes, but I have purchased from big brand stores/fast fashion if it's something I truly need and see myself using all the time. It's a slow crawl to being fully slow fashion, but as long as we're aware of our choices, intentions, and where we put our money, I think we're doing ok. :)

I agree with the comments about the usefulness of tracking your closet digitally. I have been using the Stylebook app for a little over a year now and it has been so insightful. I’ve reduced my total number of items based on what I didn’t wear, and I’ve come up with specific color and fabric parameters that I stick with. Before I purchase anything new, I go ahead and add a photo of it to my app and play around with how I will style it with my other items and make sure it’s not in a category that is already over-represented. It’s helped me become much more mindful about purchases and I also love seeing the data! 😊
@marlodevouge1650

I do this too! I have used Stylebook since about 6 years ago, then switched my data over to Closet when I moved to android a few years ago (I lost all the closet data and cost-per-wear stats but I edited that and kept going). In stores or for online shopping I will pull up what items I already have in the app that is similar, and if I don't have anything I will see if I can make 3-5 outfits with the item before I buy it - I have saved myself from a lot of unnecessary purchases this way. Also, I just love seeing the cost per wear of an item go down

It's really nice being able to see what items I wear the most and other stats (although I could probably do without seeing the total amount I've spent on my closet though lol) Like you said, it's also great for playing around with styling potential new purchases before you hit buy. I have a rule that if I can't make at least 5 outfits with a new piece, I don't buy it (save for occasion wear) and it's saved me so much money.

I've moved often so I've learnt to keep my wardrobe very small, and I'm an artist who loves maximalist stuff and doesn't wear much neutral colours 😂 One of the tips I learnt is to not buy too many clothes that you can only wear in certain seasons. Instead of buying wool trousers, opt for jeans that you can wear in spring and autumn as is, and layer leggings underneath in winter. You can wear those leggings for yoga classes, jogging or lounging at home too. I used to buy tights/stockings for layering but I switched to cotton leggings because they don't give you static shocks and you also don't have to worry about poking holes in them. Also esp if you are lazy don't buy clothes that take more effort to maintain, because you'd likely wear them less often. I look out for if they are so prone to wrinkling or pilling, makes your skin itchy, cause holes while washing or take forever to dry (thick hoodies!).

I love Acloset! I've been using it a little over a year now, consistently tracking what I wear every time I get dressed. My favorite metric is cost per wear, it's kind of thrilling to see that number go down over time. It also helps when I'm in a store debating whether to buy an article of clothing, I can scroll through my closet and really think about the potential outfits I can create. If I'm not coming up with ideas, it's probably not worth it to buy that thing.

Thrifting has been the most accessible thing for me and it makes me feel so much better about not being able to do everything.

Alao, I am just gonna point out that even thrifting requires privilege. It is very time consuming to thrift everything, especially if you are going the mindful route and not just looking for stuff, but searching for specific items. If you are poor and have no time but want to look presentable, fast fashipn is literally your only choice.
@haveasmiletoday2814
@haveasmiletoday2814 Год назад
@Tina Schneider (I edited this because I dislike how I wrote this at first lol) I kind of disagree on the thrifting take cuz In most cases, 'privilege' makes everything easier. Even fast fashion since if you have the money you can just buy more fast fashion instead working on buying higher end pieces. Especially since poor people have been thrifting for ages, the statement " _requiring_ privilege" rubs me the wrong way. So this comment bothers me a little because it ignores a lot of nuances. While it is time consuming to thrift everything, People with a lot of privilege to thrift aren't spending all their hours in a thrift store or digging at the goodwill bins they'll either buy online or buy new. I think the only thing anyone can do in the present age is buy less. Because whether your thrifting, sewing, buying fast fashion, buying ethical brands or buying designer were all being told to get more clothes than we actually need. That's the main issue here I think. I do agree that if a poor person needs clothes immediately fast fashion is usually the only route they can go (hence the statement 'being poor costs more'). But too many people are buying fast fashion for frequently for reasons other than that.

I don't think having a colorful wardrobe is necessarily inefficient though. What I do mostly is pair a colorful top with a more neutral bottom or vice versa, if you have a good balance of colorful and neutral items it's a pretty good schema to follow imo. I could never stick to neutral tones for the sake of simplicity bc I love dressing colourful too much but imo if you stick to "simple" outfits (90% of my outfits are colorful top + jeans / black pants and the other 10% is the couple colorful pants i have + black/white tops) you can have a colorful wardrobe without too much hassle

I use a 3 capsules; warm, comfy and cold. After figuring out how often I wanted/needed to wash my clothes they each have something like 5 bottoms and 15 tops (as my guideline). I distributed my existing items into these 3 capsules, and put the rest in totes. Now I change between the capsules when the seasons change, and supplement from the totes as needed. I haven't thought a lot about colour coordinating but worried more about fit and temperature. I only worry about colour when buying new items, which is something I rarely do. I love this concept, and that it's based on what I already had. Each season it feels like I get a new wardrobe of items I love, and it's all weather appropriate. Been using this concept for a couple of years now and it really works for me.

Yeah I definitely think that for most places in the world you need a seasonal divide for capsule wardrobes. If it gets to 30+ degrees c and and then below 0 in your country you really can't wear the same clothing all year round. A lot of capsule advice seems to ignore the basic realities of the weather.

I think one thing that almost EVERYONE i know misses is the importance of materials. Soooooo many of them have winter clothing like sweaters, knits, hats, scarves etc that are...polyester or acrylic!! And then complain about being cold. MAke sure you pick materials that keep you warm, hot tip is wool! And not all wool is itchy, merino and cashmere is very skin-friendly and soft. And on the other hand they complain about being sweaty during the summer, also while wearing synthetic. Just nooo.... And you can get plenty of cashmere and other expensive materials second hand for a fraction of the retail price.

though i definitely agree that buying slow fashion comes with privilige, i do think that it's a little odd how people take that statement and use it to justify their fast fashion purchases. being reliant on fast fashion doesn't make it okay to buy a new wardrobe whenever a new trend drops. this supposed 'right' to look cute is not more important than the lives of garment workers. it's an excuse i see used a lot unfortunately.

I started doing this during COVID with the StyleBook App (very similar) and found out a lot of what you mentioned… mostly, if I felt too lazy to add a top to the app, it probably wasn’t worth keeping. After a year, I was able to do a HUGE purge of the things I never wore, and I also realized that there were a lot of things I wore only once a year. Why do we have so much clothing that we can only wear it once a year?!?! My final step to this was to recognize the items I wore the absolute most (black jeans, Chelsea boots, heavy coat) and start investing in more durable items in those categories. It has helped me justify when to splurge and when to hold off on a piece I consider buying!

My least favorite part of this conversation is that everyone should be thrifting. That’s so not possible for so many people (especially +size/mid size), I’ve learned that while I can only afford fast fashion on my limited budget & no sewing skills. I still have H&M, Forever 21 and even Charlotte Russe items that’s I’ve had since 2010 or 2011. I don’t have a lot of turnover in my items. Totally agree @quiteinfamous - I think we have swung really far to the other side of the argument and missed quite a few points a long the way (not referring to Wendy's video here, more to what I perceive as the general conversation about sustainability and fashion). Yes these companies do promote overconsumption and have unethical practices - but buying from them from time to time and wearing the pieces for a long time can still be part of a more sustainable practice, and we shouldn't demonise people who shop there, when we have no idea of their budget or other constraints!

@@ellideryckman5862 Totally agree with all you're saying. In an ideal world, we'd all be thrifting for new stuff for our wardrobe. But that is not always possible (access to thrift stores, sizing, aesthetic etc.) My strategy now is if I want something new to try and look in charity shops first and if buying new, ideally a sustainable brand. I have failed several times with this stepwise system, often skipping to straight to buying new but at the same time I have things from my wardrobe that are 5+ years old that I thrifted, so I know it's not an extreme adjustment for me. It is kinda hard when you see someone rock an outfit. I'm learning to admire stuff from afar and leave it there lol. I think the key to to buying fast fashion, if that is the best option for you is getting something you know you'll use for long and I personally try and get better quality amongst the fast fashion haha, as well as the sustainability of materials (I tend to gravitate towards natural fabrics but understand synthetics are key for things like raincoats and also that blends can prolong garment longevity). Anyways, sorry for the essay It was just nice to see someone put my opinion on this to paper :)

Have you considered getting a color analysis to find out which season you are and thus which colors suit you best? I had a session with House of Colour this year and it has changed my perspective on my wardrobe completely. I love color and my wardrobe is colorful but also cohesive because it is primarily from one season: autumn. I also have the freedom now to ignore black and white clothing when I shop because I know it doesn't suit me. Rather, my colors are in the realm of creams, browns, and olive greens. I think this knowledge would help you keep color and cohesion in your wardrobe.

Another advice I would give anyone trying to have a smaller wardrobe is to find a color palette that works for you. It doesn't have to be neutral! Yes find the neutral base if you want but also find the colors that flatter you and those you love the most. Most people will instinctively gravitate towards their best colors. Find if you prefer saturated or muted colors, dark or light, what temperature, cools or warms. Also find what prints you love is it gingham is it plaid? Do you love flower prints do you like stripes? What about retro prints? That way you can make a capsule wardrobe that's not boring and that it's for YOU, not for the minimalist youtuber you watched the other day. Also sort pieces by season and store the ones you're not going to wear those months. You can do a basic wardrobe with your all-year essentials and basics, and 2 smaller capsules for cold weather and for warm weather (I just do warm and cold weather, but you can do 4 seasons if your locations needs it). For example store away all your spring summer items until it's hot again. And store away any item you feel you've grown bored with. It'll get you more excited to wear the items again each time you bring them back out. It's like shopping your own wardrobe. (This especially works if you have adhd haha because you'll forget you have them and it's such a nice surprise when you bring them out.)

I personally don't like a capsule wardrobes that is exclusively neutrals (black, white, grey, beige, and browns). My aesthetic is a pretty earthy, hippy vibe, but definitely still colourful. I have some darker yellow, forest greens, muted plum purple, blue denim, and muted pinks, among some staple neutrals (oatmeal, black, khaki). I like how they all vibe well together and it makes it super easy to reach for whatever without much thought or effort. I also make sure that my clothes have a focus of comfort / practicality, as I have learned that these are the only items that actually get worn (since I am mostly housebound with chronic illness, my outfits are very pyjama couture lol).

I have tried doing a capsule wardrobe in the past and I've realized it's just not for me BUT I'm really curious to see what you learn from this process and how you boil down your style! I love having lots of fun pieces that I can wear for different seasons that aren't coherent. I just want to say that you can have a big wardrobe and still acquire that sustainably or you can have a small wardrobe that you acquire sustainably. If you're struggling to choose what to wear everyday then a first step is to figure out a "uniform" and have a few sets of whatever you wear on a day to day basis. What you have other than that just depends on how much variety you like in your wardrobe.

Thank you so much for starting this conversation!! This is so important, and you did put some very reasonable thoughts I've been in crisis with my wardrobe recently, and its hard to deal with the impulse of buying lots of new things without a good reflection. I don't think i'm ready to face a capsule wardrobe yet, but i'll definitely set as a new year resolution to buy less and better, and thrift more.

I really like this video! I think I'm going to share it with my sister; we were just talking about building/curating a wardrobe and finding your typical styles. I think a big barrier aside from cost lol is the sizing - you did a few tailoring videos before with the perfect tank top and perfect shorts stuff, it would be really cool if maybe you made a series exploring tailoring thrifted clothes from bigger sizes to fit well or something like that? It's something I've been thinking about but I really don't know how to construct or tailor clothes haha

Earlier this year I entered all of my clothing into Smart Closet and then moved it to Stylebook. It probably took me close to 5 hours spread over multiple days to take all the pictures, enter in colors, sizing, fit notes, etc, so I feel the pain. I love Stylebook (though there was a 1 time app purchase), it provides me with data about my closet and the clothing I choose to keep coming back to. It streamlines my daily getting ready routine and makes packing lists so much easier. Couldn't recommend getting a closet app enough, it makes me so happy to see someone else using one! Most of my closet is second hand, but now when thrifting I always take a good look at what I might purchase and think "how long will this take me to enter and is that worth my time."

Also think about the cpw (cost per wear): A dress for 20 but you only wear it once or one for 100 but wear it at least six times (16,67 cpw), already a better deal.

Cheap stuff can last years if you take care of your clothes and mend when needed. A 20 dollar skirt has lasted me a decade and going. Sure, the type of fabric and the way something is made impacts the garment’s longevity. But for certain things, if you take care of it, you can wear it for many years

I have been on the edge of making a capsule wardrobe for about 3 years but I LOOOVVVEEE colours and patterns so I dunno how it’ll work. Obviously I’ll start with my current wardrobe, since have more or less stopped buying fast fashion and make my own clothes, so maybe this app will help me to decipher what else I can sell (already sell on Vinted) to really get the most wear out of my wardrobe and then I can pin point any items that I feel I can add, by making them myself 👍🏾 thanks for the inspo as usual Wendy, also I have a blanket that I got from the guys that delivered our fridge 😂 loved the fabric they used to protect the floor so they gave me a brand new unused one 😂 want to make it into a coat

You have the option to train the recommendation for outfits. You can tell it which items shouldn't get recommended together for example because of the bulkyness, shape or fabrics. This way it gets a lot better at recommending outfits.

I love this video! I had a professional colour analysis done to help me pick my wardrobe colours because I know from experience I end up buying pieces which don't "go" together. I have a wardrobe colour palette now, and I took out about 20 or 30 old pieces which really weren't the right colours. I'm now slowly finding and filling the gaps as I live in my new stream-lined wardrobe! The best advice for transitioning to a capsule wardrobe I've heard is to only tackle the current season of clothing. When the season changes you'll naturally see if you have too many or not enough of X and can act accordingly.

I loved all of this! I think on some level people are just exhausted in general. When we were bored, we bought and made all of these things, but not there's so much turmoil globally and inflation is hurting everyone. It's easy to look at our possessions as a thing that we can positively influence and control. For myself I have been on a minimalism path for a couple years, not pursuing to live in an empty space, but to get more joy out of the things I possess. Once I started, I certainly knew I was not stopping. The closet is actually one of the things I struggle with the most. As I have gotten older and I am more careful I have been having the thought "I could throw away everything except my sentimental tshirts and my work dresses and I would be happy." Admittedly I don't intend to be *that* overzealous, but it was really illuminating for me. I've started a for-sale and a repair pile, and I am really looking forward to decluttering in a way nothing hopefully ends up on a landfill.

This year I started to learn how to sew, so I can alter my own clothes. This has helped me to really understand how difficult it is to sew a piece of clothing and even understand that some fast fashion prices don't make any sense (so they must be compromising quality somewhere). A meter of fabric cost as much as a fast-fashion sweater! Love that there's a lot of people learning how to love clothes and hope this fast-fashion trend will end soon

My favorite thing that I have been doing since I started sewing at thirteen is … UTILIZING HAND ME DOWNS the amount of cute but maybe “out of style” clothes from friends that I have been able to turn into staple pieces is truly mind blowing. For example, my friend thrifted (!!!) a mini turtleneck dress but noticed there was a tiny hole in the skirt so she gave it to me and I just lettuce hemmed it into a top and it is my go to staple turtleneck that I wouldn’t bat an eye at investing $$$ in. And the skirt section turned into ribbed knit socks :)

I add colour to my wardrobe mostly with dresses, a sleeved dress and black tights is an easy work outfit for me and they don't really need to match anything else. My home clothes are mostly muted colours, pastels, denim and grey. It seems counterintuitive but when I find something I like, I often buy/make more than one. I have 3 dresses all the same pattern that I made in different colours which I wear almost every week. Light enough for summer but with 3/4 sleeves so with a vest and heavier tights they also work for winter (it helps that the UK only really has a temp range of about 30 degrees (c) across the year). I have also embraced the fact that comfort is the most important factor for me when choosing clothes, so I stick to stretchy knit fabrics and avoid overly tailored patterns.

I too felt like I had to buy new clothes to try a capsule wardrobe, but you probably already own everything you’d want for a capsule wardrobe that’s perfect for you anyway. If you don’t wear *insert capsule wardrobe must have* and already have it in your closet, there’s no reason to buy it to start! I saw a good video that suggested putting everything you own in a pile/box/closet/somewhere other than your usual clothing storage and then for the next couple weeks, see what you actually wear out of it. You probably have a few favorites that already work well with each other and boom! There’s your capsule wardrobe.

I ALWAYS have a favorite pair of jeans a favorite sweater etc... That I will choose over and over. At the same time I tried the other app, I did create a color scheme for my closet and I’ve stuck with it. Makes pairing different items together much easier and the laundry much easier to do, too. It also prevented me from making unnecessary purchases if the item I liked wasn’t available within my scheme colors.
