I want to be a blues Harmonica player. That's non negotiable, I lost all purpose in life and was going to take the easy way out till I started listening to the Blues and appreciating the groove and boogie. Now I feel life is worth living. If music can do that man I feel I can do anything

This video nearly made me cry...several times...because you described me again and again. Knowing there are people in this world who "get me" is why being a Blues Harmonica Player isn't a matter of want; it's an absolute necessity! As for your last question within it's medical framework, I can think of only one better way to die than collapsing on stage right after pouring my heart out onto it.

Thank you Adam! You are my hero! In Serbia if you want to be blues harmonica player it can be only your hobby and you have to work if you want to support your family. Because of that I play my harmonica only in front of my computer in my room. My close friends didn't know that I play harmonica for a little bit and when someone of my friends, see my video on RU-vid they thought that this is only someone who looks like me. :-) And for the end, you and Jason Ricci are my only teachers but I am not such a good student. :-) I wish you good health and happiness in the future.

Funny that today you say "don't", "run away" from wanting to be a harmonica player, because you're precisely one of the main reasons why I'm now spending hours every day with that thing in my face ! Thanks for everything, hope you'll keep going a long - very long time sir. And please come to Paris !

I'm not looking to be a harmonica player I'm just getting a few to daily carry to play when the time calls for it. Just watching because I find the world of harmonics interesting.

Went to a Jon Gindick Jam Camp with my wife. We woke up one morning and she said "I can't believe I slept with the harmonica player!". I loved it! PS, you were the first RU-vid harmonica player I hooked up with. I hear you. Thanks

I'm not one inclined to comment, in fact this may be the first, anyway, this video, and the previous one you made with the same theme has me thinking....I think the bottom line is anything we do, if we really want to be good at it, takes serious work. There are more than one path that leads to the goal of being a "blues harmonica player", but they ALL require serous effort, and being honest with yourself. I never had a teacher, but I wore out some tapes, and harps. I think the biggest requirement needed is to have the feeling or grove inside you, which for me I think was partially genetic and came from A LOT of just listening to all kinds of blues. Then practicing to the point where I could express myself. But first I had to become fluent in the language of the blues. Hopefully, that makes sense. Being a performer came by just becoming friends with other musicians who asked me to play. A step I never would have taken unless I felt I had some ability to bring something to the table.
@gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726
+Philip Odell : "fluent in the language of the blues" is exactly right. The harp is one way to speak that language, but your feet and voice, including percussive vocalizations, are also key. Stay tuned for another video in that direction later this week.

Change your name to Frank and sell life insurance. Am 66 years old, picked up a Harmonica in the key of C, couple of months ago and it feels as if I have found my best friend. There is so much great talent on RU-vid and so many willing teachers, it's incredible how well you have described the brotherhood or camaraderie, respect and admiration you feel for one another. I have watched your videos and your sarcasm only enhances and compliments your sound. Am very grateful for what you do; not everyone is meant to have monet though we are all meant to be rich. Your wealth is beyond belief. Yeah, keep playing, don't sell insurance

I just have to say I am learning. I want what you have, even if it is just on a small scale. Just in the little town I live in, in Georgia. Why because I love music, never dreamed I could play a thing until I picked up the harmonica. I still have a ton to learn, but I am on my journey to be a harmonica player and it is fun. Thanks Adam

A lot of this hit home. I went through most of this but only as a blues guitarist rather than harp player. I haven't had the heart attack yet but often feel like at 46 it may come but who knows? We love the music and live the life. Your videos are great. I try to learn harp but it's not my main instrument, although I love listening to the Chicago greats . 🎶🎵

Kerouac was an important inspiration to me, but since you've offered a brief reading list, I'll suggest a handful of other books you might check out. Two by David Deida: "The Way of the Superior Man" and "Naked Buddhism: 39 Ways to Free Your Heart and Awaken to Now"; Robert Bly, "Iron John"; Clarissa Pinkola Estes, "Women Who Run With the Wolves"; Pema Chodron, "When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times."

Having said all this I also realize that I have also gleaned a lot of information off the internet, including many of your videos. I never would have known about overblows if I hadn't heard of it on the Internet. But I had to work for months to get more than a squeak out of the harp. I never would have known anything about making modifications to a harp to make it more playable, but I had to take the harps apart and figure it all out for myself, and make my own tools. Other things I discovered on my own out of necessity, like discovering how I could better compete with a heavily electric guitar driven band by using various pedals, including a cry baby wah wah. Bottom line, gotta be willing to put out the effort, as any other talent, and take some risks if you want to be a blues harmonica player.

Hello Adam, I'm sorry for pestering with another question but, I would like to know if anyone can learn to draw and blow bend on a diatonic harmonica or is it a skill that some people can learn and others can't?
@gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726
I think that anybody can learn. Some people figure it out on their own, as I did. Others need a teacher. But you can do it.
@laurencemann4952

I really enjoyed this video Adam but, when you said, 'find yourself a teacher' did you mean at class level or a private tutor?
@Modernbluesharmonica
@Modernbluesharmonica 8 лет назад
Either one. A private teacher, if you find the right one, can be great, but classes have their own virtues: you meet other people who share your passion; you hear a range of sounds and skill-levels; and you can almost always find a moment after the class to chat briefly with the teacher and address your own concerns.

Hi Gus, I love your presentation and attitude. I've been a bass player for as long as you've been a harp player so a lot of what you warn of I've been through, minus the ticker time bomb. I bought my first harp a little over a week ago, a Special 20 in A and my second arrived yesterday it's a Seydel Session Steel in C. I thought I'd try a couple of different brands to see which I prefer and I must admit the 20 is easier to bend and be expressive but the Session sounds and feels nicer. My question is did you come to the Marine Band through trial of brands or was it preference from the start and have you used the new Special 20 'Progressive'.
@gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726
I started on the Marine Band in 1975, but in the early 1980s I began to try a range of other makes and models, including the Golden Melody, the Special 20, Lee Oskar, etc. I just didn't like the plastic combs. So I went back to the MB, and I've stayed there. I did have a Big River in D-flat for a while and that was okay. I haven't tried the new harp you mention. I like the MB Deluxe and the Crossover, although the Crossover is a little bright on the high harps.

It wasn't playing the harmonica playing that almost killed you, it was your absolutely ridiculous smoking habit. To be honest, I don't even know how you could play at all smoking like that. It was likely ONLY because you played the harmonica that you weren't dead sooner. By playing, you are exercising your lungs and heart, which will strengthen them, not deteriorate them. Your playing was doing nothing more than buying you time, and it likely saved your life.
