Hello! We wanted to thank you all for taking the time to watch this video and we appreciate all the kind & encouraging feedback we’ve gotten. We also love hearing about your stories as well! Some of you have been upset with the fact we couldn’t give you an answer on how much we spent. I can assure you, we are not purposefully withholding a price from you all. If we knew, we would let you know! During this time, my husband had multiple projects going on that didn’t have anything to do with our build. He also had 2 businesses to operate. During this time building materials became so volatile that we were faced with halting this project or just “get it done”. We obviously chose to go forward and get it done. During this time we pulled money from our business accounts and personal accounts, as well as financing too. So one could maybe see when there is a lot going on in life sometimes it’s easier (maybe not wise) to just keep moving forward and get it done. We still have not sat down and figured out how much this costed us. It’s an ever revolving door of expenses. We have TONS of projects to complete. Should we sit down and see how much we’re into this? Probably! But we move fast and it works for us. This is our forever home so we don’t look at it as an “investment” like our other ventures. Hopefully everyone can understand! Moving forward we are definitely going to be taking a tally on how much projects cost us so we can share with you!!! Thank you again for the people who have been kind and we appreciate all of your support!

Hi. I know that water problems will make your foundation crack and move if you don't get that water out from around the house. Look up French drains, you are going to need them around the parameter of the barn. Then where all that water is in your field will need what's called a swale. Or drainage ditch to move the water away from the barn as well. Please don't neglect this as it can undermine your whole foundation. Good luck, great start there. God bless you and your family.

With anyone else considering spray foam insulation for their home, it works great to seal up a house, but man is it a major fire hazard. Once that stuff ignites, it spreads so fast. It's amazing that the building code has not removed this type of foam.

I thought I was banking with 150k in the bank, about to buy land and looking for options to build a barndo, but I need, build a temporary barndo and I don't even know how much it costs money LOL. I read one article that said top range was about $127 a square foot, then I just got floored with another website that set turn-key "starts" at about $300 square foot, which is well above what it would cost for a typical stick-built home. So I'm back to having no clue if this is even going to be affordable or not. Everyone says its cheaper but I still don't know.

OK it’s been two years since you uploaded this video. If you had it all to do again, would you do it? I’m asking because we’re getting ready to build a barndo on our property as we speak. We are just in the beginning stages of speaking to a architect to do our plans.
@brownsfamilyhomestead
@brownsfamilyhomestead 6 месяцев назад
I’ll make a video on this very soon! Simple answer: yes we would do it again. Regarding your first comment: it was careless, we know lol. We never claimed to give everyone all of our financial details and we don’t feel like people are entitled to even know that information. Most people aren’t putting their lives on the internet having people demanding for their itemized building list on how much they spent on something. Talking about the financial aspect of this is pointless because we were building during the most fluctuating year for this kind of stuff. Prices were changing DAILY on building materials. Also, it completely depends on where you are building; city and state. Where we build might be pennies compared to where you would build. People think we are being sneaky about this and we aren’t lol. All I know is, we were a family of five with a newborn living in a tiny cabin desperately trying to build it fast so we could move. The desperation outweighed the budget. Obviously, if we could rewind we would’ve wrote it all down. I will make a video explaining more on your question. Happy to help in the ways we can. 😊

Thanks a lot for this review! Are the ceiling cracks definitely related to the pitch/steepness of the roof? This is a problem I’ve been wondering about with barndo’s in general. Thanks again!

Building a Barndominium and later a separate home is the same thing I'm looking to do (if I can talk my wife into it), but one thing I'm looking at doing different is to use steel frame construction instead of wood. Did you ever consider using steel instead of wood construction?

Do you get creaks and squeaks from the metal expanding and contracting? I also see that you sent with wood structure instead of metal posts and c-purling's. Would you explain the reason behind why you did that?
@brownsfamilyhomestead
@brownsfamilyhomestead 2 года назад
No we do not get creaks! And cost was a big reason and the builder we went with specializes in post-frame construction. Also, the purlings are still exposed because we are planning on doing metal inside (shop area) but are waiting it out because of the high prices right now.

Did you contract out the individual parts? I read in another comment that you didn’t have plans/blueprints. I haven’t checked other videos yet, but if you didn’t cover that already, I think that would be a great video topic. I appreciate that you shared that you didn’t have numbers in the beginning. Did you ever get around to a ballpark figure ie how much you got from lenders and the home sale and roughly what was left over? Someone posted about these and I needed to look it up, this could be an idea for us, we are in the process of buying land and we’re not going to be able to build a house on it for a bit but this could work!

If a plumbing leak/issue is under the slab they would cut a hole in the slab to make the repairs. Then patch the foundation after any repairs were made.

The only way to prevent cracks in the drywall seams is to first coat all the joints with real Durabond. I say real Durabond (drys brownish in color) because too many people (including the people in sells) refers to the easysand as Durabond. I don't know why they think easysand is Durabond - IT IS NOT! Not many contractors use Durabond because it does take more time to use. But it dries hard, really hard. And it does not sand - though anyone skilled in taping would not need to sand the first coat. It is great stuff and it does not crack like all the other joint compound weather it is easysand or the premix compound that goes much faster. The first coat should always be done with Durabond - which does not shrink either. then can be top coated with whatever. That is the only way, the only way to not have your seems crack.
