@@marynfrankkoczan6951 I am trying to get creative but also am in need of some inspiration. I can’t believe I wasn’t making these sooner! They’re so quick to make and I always save fabric scraps from other stuff so I have most of what I need. Also, I’m learning to crochet so I think I will make some fidget cuffs/muffs as well. Please show us more of your work and ideas. I have braided pieces of fabric and put beads on safety pins (beads go up and down) that I then string onto braided rope (safety pins slide along it back and forth).
@@candicefrost4561 Hi! The two video (So You Want to Make a Fidget Mat #1 & #2) pretty much cover all the ideas I found by brainstorming with other sewists and watching videos. The exception is an amazing idea a friend had for her own mom. She took one of her mom's purses, cut the sides off and sewed various things onto the lining. When it's unsnapped, it opens flat so she can engage with all the cool things my friend sewed in. In addition to some of the usual elements we add to fidget mats, she punched a hole in the corner of a used-up gift card, attached it to a length of cord and tucked it into a pocket on the outside of the purse. She also found some old house and car keys that she attached to some elastic. Those were tucked into a zipper pouch on the inside of the purse. Her mom carried her purse for months! The possibilities are endless! I've made a couple of muffs - one crocheted and one of fleece. It's fun to hide some things on the inside to keep fingers busy and hands warm! I would caution using safety pins unless you can solder them shut. My dad was able to take almost anything apart (including his walker and a TV tray) without using any tools! (Most nursing home residents have a lot of time on their hands!) One of our rules is to avoid using anything that could be taken apart or undone - like safety pins. We also are careful to make sure the lengths of ribbon, shoe laces, cord and elastic are too short to present a strangulation risk. Thank you for making fidget mats. Hi Sandy, Sorry it's taken so long for me to reply. I'm glad you found the video helpful and I hope your Mom is enjoying it. I have made dozens of mats for anonymous nursing home residents, but I've made a couple for family members too. It's always a special feeling that goes into those mats.
This is a great video! Lots of wonderful ideas. I'm in the process of making a fidget mat for my brother who has had a serious stroke eventually resulting in dementia. Thanks for this information!
I imagine It’s nice to have something that won’t frustrate someone if they can’t “do it right” or “finish it” while still letting you engage your fine motor skills. You can’t really move buttons around in a pouch “wrong” so hopefully this is something that encourages him in between the difficulty of getting back to more difficult tasks. All the best!
Are there any materials it would be bad to use that could pose a hazard to patients that have pica (wanting to eat things that aren’t food)? I’m sewing everything down securely but that’s always in the back of my mind...
