"I was right here the whole time and none of you could see me. Nobody could see me." That line gets to me every single time because I've felt that pain so many times.
Such a well written show. Also, each child is supposed to represent a different stage of grief: Steve is Denial. Shirley is Anger. Theo is Bargaining. Luke is Depression. And Nell is Acceptance.
Personally, I think Shirley and Theo are switched, where Shirley is Bargaining and Theo is Anger. Mike Flanagan didn't intentionally write the characters to represent each stage - that was a fan theory. Turns out he really liked it though when he heard it :) But that means it was never written to go in birth order and Theo seems a lot more pissed off (Steve calls her a closed fist with hair, lol) and Shirley preparing Nell's body was her bargaining with her guilt over not being there for her. So that's why I think they're switched.
In episode 6 the first edit doesn’t happen for 17 minutes and it was actually when the chandelier fell. There are only 4 cuts in the whole episode and it took them 3 months to choreograph. There’s a behind the scenes video about it on RU-vid that’s fantastic
there are five long segments (with four cuts between), but then after the casket falls, the tension built by the long takes is broken and the episode reverts to more standard editing with more frequent cuts. but it's fair to say there are only four cuts in close to 60 minutes, which is an amazing accomplishment. especially given the complexity of some of the shots and what the high emotion required of the actors. the behind the scenes featurette on this episode the is good and the director's commentary on the dvd is great.
Was just getting ready to say that here in the comments. The way the kids had to run out of site and the adults had to quickly take their places when Hugh walks in and sees his kids as little children was so damn impressive along with the awesome camera work and long, long unedited shots. Flanagans' shows and writing are amazing and I love that he uses the same cast for all his shows with the occasional newcomers as well. Brilliant 👏🏼 👏🏼 ❤
In the episode 1 when Steve hanging out with Luke in the tree house, Steve looked at one of Luke's drawing of someone (a girl) wearing pink dress with her mouth opened (like screaming), and said "Luke, where do you get these ideas for these drawings?". And Luke replied with "I don't know" gesture. It turns out Luke may have been looking into the future. That drawing is actually adult Nell. It's a twin thing.
Episode 6 is a masterpiece. I know that Bly Manor is the natural progression for your next Flanagan watch but; Midnight Mass is one of the best things I’ve ever watched and I think you’ll really enjoy it (when and if you get there!)
I really think that this bent neck lady episode was my favourite of the series. Nelly was such an amazing actress. I love her character. I hated to see her go. She was talented and beautiful inside and out
I don't know if someone already commented this: but the reason she throws her pills away is because it is implied that because they are connected through their twin bond, when she gets into her medication that triggers or at least influences his use. So she throws it away to help him stop.
@@BrightStick14 I don’t recall either of them being able to see the future. Theo can touch things and see the real past of an object or event. I don’t remember Liv showing any power at all. She just had brainstorming migraines. I know she talked to Theo about it running in her family, but I don’t recall her using that power.
@@eddietucker7005 in ep3 when Theo touches Liv, Theo saw what Liv looked like when she dies (which happens in the future). And in ep9 (which he’s already seen since it’s on Patreon) Liv sees Nellie and Luke dead (Nellie has her mouth wired shut because that’s what happens when you get worked on by a mortician. Liv and Nellie see the same Luke - laying down, needle in his arm, foaming at the mouth).
Yes! The beginning of episode 6 started with a 17 minute long single shot. There's a really cool behind the scenes feature that shows how they did it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gkhz2W2Gk4g.html
Consider how little of each video/episode you actually get on RU-vid, about 12 mins of each. His recordings of the episodes on patreon are always an hour long. He will pause and talk about things about the show for minutes at a time and clearly loved it. Please be more considerate in the future friend.
