Alcohol is normalised in society, despite being an addictive harmful drug. Its the only drug we have to justify NOT taking! There is a movement towards mindful drinking and choosing sobriety and its incredibly liberating to be free of the 'wine o clock' culture. Many of us are 'grey area drinkers' who would benefit from taking a break from the booze to access a whole array of positive benefits. Lets change the conversation around alcohol! " Janey Lee Grace is an Amazon No 1 Best-selling author, commentator, and co-presenter on the UK’s biggest radio show, BBC Radio 2’s Steve Wright in the Afternoon. She runs the popular recommendations blog - imperfectlynatural.com.
Janey has written five books on Holistic living including the number One Amazon best seller Imperfectly Natural Woman and currently writes columns for many magazines, and runs training workshops and consultations on Media Breakthrough for holistic businesses and solopreneurs. She hosts the annual Janey Loves Platinum Awards to recognise the best in natural and organic products and services with categories for practitioners and wellbeing authors. After ditching the booze Janey has launched a podcast ‘Alcohol Free Life’ focusing on sober self-care." This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I started drinking since my teenage, got addicted to alcohol. Spent my whole life fighting alcohol addiction. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Alcohol addiction actually destroyed my life. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

Hey mates! Can you help with the source? I suffer severe anxiety, panic and depression and I usually take prescription medicine, but they don't always help. Where can I find those psilocybin mushrooms? I'm really interested in treating my mental health without Rxs. I live in Australia don't know much about these. I'm so glad they helped you. I can't wait to get them too. Really need a reliable source 🙏

YES very sure of Dr.alishrooms. I have the same experience with anxiety, depression, BPD and addiction and Mushrooms definitely made a huge huge difference to why am clean today.

Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Never addictive. Thank you for sharing this point!

Yes, but in my experience as someone with 1 year of sobriety, I don’t feel like I “gave up” anything. I simply stopped doing something that I realized was only making me unhappy - in other words, I came to see there were ultimately no positives to drinking.

17 days without a drink. Quit for 1 year in 2007, 1 year in 2009 and 1 year in 2017. Went back every time fooling myself into thinking I could moderate and control my drinking. Starts out ok and builds and builds over time until drinking to excess twice a week. Sick of it. I really feel like I’m done. I’m 42. I really don’t want to wake up at 52 regretting another 10 years wasted on hangovers and missed opportunities due to this horrific poison.

28 days sober of alcohol here! 30 years old, and decided to give it up for life! Now I say I’m not an abuser of alcohol, but going a week or so and then having two bottles of wine and half a bottle of gin in one sitting, throwing up all over your bedroom, waking up the next day single as you’ve dumped your girlfriend by text, Lying to her that you cheated when in fact you didn’t, and you have no recollection of doing this! That was the moment I decided I’ve had enough. I’m not the person I was when drunk, I never will that “person” again! Stay strong everyone reading this.

Some of it has been wonderful and some has been....not so much wonderful. Isn't that life? Just because you don't drink today isn't a commitment to not drink next week.....or tomorrow . Find a way of sobriety that works for you. Relapse does not have to be a part of your story. But if you are HERE, maybe check out a way or two of sobriety. You can always drink later.

I had been listening to the "grey area" Ted talk in the background whilst "working". Obviously it was on autoplay and suddenly this voice came on and I thought "I know that voice" and I tried to conjure the face of a famous actor/TV presenter, but my "grey area" fuddled brain wouldn't play ball. So I gave in and looked at the video details. OMG!! Janey Lee Grace of Steve Wright in the Afternoon on Radio 2 fame! Because of Lockdown, I rarely drive any more and so haven't listened to the radio in years. But her voice is obviously still ingrained in my sub conscious. It feels so reassuring to hear that someone as "successful" as JLG was behaving the same as me. Again it goes to her point that from the outside people think we're functioning. Only we know the truth on the inside. I do dry January every year and never have any problem completing it (I even go beyond to the 1st Saturday in February). But I always have the reward of being able to drink in February (especially as that's when the 6 Nations starts and I always go to the pub with mates to watch it). I always say to myself that I'll be a social drinker and won't drink at home on my own . . . .but then the inevitable happens and within a few days, I'm drinking every night again. The thing is that the more I drink at home on my own, the more I can drink in each session. So, 1 bottle of wine will progress to 1 bottle of wine and a beer, and then 1 bottle of wine and 2 beers and so on. I am watching these videos in the hope that they inspire me to stop - although I'll be honest the thought of never drinking again is a scary thought. I wish I could just be a social drinker.

Some relationships last until both parties are in recovery, but honestly, staying sober and growing in your new way of life are way more important. Taking care of yourself and staying away from situations that are destructive to your sobriety are your new foundations and will serve you well. It's hard to be around active alcoholics and not get sucked back into the games and disease, and you really have a lot more to live for than that. Congrats on staying with it!!! It’s not that some people have an “addictive voice”, it’s an addictive personality. Once you get the “addictive voice” that’s a sign you have become addicted to the substance you’ve been abusing. Which is what to expect. For some people it takes longer, and for some a lot less. ALCOHOL IS FOR LOSERS. Got a t-shirt that says that and people hate me for it but I don’t care lol. 1 YEAR CLEAN!

Here’s the trap people fall into, I think, when getting sober: they think they’re giving something up. But that’s really just because of our culture’s totally backwards attitude toward alcohol: it’s marketed to us as fun, cool, sophisticated. And then our friends and family tell us as such. We’re questioned why when we tell people we don’t drink. But… alcohol isn’t any of those things. It’s a highly addictive, dangerous drug that has the capacity to cause all sorts of mayhem and chaos in people’s lives. Once you realize this, that alcohol is just another drug, you see you’re giving up NOTHING positive and gaining everything in return. This, IMO, is the real trick to quitting drinking alcohol - not deluding ourselves into thinking we’re missing out on something good (we’re not).

I have to say, this is quite uninformative and a bit of an airy fairy view of alcoholism. Simply stopping could be very harmful advice to some, and its not all sunshine and rainbows when you do. You failed to address some key issues involved with the actual process of stopping in the first place and the longevity of that process both physically and mentally. Bit of a poor Ted Talk tbh.

Yeah plug in the jug , and “ pink cloud “ are real . Recovery makes you look at why drank in the first place . That witch is “ obsession” and the voice that’s says hey get some more ( once you start ) called craving . Formidable foes never overcome without a spiritual awaking

It just blows my mind that drinking a poison is socially acceptable. Commercial, magazine ads, billboards, drinking is everywhere you look. There's a bar on every corner, basically a crack house on every corner. The amount of deaths per year because of alcohol is staggering. The relationships it ruins is staggering. How and why have we let it get to this point? Mind blowing.

I stopped in April 2009 and never looked back. The alcohol free trend is very heartening. It's a joy to go to a party, to dinner, etc., an never worry about drinking too much, hangovers, etc. For those of you thinking about stopping -- go for it. You won't regret your decision.

i never was an alcoholic, however i stopped drinking 5 years ago. the change of my life is incredible. the way i use my time is just another world. what i can say is besides alcohol being a poison, it is a WASTE OF TIME, ENERGY... be smart! don't get brainwashed into alcohol. many people try to ridicule me too.. they just ridicule themselves. they say i abstain, and restrain myself from enjoying... well i have other ideas of enjoying myself. i dont have to abstain. my body does not like/want alcohol. wake up!

Agree, I say killing brain cells just dosnt sound like a good time. Awe the illusion of delusional thinking while practicing the poison is mind blowing.

in my fridge there are cold bottles of water and Dr. Pepper now. I had started drinking back in 1999 6 years after my parents were killed. I was like "This will definitely help" Oh but I would never get behind the wheel while intoxicated. First and last DUI, wound up crashing my truck in to a ditch. This was in 2007. Alcohol would never have me in its grips. Oh how wrong I was about everything. That alcohol elevator had hit bottom and continued on through to the earth's crust in to the mantle taking me along with it. 3 years sober now

I quit drinking alcohol this past March right as COVID-19 began to take a stronghold here in the US. I had been sober curious for a few weeks leading up to that point, and when I stopped I didn't think I could give it up completely. I read several books about sobriety and watched many videos just like this one, and that really helped me to stay on track. Quite honestly, becoming sober was the BEST decision I ever made in my life. On the surface, I was not considered an "alcoholic," but I still drank enough on most occasions to the point where I experienced hangovers, headaches, and anxiety constantly. I feel so much more free, joyful, and strong without this substance that most people struggle to live without. Not every day is easy, but it is so worth it. And this video hit the nail on the head with the quote, "the opposite of addition is connection." Even 6 months later, I still take it one day at a time!

My partner joined a treatment center today after dealing with this for over ten years. I’m really proud of him and can’t wait to see him and build routines that will help us reach our goals together. It is hard to be in a relationship with someone who’s life is taken over by this and I know it’s harder for them. I’m hoping that I am able to help and encourage him to keep going.
