In this module we will be giving a quick overview to the application of complexity theory to the social sciences what we call social complexity, we start off with a very broad discussion surrounding the scientific enterprise as we talk about paradigms in general and the Newtonian paradigm in particular. We will go on to talk about how the basic assumptions underpinning our traditional formal approaches, begin to fail when we start to deal with more complex systems consisting of a very many autonomous, diverse, components, that are highly interconnected and interdependent, as often is the case within the social sciences. We briefly introduce complexity theory as an alternative approach to modeling these complex systems, an approach that is based upon a paradigm inherited from systems theory. Finally, we touch upon how complexity science is based upon a new set of computational methods and how big data is set to have a transformative effect on the social sciences in the coming decades

Thank you so much! I can't explain what a difference this is making to my education. You seem to organise and explore all my own ideas in great detail making the whole affair of grasping complexity far easier! I honestly believe that complexity theory applied to social science is the paradigm shift of the 21st century, Kuhn would be proud!! Again thank you so much complexity learning! Your my heroes!

The most exciting video I have seen on the internet. The future is going to be more complex and so much simplier. See you there!!!!!

Hi all there. I really need some clarification on the definition of synthesis and its implications, as said from 14:15 . My thesis is about questioning the dominant synthesis applied to explain the expansion a Neolithic horizon in East Asia; so this would give me a solid philosophical base to start the enquiry from. Is there a specific definition of synthesis (and its limitations), dictionaries aside, that you could suggest me, as formulated by theorists and/or, let's say, pragmatists? That would be very helpful. Thanks.

Great overview guys, did you use complexity theory approach in making the course too, complexity theory for pedagogy? :D.

Great content, unfortunately you got the complexity of Britain wrong and called it England. This is something more than a simple error in terms of discussing complexity and systems thinking.
