For anyone who wants to improve their social and communication skills, exactly that what he is talking about, you should study how he is speaking. He is a great example of someone who knows how to get his information (in any form) across while keeping the listener engaged. We all have the potential to be like that!

It's a shame some of the most valuable, most intelligent, hard working, and skilled employees get passed over in favor of the bubbly, overly positive, bullshit artists who lack any skills other than social. I think social skills are important but that passion and hard work are more important. Who said life was fair though.

true, corporate con artists can make a career pretending. i've seen times and times again incompetent, unreliable people gain more and more traction, attention, rewards just for being 'connected', visible, always focused on one thing only : themselves, spending their days managing up, be in the spotlight. that's the truth. sometimes yes they eventually get fired but they just jump into another boat and start again

This not about personality, it's about social intelligence...there is a huge difference. If your personality is cast in inflexible stone and you cannot alter or manage your personality to embrace change or evolution, or cope with extraordinary amounts of stress, for example, or manage diversity, then no amount of hard work will get you there.

@zrk9a i dont know you but the way you asked the question is impressing. My response for your question is that dont think that anybody is a stranger. When you said, 'I really need help' that says that you are great to accept that you are having great value for others, and actually you are more intelligent and capable just like any other human in this world. Just have a welcoming pleasant smile whenever you see a new person (i dont call peoples strangers :) Hope it helps..

Group think: not everyone in the group is committed to working or moving the group forward. How do you eliminate negativity on the job? Especially when one can no longer avoid these interruptions to get work done.

@mjpitche I think it does sometimes happen that an employee pulls the wool over management's eyes. However, management who are emotionally and socially intelligent themselves eventually see through it. I would say true emotional/social intelligence is not separate from integrity. It's the difference between character and personality. @sibzism, I believe that situation and audience can make things harder or easier but not impossible. Honesty empathy begets the same.

Perhaps my perception of this video was different. I think he mentioned that “bubbly” personality is not always the case. There great positions for those who are hardworking, dedicated and skilled albeit upper management requires an additional skillset; one that is often a gift rather than learned. Having EQ is not the same as being sociable. I know many people who are social butterflies and extraverted, but do not possess the EQ required for leadership and vise versa.

All the emotional and social intelligence concepts are excellent. But are they easy to apply? I think the hardest thing to do is to put all this concepts in our day-to-day life.

I disagree with Goleman's statement regarding the true assessment of emotional intelligence, ".....but at work what you can do is ask other people" Really?? My gut feeling says that scenario spells disaster and makes you look like an insecure person.

The social aspect is the most critical in leaders. Steve Jobs' intelligence and willpower is all good and fine but if he was an awkward guy with social anxiety who can't communicate he would've been better off as a garbage man.
@randy109

Very interesting. Old cliche' "2 heads are better than 1" comes to mind. Social Intelligence, in a nutshell might be "27 heads are better than 1"! Do you have the ability to consume, and utilize the input of a group? If you do you have a good foundation for leadership and comradery for your team...

@jamel11234 Sounds like you are assuming what's reported in the media is the status quo. I'd be naive to not believe what you say in the political and corporate world isn't going on. But it always isn't the case (ie, name your favorite politician, Chik-Fil-A's CEO, etc). But, I agree, but on a different point: the problem with such courses are that they give lofty platitudes and concepts, but no real practical training. We know what to believe (preaching to the choir?), not what to do.

There are number of ways to train an individual to have more emotional and social intelligence. Some of the main components needed is a high level of awareness and a high level of understanding. These skills can take a number of years of consistent training, guidance and feedback to bring to a high level, but are teachable. Bob Lee, Head Instructor, 3rd Degree Black Belt

We talk about good leadership in universities but real life tells a different story..if its not the political leader infringing on human rights in some third world country or corrupt greedy politicians (ummm america?) in developing ones, CEO's paying themselves exorbitant amounts of money, or supervisors on some kind of power trip..yea it is safe to say that all of the idealistic qualities propagated by leadership development courses are ambitious theories at best...

@19zxcvbnm19 I'm talking about sociological leaders, the kind discussed in the video. Having a popular comedy shitcom doesn't qualify Seinfeld to be a politician or a general. No Alpha has magic powers. They take and maintain power because others give it to them. If Alphas were not respected they could not exist. Take any ancient King or leader named "the Great" or so on. How do you think they got that title? Hugs and kisses? That is a WAR title. Guaranteed.

@19zxcvbnm19 Even if they were good people they were killed. Society saw their goodness and REJECTED it. One drop of warm kindness in the cold lake of humanity doesn't change the temperature of the waters at all. Seinfeld is not relevant because we are talking about leaders. He was not a leader in any sense. Though he was callous, selfish and arrogant thus illustrating my previous point that wholesome characters are not popular.
@sibzism
@sibzism 12 лет назад
Umm...none of this is new NOR is it empirically robust in research! Women have been BEING 'emotionally intelligent' for centuries! But emotional intelligence without the right situational correlates and the right responding audience is nothing! (and you cant pick your audience...especially in organisations!) Plus, I read the study about "correlations"...and we all know that correlation does not imply causation...there are other things that can account for that! This is just a new fad!!

The second thing is, your comment doesn't have any base or funament, not even an opinion, you're just saying I don't know what I talk about. So, what should I know to say what I say, in your opinion?. And the last thing, I'm not part of the 70% I'm describing in my comment... I'm pretty sure about that ;)
