I love this video! One factor that I feel like I would love for you to highlight how fucked social media apps are and how they’re now geared towards making as much screen time and money off of as possible. When was first created, it was made for people to publish photos, when Facebook was first created, it was made for you to make friends and connect with people online. Now, both of them have reels, which is something that is completely identical between the two apps and is basically TikTok, but on a different platform , why is it there? Just for money These social media apps would have a configuration to allow you to disable certain features so you could at least benefits from connecting with friends and family, while also not inhibiting from social media entirely, but that’s not gonna make money, isn’t it?
Ahhh, it's not so bad mate. Took a bit of getting used to the first few times, but I think it fits in with your personality and delivery. It does get a bit disorientating though when it's in a series of every few seconds. 😁
No i like this, suits your style quite a lot. Would suggest less of a 90 degree angle though, just a little bit aside (45+) from main angle conveys the same point and when you're juggling angles it'll look less unnnatural.
You just shared my reason for going to uni "getting pissed 3 nights and trying to get my end away". My qualification at the end was a bonus if you can call it that.
Great video, I'd argue against your idea that a 2.1 in college is equivalent to a picture on Tinder. Pictures take close to zero real effort to create (and alter etc). Same for a few sentences you could literally make up. Getting a 2.1 requires work, or at least proves you can apply yourself over 3+ years to achieve something. Its not the Hiring managers fault if someone embarked on a college course that they didn't like in the first place. Also, to be honest no one loves every aspect of their college course and this is the same in jobs. We like parts , we don't like others but we stick with it and prove we're dependable.
Thought that but can't deny he's fucked up his heart with those steroids, might not lower his lifespan by a decade but not will eating McDonald's once a week necessarily
"If you can be dishonest, as long as people's best interests are at heart, where does that stop?" While that is an inherently oxymoronic statement, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. So, Hell I guess.
The amount of support Eddie Abbew gets is concerning. He calls out people like James and Layne Norton, calling their work ‘fucking bullshit’, all because they pointed out that Eddie doesn’t back anything up with evidence. The guy just walks round a store and calls everything shit, how are people following him? Any diet advice that is reactionary I just don’t trust personally, whether it’s carnivore or vegan. They have legitimacy sure, but the community around these diets is so toxic, including people like Eddie.
decent video. wouldn't agree with metaphor regarding hiring and dating, it is a bit off...in many cases hiring a college graduate over the one who isn't has an objective reason behind it. In dating though, you are spot on, objectivity is out of the picture.
100% be careful what you click like on...the algo can become absolute dirt if you don't feed it right. On the other hand some carefully selected positive stuff can be very nourishing. I fucked off facebook 2 years ago because nobody wants to see their mate from 10 years ago's 76 holiday snaps or the lad from school who ate crayons' new range rover on HPI... it can be what you allow it to be but always with some synasism
All good, except the uni part. I'm currently studying and the UK is following the USA. More than 50% of people finish Uni and that makes the paper obsolete, that's why in states more and more companies don't ask for it as it is a sign of achievement no more. Not to mention that plenty of kids nowadays are treating Uni as a 4 year party. So interesting take on all but imo this is a total miss.
Fair enough Eddie Abbews approach isn’t perfect, but he’s not far off the message in Chris van Tulleken’s book Ultra Processed People, which is backed by lots of science and completely changed the way I eat. No calorie counting, just real food. My body knows when I’ve eaten enough.
No facebook anymore since 2014 and no instagram anymore since 2020 because that was the year people start to act crazy with their face masks etc. - I only got youtube left which is better.
James, you are a voice of reason in this social media circus. I'm 27, in a stereotypical "good job" with a masters degree, in decent shape, yet somehow i still feel like jackshit. Social media is drip fed poison to the soul and I'm finally starting to truly see what its doing to me and the people around me. The reality is, life aint easy and its a miracle we all get through modern digital existence without losing the plot. Thank you for the work you do brother. I hope everyone here finds good friends to keep us sane and help us enjoy the little things. Love to all
I actually quit social media a few years back and dating apps a few days ago... I'm actually feeling a lot better generally. Comparison is the thief of joy However I still need to let the super massive guy in the gym just be- he's doing his thing, I've got mine. The head can be a cruel thing
Yah on social media every 15 years old living the dream somehow hustling money every day they say 😂 living in fancy hotels and driving supercars i see so many of these clowns and selling they bullshit guide how can you become like him too
we need more of these proper male role models. the whole red pill-y alpha chad bros with absurd ideas, body, practices, mentality have taken over social media and so many people are suffering because of this.
Motion sickness am I right? Changes in angle sometimes is meant to increase viewer retention in our attention deficit riddled world but sometimes it goes a bit far.
I've been preaching your video for years now!! My hubby is a bald, 5"6 and on the chubby side. In his words "He reached and I settled". Over a decade I explained to everyone why that might be correct regarding our looks but false in every other way. You can party from 9 p.m. till 9 a.m with him, is a great family guy, is funny as hell, his work ethic is out of this world, you need help at 4 in the morning, he'll be there. Finally, after 10+ years of relationship. He finally understands. I didn't settle. I got everything I wanted and more. Now I joke that hubby no. 2 will never compare to him 😂
@@okaySam And do what? I can't place your comment. So far he also says he got everything in me he wanted from a wife so I don't think there is any waking up to do.
Very good message here James, spot on and as for Men’s Health utter todgers, in the UK I used to be a subscriber of their magazine from circa 2005 to 2007 and continued to purchase every month when I moved here in 2008, I entered a photo competition in that year, I didn’t make the cut which wasn’t the issue rather the lack of variety in the applicants that made the cut for the page. From then on vowed to never purchase another Mens Health magazine until the day I die. As you said “utter plebs”.
I love James' content, he's a superb communicator and cuts through all the crap, but the shameless plugging of Neutonic with their row of eyes staring at me to buy feels like a parody in the context of what he's talking about. For someone who made videos saying you don't need Athletic Greens, Huel or the Whoop strap, I just can't help feeling his venture into neutropic supplementation is just a shit test for us to make sure we are paying attention.
I agree, kinda. We both appreciate James’ content and I agree his delivery is top tier because he says exactly what needs to be said. It’s the second part of your comment that I’m having trouble with because yes he’s historically bashed other drink brands and has recently created his own but to my, maybe naive, understanding he’s created his drink with everything he believes those other drinks lack and following that logic why shouldn’t he promote something that he believes everyone will benefit from, it’s his channel.
@@j_h4z don't get me wrong, I'm not hating, I think he's great. But he is a brilliant salesman above all else. Every influencer has to have an angle, and his is being the truly transparent guy who exposes the lies and fake promotions of the industry he works in. He's leveraged his reputation for trustworthiness to expand into multiple different areas, from online training academy, to popular social media influencer, to author of multiple books, and now to selling his own drinks product. And mad respect to him for all this by the way, I genuinely hope he becomes a multi millionaire, I really respect the hustle. But I just can't see James saying of any other product by anyone else, that you really need it. Just get to bed earlier, work on your sleep hygiene, get some sunlight on waking and instead of wasting money on a drink, spend it on healthy fruits and vegetables would be his advice if this drink was being sold by anybody else. Doesn't stop me liking him though, he really does make top tier content.
@@j_h4z Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating. I really like his content. But he's a brilliant salesman above all else. Every influencer has a sales pitch or angle, and his is being the trustworthy guy who exposes the lies and fake BS of everybody else in the industry, including calling them all out by name. He's incredibly media savvy and has leveraged his reputation for humour and trustworthiness into building an online training academy, becoming a leading social media influencer, then branching out to write three books on diet, life coaching and confidence, and now has built his own company selling a productivity drink. I just don't think James would recommend you buy the drink if it was sold by anybody other than him. He'd say you should just go to bed earlier, work on your sleep hygiene, get some sunlight first thing when you wake up and spend the drink money on getting some healthy fruits and vegetables. Anyway, I'm not hating on him. I've used his academy, and have bought all three of his books in hardback, as well as having them on Audible. His content is great, I just find him hawking his own productivity drink whilst ripping apart other people for selling their own stuff a bit hypocritical. I will say though, he's great at selling himself, which is a skill i could really benefit from, so if/when he released his How to Sell Anything book I will definitely buy it.
I disagree for two key reasons. Firstly, it's his own company, not a sponsorship he's paid to do, thus there's a lot more need to make sure he's got his shit right, he's not just financially invested, he's personally invested, yes they can overlap, but there's no extra layer of attachment for insert podcaster banging on about Athletic Greens. Secondly, those brands constantly assault me with how amazing and perfect they purportedly are, both James and Chris have been perfectly up front about what Neutonic DOESN'T do. Of course, healthy skepticism is optimal, so I get it
Related to the orthorexia part, it goes even further than food imo. I suspect a rise in just general anxiety because it's easy to be so bombarded these days with these messages about how you're doing everything the wrong way: you're eating wrong, you're drinking water wrong, you're sleeping wrong... And so on. This weird overcomplicating of life. When most of the time just the basics would apply.
Omg yes, I actually wish I knew less about "health". It was easier for me to just calorie count and lose weight years ago because I had 1 simple goal and I felt good I was hitting it. Now I feel like I'm failing a bit because I'm not getting loads of protein and even when I do is it bio available etc etc... 🤯
You're also lifting weights wrong, running wrong, hanging from a bar wrong, simultaneously exercising too much and not enough - and your breathing while you do it? Pfft, that's all wrong too
Next to daddynoel, hybrid calisthenics, you are also in the group of content creators, I share with friends who want to try to "do better", love your content, please stay as you are. Ordinary people and people who want to skip bullshit need you out there. Have a nice week ❤
Every time I stumble on a James Smith video I am absolutely impressed with how in tune he is with the issues we face. Keep it up man, you have a really healthy perspective on life and you’re doing awesome!
I went from 131 down to 89 kilograms through alternate-day-fasting, walking, weight-lifting and a high-protein low-carb diet. Due to an official diagnosis in Binge Eating Disorder I have been extremely careful at who I listen to, making sure they have credentials and I have kept myself to science-based information only while escaping a lot of pseudo-science in the fasting community. I understand there is no magic to fasting beyond that being in ketosis turns off my appetite which helps me to reduce calories consumed. I understood that the rumors about "autophagy" in the fasting community didn't match what the research actually said. Instead of "commit to clean fasting" and "go full keto" I had milk in my coffee and diet cola while upping to high protein and kept good carbs like fiber and potatoes. Instead of "fasting longer" I understood the value of Non-Activity Exercise Thermogenesis and forced myself to become more active. Depending on where I was on my journey I was able to do new things, like starting to walk long distances when I went below 110kg, something I couldn't do when I was at 131kg, and I understood the value of building muscle when my weight-loss got slower to get my metabolism back.
@@carlmarch9591: It definitely is. I am 85kg now so it have been working though. I had therapy for binge eating disorder for nine months two years before I started on ADF and it helped me to realize I had to stop restricting to succeed. While ADF is a form of restriction, not eating for an entire day while on ketosis helped. Then on my eat days I eat every 1-3 hours, on time, with prepared meals, based on my nutritionist and therapists guidelines, and my target weight TDEE.
Mate, I started working in the fitness industry in 1984 and have seen the changes it has undergone over the past decades. I witnessed the rise of personal training in the 90s. While I saw many who had great qualifications and approach, I also saw the rise of the exact opposite. Moving forward to the rise of social media and so called influencers, I find it easy to agree with you on so many levels. It's a toxic jungle out there now. One more shirtless goose standing there with a six pack claiming their secrets to '' The Best Way to Get Shredded '' or '' The Best Exercise for Big Shoulders '' etc, its an absolute joke. Being lean and sporting a six pack says very little about one's overall health and wellness. Interestingly, I'm originally from Sydney but now live in Sweden. A huge cultural difference when it comes to health and appearance. Last time I was in Sydney I couldn't help but see the difference. people here have no hang ups about there appearance. There is no social pressure here for example for older woman to hide behind a one-piece at the beach. Regardless of body type, bikinis rule and you'll never hear someone comment on a woman or man who has a podgy body. Swedes are active people who generally have no hangups about body image. I found it extremely refreshing to see. These RU-vid idiots are promoting a nonsustainable way of life that has very little credit. There is no balance nor true cognitive understanding of the crap they peddle to the masses. Keep up the great work James.
It's the same in Finland. Both cultures have a) a close relationship with activity/sport, b) a similarly close relationship with nature and c) the experience of sauna/bastu where people are naked and can see what we really look like. In cultures like the UK, Oz and the US we never see naked or semi clothed people unless they are models, so we think we are deficient for not being that. Who benefits? The people selling us crap to make us feel better about it, and the fitness industry that capitalises on our insecurities.
Yeah, people do ridiculous nonsense like taking roids, and riding fake bicycles in their houses instead of outside where the fresh air and sunshine is.
I never stop to think how bad social media has warped my perception of things, it's insane. You make some very solid points man. I find when I just naturally ate healthy and never strived to be picture perfect I was always the happiest at that time.
Social media is a product of a much broader issue, the internet. I never quite understood why swearing on the radio results in a FCC complaint but the internet is a Pandora’s box of disturbing information and pictures with no government oversight.
Quitting alcohol, caffeine, and social media other than RU-vid has done wonders for me. I’ve found a sense of peace again and it’s made me realize just how much the notion of expertise has died since the rise of social media.
I didn't go to university, got a job in an office, worked hard, got a promotion. Found myself working alongside graduates with significant student debts earning the same as me.
Yeah so did I, but after I made money I went to University in my spare time, first getting a BSc Hons degree and next getting a MSc. What I learned from formal education was invaluable to taking my career and my life to the next level. It taught me how to learn, research, gave me different perspectives on the world. My point is, lets stop knocking people for going into formal education and seeing it as a waste of time. I wouldn't change the way I did it, but doing it straight from school is just another equally valid way.
There are some jobs that require a degree and proper training too, so uni is not just uni. Some degrees are useless, but we need doctors and lawyers and teachers, etc, to go to uni.
Social media is fucking us up. 3 months ago apart from RU-vid i signed out of every account. It was like a come down from ectasy. Withdrawals were ridiculous
That’s actually really interesting, I’ve half arsed tried and know exactly what you mean by this! How long did it last and how did you divert attention from the withdrawals?
Thank you for sharing this - I've tried but always end up back on them - how long did it take to get passed the withdrawel phase and what did you do to stop temptation!
What's even more crazy about the hiring practises of certain firms, they will only hire graduates from a handful of British universities which have 2:1's and above. So it equates how good you'll be at the job, by how well you did in your A levels. Madness.
Even funnier when you consider ill-earned the reputations of those "top-tier" universities are. I did my BSc at Bangor Uni, at the time firmly in the bottom third of the league tables, and it was fantastic. Great staff, well organised, I learnt a ton, fantastic clubs and societies. I did my PGCE at Durham Uni and my partner did a masters at Newcastle Uni, both Russel Group, supposedly great institutions, and we found both to be terribly organised, with lecturers who cared only about their research and treated teaching as a necessary annoyance
@@FullOfSpuds Doesn't surprise me at all. Worked with old boys from some of the elite uni's (and elite public schools for that matter), and they're thick as two short planks. If they'd not had top tier educations, they'd not be in the job, never mind the industry. Those uni's and public schools are worth their weight in connections and 'Old Boys' networks.
Just came across your channel James. I am at uni currently and I was so conflicted by information from different influencers, where it be to have huel or the diet which Eddie preaches. Thank's for clarifying the madness of the social media space at the moment, you have helped me a lot.
I'm going through the same process, I did really believe that Eddie's words were the truth, I hope James just isn't another "influencer" and that I can rely on his methods.
Dude, I tried clean eating, supplementing, I discovered I have sibo, and all treatments suck, my gut gets inflamed by most sugars that I don't digest, and believe me I have tried to add them and it sucks, I get bloating and if I continue migraines. Was suggested the carnivore diet, all bloating gone, energy back, body composition way up, and also weird things like flaking skin and bleeding gums have gone. I also know this is the case for already millions of people that have resolved autoimmune issues by going carnivore.
@@Macgee826 Yeah, I sometimes eat a sugary thing and then after a few hours I notice I'm back to feeling anxiety and down and wonder what the heck, then I remember what I ate and confirm this, every single time.
I used to think social media was only affecting women by giving them unrealistic dating expectations. The more I see, the more I realize how it's poisoning *ALL* of us.
Really? You just got that now? Social media and internet are no better than TV and cinema. Adds and companies, the Elite. They want to destabilize us and separate us even more. It's all a grand scheme so they can get richer of our backs by controlling us better.
I literally do everything I can to help my mental health. A healthy balanced diet consisting of everything, I exercise and sleep well, but I’m still depressed. Some things are so more complex…🤷🏻♀️
Dr Ilardias depression cure. All science backed steps, 30 mins daily of prenoon sun exposure, supplementation at correct type, dose and ratio of omega 3s, (this step alone has results as good as many leading antidepressants,) vit D3 supplementation and I think another 4 steps. Many are free, the rest are cheap and most require little or no motivation. His lecture detailing the steps is on youtube.
Find a different way to show off your drinks. The constant flipping back and forth made me ill, so I stopped watching the screen. My subconscious probably associates your drink with feeling nauseous now.
Research is pointing squarely at metabolic health and mitochondrial dysfunction. High insulin levels cause high Rala which causes high DRP which leads to mitochondrial fission. The carnivores are right.
Too much side camera. It sworks well when he looks to the side and talks for a bit, especially to emphasize that portion. But jumping to the side for 1 or 2 words over and over is just annoying.
I think Eddie broad message is a lot more powerful than you calling his audience idiots, if someone blindley follows what ever someone says they are a sheep and not everything someone says I will agree with them but Eddie's message of eat more meat and less crap is what I have taken away from him I think you should do they same instead of slandring him online, just my 2 cents.
Eddie is not wrong when he says eggs are more nutrient dense than a cookie BUT that's where It ends. His approach is so strict and he doesn't take into account that people will eat those foods but their quality of life might be shit if they remove everything else, can't participate in life because they are fasting for 23h every single day. With a shitty relationship with food you won't have a good life so maybe a more balanced approach is more sustainable. If Eddie's approach was sustainable, it would have worked by now.
So wait, insulin has no relation to gaining weight? Why did I lose weight the momsnt I stopped eating so many carbs and replaced it with meat products and eggs? So correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've heard this is what happens: - Body goees after carbs as fuel first, so as long as you keep eating things with sugar and spiking your insulin, your body won't go after the fat and this is why high meat diets work for losing fat cos with less sugar the body needs to go for fat reserves.
I’m type 1 diabetic. People who increase their fat increase their need for insulin as fat induces insulin resistance. That Eddy guy has no idea what he is on about.
@@MichaelHorstmann Yes. Insulin sensitivity is highest when one eats more carbohydrates and less fat. As an example, I’ve eaten 1.25kg of carbs in a single day as a diabetic and my insulin to carb ratios were incredibly high. The more fat I eat, the worse my blood sugars become.
Yep. My triglycerides jumped as did my A1c and while I’m not diabetic I was well on my way with the keto diet (and yes I wore the cam and checked blood ketones). Spat that red pill out about 10 years ago and won’t look back. 😊
That may be specific to type 1 diabetics. The more fat I eat and the less carbs I have has taken me completely out of prediabetes. I can't agree with you on a universal scale when what I do has the exact opposite of effect of what you claim.
Just mad cause Eddie's making more money doing more or less the same thing you're doing.. posting videos on the internet. You are also putting him on your video thumbnail as click bait after all to sell whatever brand of drink you are selling over there XD nice
What’s bad about Eddie genuinely? All I’ve seen him say is eat real food and stop poising yourself with processed shit that causes diseases later… EDIT* ANYONE?!?!😂
I mean I've only seen some of Eddie's stuff through friends, but most of what passes as food these days is indeed crap. So to compare him to someone like liver king is, I think unfair.
It’s nice to see that there are some young people out there with good heads on their shoulders. I’m in my 50’s and I’m happy to say that at my age I don’t follow the nonsense out there, there is more to life than social media, and social media isn’t social. Well said young man 🫡 you absolutely hit the nail on the head.
James mate, I followed your FB page when the only videos you did were daily Q and As and you didnt even have an app yet. You are still as genuine and following the same approach now despite all of the success you have rightly had. I suffer quite badly with Orthorexia and I have never really spoken about it, but social media is by far the only thing i can think of that made me so conscious of whether or not i was eating as “clean” as possible. Not only that but body image is the same issue, no matter how much progress I make i feel like a fat shit haha! You are the voice of reason man. Keep going!
Eddie spreads a good message, but people follow him mostly because he's funny and entertaining. Yeah he might not be always right but the type of people that listen to him are the type that will benefit from such basic advice and guidelines. People that are really into training and nutrition are not listening to Eddie's advice
Eddie is easily the biggest tool I've found on social media and it's genuinely scary how many people follow him. They're literally promoting eating disorders
@@RBC0405he knows his stuff about bodybuilding for sure……the other stuff I’m not to sure, he states 9 out 10 diseases are caused by diet……I’d like to see his evidence. He might be right who know, but he refuses to debate ? Wonder why
Imagine coming for Eddie Abeww saying what he says isnt science based, then says shit thats not science based. Eddie is one of the only good fitness influencer, you are a joke for coming for that guy.
4:01 These COVID comments kinda took me of guard James. For someone i definitely consider to be quite a smart well read individual, it was odd to hear you talk down the vaccines safety after all the data we have accumulated but maybe i am being bad faith. Could you explain what the government lied about or how the vaccine hasnt clearly prevented large amount of illness and death on a nationally level? The reality is both people most likely have good intentions but you both disagree on the methods of achieving it.
I agree, as soon as he said that the government lied about how safe vaccines were I paused the video and probably won't watch the rest because this is the first time I've heard him say something that was just utter crap. Disappointing tbh to make a video about how social media is messing us up and how to avoid it, yet is here pretty much talking nonsense about vaccines being unsafe.
Don't let the truth throw you off guard. The vaccine efficacy data was flawed and manipulated, big pharma took advantage of an unprecedented situation to leverage a product that has been proven to NOT offer the protection it originally and then ongoing stated, let alone discuss the potential of long term side effects and injury related deaths. These are facts and to deny these answers to the public - still to this day is a crime conducted by the manufacturer. Do you think a pharmaceutical company would need 75years of data censorship if they were in it for reasons other than mere profit? Look up the original research, control groups and sample size that Pfizer based their vaccine marketing upon to understand what we were sold. The truth is now much more documented where only a year ago or so it was not. Do not forget that even asking questions regarding the safety of these vaccines ostracized normal curious people into enemies of the community and state by their neighbours and government. Revealing the truth has taken time when it was intentionally hidden and manipulated by those in profit through 'legacy media' and government mouthpieces. Keep doing what you're doing James, driving up the standard of content up in RU-vid keeping the faith that the world hasn't gone completely mad. Thank you 🙏
in the same boat as you on this, very strange to see only 2 ppl in the whole comment section talking abt it as well. anti vax rly is just way more mainstream now than that of 15 years ago
I like James and Eddie but if don't know what to believe just take information intake with a pinch of salt regardless of who it is and if you want to put all your eggs in one basket at least take the extra step to do some research yourself to educate yourself.
