I have got interview with university for MA social work. They have given me task to write 500 words reflecting on 2 key points from the article they have provided. Article topic is if social work knowledge is still based on western values, can practice really be anti oppressive? Can you guide me this. What to read and how to write my piece?

Hi it's always best with these to just show you are open to various perspectives but provide arguments for what you are saying. I find Neil Thompson's work around anti-oppressive approaches helpful. Some initial thoughts about the question below. Not a definitive answer - just some considerations. Social work is not tied to Western values alone; it's a diverse field embracing various cultural perspectives. While it has Western roots, it's evolved globally to prioritise cultural sensitivity and social justice. However, it could be argued that further progress is needed in this area. Social workers can be anti-oppressive by respecting diverse values, challenging oppressive systems, and understanding power dynamics and privilege. So, social work can indeed be anti-oppressive regardless of its historical roots.
