Today we talk about the different ways to knit socks with a focus on comparing the 9 inch circular needles and Addi Flexi Flip/ CraSyTrio! Perfect for beginner sock knitters. I also briefly touch on different ways to knit socks with the magic loop method and with double pointed needles. What is your preferred way to knit socks?? Let me know in the comments below :)

This was a very helpful video. Especially about the 9” circulars. I only knit a little bit at a time with needles. I have such bad carpel tunnel but i absolutely love yarn, fiber, knitting ect. I make my socks on a round knitting loom with little pegs on it. Takes a while but my hand doesn’t hurt and i get the satisfaction of having my knitted projects 😊

I've knit more than 30 pairs of socks on 9" circulars and I love them. It took some getting used to but there's no going back for me. I'm so much faster with them and I love knitting socks.

@@kvopera I knit toe up magic loop to 60 stitches and the rest of the sock (including the heel)on 9 inch circulars. I've knit over 100 pairs now all on 9 inch hiya hiya needles.

I really like the music. It’s very cottagey. I have all three needle options. I’m just getting into making socks. Maybe I’ll try each one and see what I like best. Thanks for the video, it was exactly what I was looking for.

I really like this info. I have all three needle options and I’m just learning. It will be interesting to see what I like more needle wise and top down or toe up. I really really like the music. Very cottagey, love it.

So glad I stumbled upon your video before buying the flexi flips. The position of those stabby little needles would drive me nuts. I'm thinking I'm going to stick with either the 9" circular with dpns for the heels or 2 circular method with dpn for the heel. The 2 circular style actually is pretty similar to what the flexiflips achieves but with longer cords so the needles hang away from sensitive palms.

Just learning to knit socks. I’m leaning toward 9” circulars.

I did my first pair on 9” circulars and I like them, I’m doing another pair on 9” circulars doing some stranded colourwork but, I like using DPNs and would chose DPNs over magic loop and usually chose DPNs for socks too. There’s something satisfying about switching needles with DPNs and peaceful about using 9” circulars and just going around and around without thinking. I’ve never knit socks using magic loop but I usually close my hats using magic loop and I’ve done some mittens and hand warmers with magic loop and find fiddling with a cord a bit annoying. The mittens and handwarmers I did on magic loop were before I learnt to use DPNs and will knit future pairs on DPNs and hats, I’ll keep closing them with magic loop because its only a few rows anyway and I don’t always have the size I need in DPNs but I do have an interchangeable set of knitting needles.

Thanks for sharing Kathryn, this is why I love hearing what other people use and love- it definitely comes down to personal preference! Also why it is great there are so many options available to knitters. I’m glad you have methods you love 😊

Great review video! Thanks so much. I use all that you spoke about except the Flexi. I’m not sure about those. I also love to knit with 2 circs at the same time. Have you tried that?

I tried the Shorties by ChiaGoo which are interchangeable tips and can make 9" or 10" circulars. The 5" cord with one 3" and a 4" tip gives enough to hold on to with the right hand. I did not like the Flexi-Flips. I ordered size 1 but they are 1.5" so have not found a sock pattern that uses that size that I wanted to try yet. But the 10" works well. It is best though doing stockinette for me though I can do ribbing but ribbing is easier in English Flicking then I do the stockinette in Continental. I am knitting my husband some socks with a heel flap. Used Magic Loop on the part when you pick up stitches and then decrease the side gussets. Back to 10" then used Magic Loop on the toe. I do have DPNs, but prefer to use them when nothing else works.

Kendra Makes Yes, I think it is a matter of how it feels in your hands and if you have any tension in your hands. I'm 66 so sometimes I have some soreness in my fingers and if I slept on one of my hands. If I am getting bored I change knitting styles just because or turn it inside out and knit backwards. I'm at the age my dad showed the first signs of Alzheimer's so knitting is one of my strategies in fighting back. It is one of those things which is good for the brain. So when I am more self-disciplined I do what is hardest because it keeps me being me not just for me, but so that my family does not have to take care of me. My older sister did not live past 65, she was 5 years older than me. Both my parents are dead as is my brother also. And grandparents long gone. So the best I can do is to find out how to be me and do it well. So well, that I am well. We know more now and so while I knit I am watching health videos so we stay out of the doctors offices. I do not take any medications but do take vitamins. Here's a wonderful thing why knitting is so good for the brain: it releases endorphins that runners get in their second wind and why they run to experience that exhilaration. The seconds the circulation of blood in the brain as the hands, being so engaged, draw the blood which comes up from the inside of the brain, to the outside of the brain as the surface area is devoted to what we do with our hands. Consequently the blood is being pulled through all the brain and feeding them all. And since one can knit while listening to videos, I am engaging more of my brain and when I am able to remember what I heard, another part. I was having memory issues. But I went back to knitting. The brain is more plastic than we think, we can repair ourselves. But we are not carnivores, we are herbivores. If you want an interesting video on the subject, Dr. Milton Mills is so good at explaining why we are plant-eaters. And as it is the best for the brain and all the other organs in the body, that is what I have become. But I can think, I had stopped driving because I could not remember if a car was there when I went to turn left. Now I can remember. I could not find my car on the parking lot, now I can remember. I was coming home several times because I could not remember if I had closed the garage. I was locking myself out of the house. I have not done that now in years, but have been a complete vegetarian for years. My family thinks I am stupid. No, but I am not into fun the way they are, I have to see life more seriously. I've looked into stark blackness with no thoughts in my own head and came back from that brink by my will and God's help. So if your grandma knits you a hat or a sweater, it is an act of love for you but a double act in that you can have a conversation with her. When one you love most has forgotten your name, it cuts to your heart. We are a creation of God, He knit us together in our mother's womb. We are to experience and give love in all we think and do. You are most kind. Love your channel.

I love my dpns but they scare people at the airport so I had to learn magic loop. I'm not sure about the 9" circulars but I think I would like to try the flexi flips. After a lifetime of flap and gusset socks, I've recently fallen in love with the toe up variety and German short rows. I just found your channel and I love it.

Thanks for the great review. I found your channel on another review of sock knitting and enjoyed that too. Having larger than average hands, Magic Loop or dbl points works best for me. Tried a Clover Takumi 9" fixed circ and if you see the review that Stacy of Very Pink Knits, I agree with her, there is the least of any brand of the tips to hold onto. I may try an Addi or Knitter's Pride actually have 10" and are more reasonable than Addi. Both offer a longer needle in order to hold onto it more conventionally. But I have piano player hands and have worked to stretch to play those spreads two notes over and octave, but I did have larger hands than most women before than anyway. I am still curious about them, but I still have the receipt from Joann's and will exchange the 9" Clover for double points which I can use.
