I have been collecting sockets for my Ultimate Socket Endurance Test. For the most part I have been purchasing individual sockets. However, there were a few sets which were unable to be purchased individually. These two sets for around $10 were such the case. The HyperTough from Walmart set has a retail price of $10.88 and the Pittsburgh Pro socket set from Harbor Freight has a retail price of $8.99. For my comparison test I am comparing 3/8" drive 10mm sockets. In my search I wanted to use all 6 point sockets. Unfortunately, the Pittsburgh Pro sockets were only available in 12 point. Since I acquired these tools for an upcoming video I thought these socket sets would double as a great comparison video.

Hyper tough is always good about making continuous sets which come in handy! Harbor freight is probably using the most common in their set which is all right, but I’d pay a few extra dollars just to get the hyper over Harbor freight any day also hyper tough is color-coded from metric to standard.

Honestly, the extra dollar or two for the walmart brand is totally worth it JUST for the little storage rail. Which is exactly what i want to keep them together and organized in my small toolbox

I’m in Walmart right now, and I need video reference that it worked as a rail too. The couple extra bucks for the rail sold me !

Their 1/2 drive goes from 17 to 24. I bought that set just because it completes so many other sets that like to skip larger sizes.

I have a hyper tough 1/4 set with a Pittsburgh ratchet 😁

Good comparison. I also found it very interesting on the Gearwrench internals swap to the matco ratchet! Didn't know that would work

I recently imploded a Hypertough 21mm standard (Non deep) 3/8 socket doing simple tire torquing work. Torquing my tires at 80 ft lbs. which is a minimum with a calibrated torque wrench (Most vehicles go well above this from factory spec). It worked 4 times, 4 tires on a lift to torque my Honda tires to the correct ft.lbs then on the ground to re-tighten the torque is when it imploded at 80 ft lbs of torque. Which is the bare minimum for most automotive tire wheels. I am going to return the sockets as I purchased it as a brand new full automotive kit with the case as I have already replaced them with the Pittsburg Pro Chrome-moly sockets. I definitely would not recommend Hypertough based on my experience of barely using it (Brand new) to torque tire lugs at minimum torque levels for a vehicle.

Sounds like you mean metric and also sounds like your using chrome on a impact ? That’s a no no, plus a 3/8 use 1/2 if your gonna use chrome so it might not blow up lol

I use their 17,19,21,22 everyday at the shop. 1/2 impact. They've held up for about 4 months now

thanks for the video-I purchased the SAE hex 9 piece 3/8" drive set. I now know it says "cut" by the black tabs. I twisted the heck out of it and it popped one off. Try making a comparison video how they actually grip while tightening & loosening a bolt.

If your gonna compare sockets you should consider turning a bolt or 2

Ive been using Pittsburgh pro sockets for about two years professionally. There are times i have to use a 6 point snap on or even Carlyle where the pitty wont grab. But for what they cost, i got two sets 3/8 and 1/2 and put them under alot of pressure and only broke the deep 3/8 13 mm. And it was easily replaced, for free. Until you can afford a nice flank drive snap on set...Pittsburghs are decent...also, the Pittsburgh impacts are good too. A bit softer than other brands but havent broke one yet , using my snap on 1/2 impact on them daily.

@@ThriftyGarage Not so on the CR-V Icon sockets i have stripped the chrome clean off. The impacts sockets are good though.

Yeah, me too. I threw 20 different brands of sockets into a rock tumbler for an endurance test too see how well they would hold up. The ICON did loose its chrome plating. Check out the video if your interested.

Rather than purchasing the single metric Pittsburg set for 8.99 I feel it’s a better deal to buy the kit that has both metric and sae plus a comfort grip ratchet for $20.

What about warranty? Can you just walk into Walmart and exchange lifetime stuff like harbor frieght?

As far as the sockets, which are better as far as grip and strength? Taiwan Ultra Tough is better than China Pittsburg but I also heard that these days and for the most part, most of the sockets like Pittsburgh, Ultra Tough, Quinn, and even Kobalt and Husky are all the same although I think Husky and Kobalt are the best of the low end bunch, with Husky ranking first, then Kobalt, then Ultra Tough, then Pittsburg. Unsure about Hart and Quinn, though, Any ideas? Fails? Thanks

How did these hold up? I have Pittsburgh 3/8 Deep (colorful)... and I am pretty much done with their inaccurate grab.

They are definitely on the lower quality side of the spectrum. But if you need something cheap to get you by they definitely do the job.

The best part about hyper tough is there are Walmart's everywhere and easy to get. However HF warranty can't be beat.

I couldn't take off the oil drain plug with a 6 point it was semi stripped and put a 12 point and it got it off, ever since then I love 12 point.

Should have tested their strength by measuring the torque at which they break. This video is worthless.
@ThriftyGarage
@ThriftyGarage 3 года назад
That’s harder than you think. I’ve tried testing the breaking point several times. Unfortunately it’s my setup that fails, not the socket. If I figure it out I’ll post the video.
