In this video, I will explain the Sodick OPM250L.
For the first time, Additive Manufacturing and CNC milling are merged into a single machine.Sodick's new OPM250L machine tool combines metal additive manufacturing with integral linear motor drive milling, ushering in a revolution in machine tool capacity, notably for mould tool and component fabrication.This one-of-a-kind machine provides significant advantages in the design and manufacture of plastic injection mould tools by combining metal additive manufacturing to create cooling channels of optimum shape and geometry - which are frequently impossible to machine by conventional means - with the high-speed milling required for tool finishing. So, how exactly does it work?In the simplest terms, the process is as follows: first, a metal powder is uniformly coated and then melted and solidified by scanning with a laser beam, after which the surface is subjected to high-speed milling with a rotary tool, creating the high quality accuracy, precision, and finish that a laser process alone cannot achieve, after which the metal powder is uniformly coated again and the process is repeated, again and again, until the component geometry is achieved.The OPM250L can achieve 1/100mm accuracy, free-form surfaces with complicated water cooling geometries, perfect-fit mating components, and Ra of 0.19 micron surface polish. The ability to design optimally designed cooling channels provides two major benefits: first, by improving the layout and functionality of the cooling channels to avoid heat buildup in specific areas, allowing the moulding cycle to be reduced; and second, by increasing the length of time between maintenance cycles, allowing the moulding cycle to be reduced and thus increasing overall productivity.Another advantage of the OPM250L in the manufacturing process is the ability to configure the ideal laser condition. The use of a laser with a maximum output of 500W allows for the choosing of either "speed mode" or "quality mode," allowing for outstanding surface quality, such as in plastic moulds where a high gloss finish is required.The machine may also be used to make components with intricate cooling channels or holes inside the component.The OPM250L is the culmination of many years of research and development by Sodick, culminating in a machine that provides a one-stop solution for the practical application of metal additive manufacturing combined with cutting-edge machining centre technology.
