Sodium in water explosion -Chemical Reaction 

My chemistry teacher once told me of a student who convinced a lab tech to give him a pound of sodium, the student used it at his pool party, he thought it would be cool, unfortunately the people were in the pool when he put the sodium in, all of his pool guests got third degree burns and had to be rushed to the emergency room, needless to say both the student and the lab tech were expelled from the college.

Its kind of amazing that salt (NaCl) contains Chlorine, which is a poisonous gas, and sodium, which explodes in contact with water(as seen in the video), but when you put them together it makes something completely harmless.

When I studied this reaction in junior class it was recommended to perform this reaction outside the lab but after seeing the last guy 😂

For people asking why Sodium Chloride (Table Salt) doesn't blow up, it's because they are in an ionic bond, where Sodium gives away one electron to Chlorine, making Sodium more stable since it's valence shell is now full. Same with Chlorine, but it got one electron.
