SoEW Stage 3 Theme: World of Empty Dreams 

SoEW.... that game where the bosses themes are like "YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY, CHEERFUL HIPERACTIVE SONG :DDDD" and the stage themes are like this.

PC-98 is so cheerful. PC-98 is so full of silly plot point, puns, character interactions. It's a fully different mood from the Windows games. And then there are themes like *this*.

The only boss Reimu has ever been afraid of.

Why do people say this is dark? Sure it may sound like it but I find it very magical. It's like you stepped in to a world of Blank Dreams, like a blank canvas, and started painting on it, filling it with your imagination, so it would no longer be empty...

I just don't know why PC-98 era has so many sad themes: Vanishing Dream, Dream land, Alice in Wonderland, Eternal Shrine Maiden and then this, there maybe more gems in PC-98 that I don' know

I wish more people acknowledged this theme. It's really great. ._.

This song is really growing on me.

Why is this theme so Saddest??? I can feel myself crying inside because this was the 1st time that Reimu was afraid of this boss.. Also,if you listen closely,you can hear some parts of MS soundfonts.

I think this is my favourite PC-98 theme. They just don't make them like they used to.

The boss is probably one of the weirdest bosses of the Touhou franchise... Never got through dem damn orbs :/

This is definitely one of the darkest Touhou themes.

If I remember correctly, Genjii explicitly tells Reimu that this stage is extremely dangerous, not just from barrages, but also from environment. This place is pretty much a Gensokyo version of Hyperspace. You can get lost eternally, or you can get vaporized in a matter of seconds. Even for denizens of Gensokyo, this place is unnatural. No wonder this theme feels uninviting.

PC 98 themes in a nutshell: Intro: quiet or low volume Verse: loud

The music PROGRAM! The closest thing to it i mean, like the synthesizer.

I sometimes wonder if there's a remix, but on a relaxing approach that would soothe the listener.

This theme reminds me so much of Crescent Dream.

Honestly, this song is tied with Eternal Shrine Maiden for my favorite stage theme in the PC-98 games.

This song is one of the saddest songs in the series. Is there a specific reason for that, or did ZUN just decide "HEY sad songs are kinda cool RIGHT?" ?

This music was composed for the PC-98, a Japan-only home computer. It's unlikely you can compose on it.

This is the only time I've heard this in proper stereo. Where'd you get this recording or how did you record it? In the one I have the drums sound janky as hell and in Neko Project 2 with FMGen it doesn't sound this good as well.

People calling this the darkest theme when End of Daylight exists in the very same game, that theme is so oppressively dark in comparison to this. This one's more nostalgic than anything

Well, I think on the contrary, it is because of the limitation of sounds technology back in the day, it is how such amazing tunes are made. Back in the day, because there is only a limited choice in instruments for a sound chip, composer has to rely on good melody and tune as the main method for conveying emotion. These days with modern prerecord soundtracks, most composer in modern game just lazily rely on choice of instruments for setting the mood, whereas the tune is just plain boring basic
