IN WHICH our intrepid recreatrix survives a trip to the ancestral village (it was lovely, actually), braves a hurricane (it was not lovely, at all), and finally makes it home to deliver the next installment of Soft Apocalypse Summer: the hoods! Look, it's no secret that I love a hood, and one of the easiest ways to keep cooler in the heat is to keep the sun off your head (bonus lack of scalp sunburns, those are the worst). Join me as I make not one, but two hoods suited for a post-apocalyptic fantasy character!

LotR is absolutely post apocalyptic for the elves. Also, midnight cookies in one’s thirties hits just as hard as it did when I was Tornado’s age

LotR is absolutely post-apocalyptic - the elves have obviously been through an incredible amount, but human culture is gasping for breath after the fall of Numenor, and even the dwarves have had their own calamities. It feels to me like post-apocalypse was rather the point...with JRRT and the world in general reeling from the two world wars, a story where the world ultimately recovers from great catastrophe is quite comforting.

See that was my thought as well! The Last Alliance was the end of that age and even though Sauron was defeated, it really did signal the end of that phase of civilization for both men and elves.

To me that element is why the end is so bittersweet, especially for Frodo. He saved the world in that moment, but the world was already wounded, and his wounding that would never recover reflects that. Middle Earth will continue on, but it will never be the same, just like Frodo. I feel like the films do a good job of showing some of the post-apocalypse feeling, with ruins and legends as a backdrop for the whole journey.

I once heard someone remark on how depopulated the area around the shire is. If I remember correctly that used to be the kingdom of Arnor which has since fallen, so I could definitely accept it as post-collapse. And considering Numenor was literally a god visiting destruction upon the earth for humanity's sins, I'd count that as an apocalypse too.

Midnight cookies actually sounds really good. Came for the post apocalyptic fashion, but 10 seconds in and now I want cookies, and to sit under a mist wet tree in the early hours before sunrise covered by a hood shawl drinking lavender tea and eating lemon and white chocolate cookies. As always your videos make me want to create stuff.

The background music was excellent - just the right volume and mood. I can be a cranky listener and I'm delighted you gave me an opportunity to pass on a thumbs-up. Thank you.

I JUST finished making a hooded half cloak for my son from some fabric that i thrifted. I think it was for upholstery but it is lightly quilted, same on both sides, and water resistant. In our desert, it is light enough to shade from the sun and keep the monsoon from drenching you. Being a second generation SCA'er, my son has no problems wearing this any time at all.

I like the chain detail. It's definitely subtle enough to wear with historical wear for funzies. I'm working on a decorative panel for my apron dresses... open basket weave/celtic knot applique made from all my different colored tunic dress scraps, on a lt. gray linen backer. Might come out nice, might look like my stash cupboard exploded it's guts down the front of me. 😂 Anyway, it'll be different!

I love the chain details added to the linen hood. Really gives it a more fantasy/apocalyptical vibe rather than historical. And the shimmer on that velvet in the sun was delicious!!

OMFG, finally! Finally, I'm not the only one who sees elven post-apocalyptic elements in LoTR! Thank you!

I made a light linen Skjoldehamn hood for my husband. He wears it a lot in the summer, as it provides enough shade, and sheds the heat. Both of your hoods were lovely.

I loved the idea of using a decorative chain to weigh down the hem of a lightweight hood. I may have to try that in the future. Both hoods are lovely. I like the rounded top and shimmer of the velvet one.

I like the linen hood better in this context. The velvet one is absolutely gorgeous in its own right, but it would look much better with a more "elven" outfit. Thank you for inspiring me to add head coverings to my WIP wardrobe. I got a large box full of linen clothing from a friend, but it's all in weird cuts and styles and/or does not fit me. So I'm taking the pieces apart and try to turn them into garments I will actually wear. I am drawing inspiration from several historical periods (mostly early middle ages men's wear, but also Graeco-Roman, Art Nouveau and whatever) but I always try to make the garments practical and fitting my lifestyle. So, the result is some kind of upcycled historybounding workwear, that is suitable for going by bicycle. My own interpretation of the Solarpunk style. Adding hoods to that collection is a wonderful idea, though I might go more for headscarves.

Yeah the conceit was that elves have apocalypses too (like LOTR). Glad to have inspired!

I loved this so much! I think my personal favorite is the velvet one, but I love the metal accents on the linen hood. That is so cool. What a smart touch.

Oh em gee; the chain details on the linen hood are delicious! And the drape of that velvet hood-! Also, yes, you are correct; LOTR is absolutely an apocalyptic setting.

Lotr is absolutely post apocalyptic! The velvet hood looks so good. Is it as cool to wear as the linen? I find velvet gets very warm (but that might just be me never having worked with rayon velvet, just the poly stuff)

LOTR fits in anywhere. I just love your London Hoods. But I'm imagining 1 with Worth's Lily Gown appliqué. Not period but?...How is Partner and did he get any any Hurricane damage? And has Tornado started borrowing your clothes and accessories since she's so tall?
