Follow me on Instagram where I'll post semi-regularly other practice ideas ! Groupings of 7 (cymbal) 5 (snare) 4 (HH playing time) and 3 (feathered bass drum), the whole polymeter cycle played just once. An exercise given to me by Oscar Georges. Trying to focus on keeping the 16th notes frame intact and not compromising the stroke types 'à la' Steve Lyman. Work in progress. Learn by ear, no writing down allowed, Happy Practicing :) #polyrhythms #polyrhythm #polyrhythmic #drums #drummer #drumming #drumindependence #drumpractice #trancemusic #trancemusic2024

I find it hard to hear what’s going on, but I think this is a polymeter, not a polyrythm

Hi Justus, thx for your feedback, you're absolutely right, it's a polymeter given that the start (1st note) of each grouping takes (way more) than one bar to resolve, I'll correct that in the title (got carried away there). Sorry for the audio quality, I lazily recorded that with my phone, this is basically practice footage intended to give you practice ideas so that you can make it your own. Regarding what's going on, I look at this as an evergoing 16th notes frame with: - the right hand playing the 1st 3rd and 5th notes of a 7 notes grouping - the left hand playing the 1st and 3rd notes of a 5 notes grouping - the left foot playing only the 1st note of a 4 notes grouping (i.e. playing time if we consider the beat as four 16th notes long, which would be the easiest way to practice this. But the beauty of the exercise is that you could also try to play the same thing while feeling the beat with your right foot, meaning the beat would have a triplet feel). YOUR INNER FEEL IS YOUR CHOICE whether you play this or listen to it - the right foot playing only the 1st note of a 3 notes grouping You can also look at this as a 3/4 hemiola played by the feet over which you impose the 35/16 hemiola played by the hands (those two hemiolas will form together a polymeter as well). I suggest you practice in the following order: hands together without feet --> feet together without hands --> right hand with left foot --> right hand with right foot --> left hand with left foot --> left hand with right foot --> right hand with both feet --> left hand with both feet --> all four limbs together (the entire polymer loop getting longer and longer the more limbs you add). What is played in this video is the entire polymeter loop played only once. And last but not least, pay attention to keeping the stroke types of your hands intact no matter the rhythmic superposition you play. In other words, I try to keep the three notes of the grouping of 7 played as a Down Stroke, then a Tap, then an Up Stroke. The two notes of the grouping of 5 played as a Down Stroke followed by an Up Stroke. Very meditative, you'll see. Hope this helps! Nico.

@@nicoistaces3951Wow, I did not expect such a long response. It’s very cool. The sound is okay. I haven’t really played a polymeter rythm. I’ll try this with your instructions!
