"Get as far from the leader as possible, face the wall, and turn off animations" is the funniest part of these because it's just so petty and trivial when compared to how long the actual fight takes
The funniest part of these videos is that you’re talking about a hypothetical person suffering through this, yet you’re the only one actually going through it, and you’ve done it to yourself for the entertainment of others. A truly unique form of masochism.
@@beebfajeejy given he was messing around with different outcomes for swellows move usage, which is her first pokemon, he probably still had to do most of each attempt i think
A soft lock is a glitch or situation that allows normal play but outright stops forward progress. This differs from a hard lock, where the game crashes. OP is correct.
yeah, i thought the same, but at least you have both the gyarados disobbeying and paralisys as options to win ,i mean, lose, but losing in this case is actually winning
As soon as I saw this was on a Japanese game I knew we were in for a fun lock. I love that Pikasprey says “the elevated bridge tiles interact with Surf in a weird way” as if this is something that happens all the time.
It makes me wonder, if you were to somehow surf there in a version of the game without the acro surf glitch, if the bridge tiles would still interact the same way. Like obviously they fixed the way you could surf, but they probably didn’t do anything about the bridge tiles interacting with surf should you manage to do it another way.
@@Betsy7Cat I'm not a super expert ROM hacker, but I wouldn't say I'm a novice either. if it works the way I think it does, the bridge tiles would still interact with surfing on them in this way even in the international versions, if you found a non-bike way to surf on that bridge tile all surfable water tiles are assigned "Layer 0", but the glitch with the bike seems to shift the player's direction in a way that makes them view "Layer 1" whilst triggering the surf command, which seems to make them surf on Layer 1 instead of 0. Looking at the map of Fortree in an editor, I'm noticing the ladder up to the bridge in question has the "Layer cross" layer which allows you to go between layers without issue, with the bridge itself being on Layer 2. i'm assuming whats happening is that the player decides to stop surfing the moment you go from one layer to another, which normally should always be "from Layer 0 to a different one", but in this instance, you would be unmounting via crossing from Layer 2 to Layer 1, which leads me to believe if you did manage to surf on the bridge in the international versions, it would still unmount the surf this way
@@Betsy7CatWhen it comes to Gen 1-3, there is probably someone out there who has an answer to any question. You just have to meet someone like @PatJamma
Me: "Wow this can't get any worse" Pikasprey: "With the last Gyarados being the only one left, we can't switch, and we are forced to make an attack." This is an absolute masterpiece. I love these so much.
At first, I thought "Oh, yeah, just lock yourself in the gym, that's pretty straightforward." I thought that this was going to be a more lowkey episode. Then you showed the one way out and I remembered the lord of hell that you truly are.
I love how these have gone from trying to get out of a tough situation to actively creating the most sadistic scenarios imaginable. More like Saw-ft Lock Picking
At this point I'm convinced that Pikasprey will somehow find a glitch that stops you from leaving the back of the moving truck at the beginning of the game, or leaving your home in other gens.
In an EU version of Crystal I actually managed to do that once. I was using some item menu cheats while I was back in my room. Somehow I glitched the stairs so I could not go back down. So I was literally trapped in my room not able to go out again 😂
I mean. Gen 1 save corruption strats for item underflow could technically accomplish that? But that's basically a step removed from Arbitrary Code Execution, and outright rewriting the game's code to make it impossible to leave kinda sucks the fun out of the idea.
The only thing that would make this better would be if you beat this softlock...and then the pokemon center you're set to return to is the one in Pacifilog Town. Granted, you'd have Surf so it wouldn't screw you over, but it would still be an added layer of massive inconvenience.
@@DeisFortuna Ah yeah that too, not sure if there's a way. Plus like I realized, needing surf to set this trap up negates what makes pacifilog a threat anyway so it would be at best a final bit of amusement at a beleaguered player's expense even if it's possible to make happen.
If there were some way to bypass getting the Devon scope it could be doable to trap someone in Sootopolis. Swap the Gyrados for something that can surf but not dive (Linoone for example). Get to Sootopolis as normal, then head back to Fortree via Slateport (tossing the dive user into the daycare on the way) And Bob’s your uncle escaping into a different soft lock. I just don’t know if bypassing the Devon scope is possible
Even just locking you in the first area after Mr briney leaves, and not destroying the rock smash rock. Throw away surf and rock smash and be sent home. Pretty awful. Blood would be stuck at the start
@@irvingamer2235 The Lake of Rage Gyarados isnt accessible in Gen 3 games. Gen 2 can't connect, and gen 4 can't transfer back. So a shiny Gyarados in Gen 3 is just as good as any other.
Looking at his "ludicrously long and tedious battle" softlocks and his "absurd RNG" softlocks, Pikasprey was left to wonder what to do next. At that moment, inspiration struck.
Silver lining: Asprey didn't point it out but showed it at 11:15, but if your last Gyarados is paralyzed and the Altaria is +6 speed (which it should be since it's Struggling) then Altaria will outspeed it, meaning you don't have to rely on RNG to win--er, lose
it doesnt even need to be +6 speed the showdown damage calc says lvl 33 altaria with a neutral nature, 0 speed iv and no speed boosts is 57 speed, where a lvl100 paralyzed gyarados with perfect speed iv is 49 speed so you just gotta make sure your last gyarados is paralyzed and you "win" (not that it really matters since like you said itll be struggling at this point but still a neat thing i thought id point out)
@@Pixtrix_ not if the Gyaradoses are EV trained first and given beneficial natures. You'll notice each Gyarados has 394 HP, which will only happen if it has 252 HP EVs and why it's extra important for Endeavor to land. If you give Gyarados 52 speed EVs and a speed-boosting nature (or 138 without a speed-boosting nature) it will have 58 speed while paralyzed. But of course, Altaria has Dragon Dance and will be at +6 anyways and have 228 speed, so you can put 44 (speed-boosted)/128 (not speed-boosted) EVs for Gyarados to hit the benchmark 229 speed needed for it to outspeed if you're somehow unlucky enough for it to not get paralyzed after all 20 Dragon Breaths.
this makes me really wish he showed the stats and nature cuz i really need to know if he did go with a +speed nature and 252 speed evs or not@@ascriptmaster
It’s one thing to explain a sinister save like this, but it is another to actually prove it and go through testing and showing evidence for the sinister save yourself before telling it to the world. You’re a trooper dude lol
I always love it when he knows he can tweak a few things to make it a true softlock (i.e. beating Winona before saving), but decides to give just the smallest glimmer of hope to up the evilness of the lock
I already thought that "you have to spend two hours swapping out pokemon constantly to KO a team of lvl 100 gyrados" was sadistic enough, and then you got to the "there's a 50% chance this will fail on the last turn and theres nothing you can do about that" part. Never change Pikasprey, never change
@@handlesarestupid154 All you need to do is insert the GBA cartridge under the DS, insert the HeartGold/SoulSilver cartridge on top, go to the Pal Park IN HG/SS, and do the trade. I don't know how it works, but I believe you can do that.
Whenever I see one of these videos, I always wonder what a speedrun of this would look like. I know you give us the estimated times for the pseudo-softlocks, but I honestly think it'd be very funny if someone actually tried to do this at some point as a sort of meme speedrun.
Part of the fun of these videos for me is trying to figure out which step of the preparation phase is going to cause the most pain in trying to escape a potential softlock, but I was thrown for a loop since this uses a glitch I didn't know about. Thankfully, I've seen enough of these to know that A) having a team of level 100 Pokemon with only attacking moves means that there's a battle we probably need to lose, B) having Intimidate means switching Pokemon in and out will take even longer, and C) having shiny Pokemon will disincentivize starting a new save (it also adds an extra animation while switching). Also, with how specific of a glitch this used, I'm kinda surprised that it was caught in time to patch it out of other versions of the game.
I love to think about this from Winoana's perspective trying to figure out why they came in with 6 traded shiny level 100 gyarados only to try and intentionally lose in a battle that takes 2 hours
They will have met the final boss. The power of annoyance and dragging ass semi efficiently. Truly terrifying. On a serious note it would be pretty cool.
This series continues to get better with time. This is such a cool tidbit, the fact that you can use the acro bike to surf on land, and it's used for such a dastardly setup. It's perfect.
I think this one is my favorite. Just short enough people might actually be willing to do the hard work. Active enough that you can't mindless your way through. And puts the only real chance in the run to the very last turn.
I LOVE the commitment to "give them all Leftovers". It's the most pointless thing, "we can just remove the leftovers before we try anything", but it's the _principle_ of it! If anything, we could lean even more on the idea that most people _aren't_ going to go through all the setup and just start the battle, only realizing "oh, shit, i need to change my settings" and then "oh this is NOT doable if i have leftovers, wait, i need to take those off", which really adds that little bit extra. It's the seasoning to our absurd dish here that really does it for me. 👌
Oh, no. Think about it: Leftovers HEAL. Which means that if we don't remove them, it's possible we can't lose at all. So it's not pointless that it's leftovers.
I love that moment in all your soft lock videos of trying to figure out what the trap is this time around and having that moment of slowly dawning horror everytime realizing just how devious this trap is, only for it to then turn out even more horrific then I originally thought. Like here when I realized you'd be trapped in an un-losable battle, only for the switching and later disobedience mechanic to come in and make everything even worse. Brilliant
Indeed. Though it must have taken quite a bit of time to get not just 1, but 6 Shiny Magikarp, evolve them, get all of them to level 100, and teach them each move specifically to set this all up. It is stuff like this that makes his videos take so long. Good to see you dude.
@@enderluckjarmg985 Yeah getting the Pokemon doesn't take too long however, it still takes real time to actually get to the point he needs to while not screwing up the setup. Then there's the research and testing he has to do for consistency and estimates for how long it'd take roughly to escape or attempts to.
Gawd I love these Soft Lockpicking vids. Honestly, the insane situations people manage to find and put you in, AND the fact you actually test the soft locks out..... just, that's commitment mate. *claps* I couldn't do it, that's for sure. Either way, I look forward to whenever the next one comes out. No matter how many months it takes. They are always 100% worth it.
"Hey May, how the hell are you swimming on land?" "I have no idea, Flannery! I was doing some sick bounces on my acro bike, and I somehow glitched through the land when near the Fortree River and now I can surf on it! Call Professor Birch ASAP!"
I love this series!! I'm in college now but I remember watching it in high school and it still invokes all the same interest and memories for me. I hope you keep finding soft locks like these! Thanks, Pikasprey Yellow!
If you catch those Gyriados yourself on the same save file, then the chance of you escaping would truly be the 50% of the paralysis and you couldn't rely on disobeying anymore.
I never realized how nostalgic that opening jingle is. This was a great week for your channels, I hope this momentum carries forward deep into this year
it's always a treat to see a new soft lock video, they're as genius as they are delightfully cruel, and every time I think it can't get any better/worse, you prove me wrong again! we love to see it!
Good video, but couple things I believe you got wrong: You can absolutely guarantee that 5 Gyarados get endeavored (?), you just have to switch between two Gyarados, and the moment one of them gets hit with endeavor, you stop sending that one in against the swellow and just switch between the other and a new one, and so on until you get bit with endeavor 5 times Also, by the time your final gyarados has to attack vs altaria, you'd probably be paralyzed and it'll be at +6 speed, so it's definitely faster than you, it will just struggle and kill you, no rng involved
Yeah I was confused by the endeavor part too. I looked it up and apparently Endeavor has 100% accuracy so I'm left wondering why he's explaining it as if getting hit 3 times by it is some rare occurrence you need to pray for.
I think in the video you said "selling all your items doesn't matter", but it will matter if the user has pokeballs. They can use pokeballs to stall at the end instead of gambling if your pokemon obeys you or not. edit: as others have pointed out, he mentioned at 2:20 to throw away any items. my bad. once again pikasprey proved goofballs like me wrong who have zoomer brain attention span
Pikasprey: this diabolical trap has you with 6 shinies named AAAAAA, the player will be in a torturous situation where they can't reset if they want the shinies! Muahahaha! Me: *resets because I don't want a pokemon with the name "AAAAAA" that I can't change*
I liked your self promotion at the end! It was cozy and tasteful. I've been watching vods of your pikmin 251 and others after I watched all of your Fool's Gold series. Great content
This one is amazing, and I always enjoy how shinies serve the dual purpose of a) wasting more time with the shiny animation and b) incentive not to just reset
After about 1 or 2 years, a pikasprey video finally shows up on my recommended, reminding me how much i love these videos. Good to see youre doing well
I love not just the diabolical ability to come up with these scenarios, but I also admire the effort in pain that you put yourself through to actually record the scenarios. Well done.
*sees video* "Oh great, a new one! What chaos is in store this time?" *watches* "Huh, doesn't seem too bad so far if you're still allowed money" *glitch-surfs onto land* "...ok, I can see where this is going" *ends up south of Winona's gym* "Ohhhhh..." *battle is explained* "OHHHHHHHH.... OH NO" *says how long it can take and even the last part is no guarentee* ".........dude, this is just straight-up evil. And also the very content I subscribed for" Seriously, I friggin' love these things. Another nice video!
