In this video we go through very simple way of creating melodic percussion on a didgeridoo, with soft expression and texture.
For the exercise I used Moytze didgeridoo www.duendedidge... but it should work on any easy first toot didge.
Also, what I am curious about is how difficult you have found this exercise, so please leave your impression in the comments. You can use descriptive scale like beginner, intermediate, advanced, pro, elite, god, godmother... or you can be more exact by rating it 1-10.
This feedback will help me grade my exercise more accurately in the future.

Intermediate to advanced for me. Having / working on intermediate and beatbox courses certainly helped me as I followed through this tutorial. Love this melodic drum sound, but going to be awhile till good enough to be used by me. It is however an enjoyable exercise that I know will bear didgeridoo fruit with patience and gratitude :)

Fantastic Du! Well, I think its an advanced lession, because you have to master silent toots befor doing this.

Hey Michael! Thanks so much and thanks so much for the feedback. I don't know if you would agree, but because these toots have tongue attack, it makes them way easier than really soft toots that I would immediately classify as advanced as they can be so tricky to do properly, especially in a rhythm combo. But because these are not that soft and because you are helped by the tongue to start execution, I'd say they are way easier that what you might have had in mind. Would you agree to that?

@aeroDidge 2 года назад
@@DuendeDidgeridoo You're welcome! In terms of power and the usage of the tongue, toots are much easier to play but you have to get there. Beginners who make the toots first tend to over-do it and they will make it too loud and unbalanced in their first tries. As the person gets more expierience, they will get there as you described it, but needs practice and an awareness of the right lip tension. Your Didge can be a helper in this case, by having a shorter interval between drone and first toot! :)

to get the soft drum do I need to have my cheeks full? I'm having trouble controlling the toot when I open my cheeks.
@DuendeDidgeridoo
@DuendeDidgeridoo 2 года назад
Well, I doo it intuitively, so I had to look at the video to get the answer. Then I did a bit of thinking. Maybe the order should be reversed... anyway, I blow out cheeks slightly. I often use blown out cheeks for toot playing as it softens them. Often, but really not always. The thing is that drone is more mellow compared to toot and if one doesn't want to disrupt the overall sense of mellowness one needs to make toots on the soft side.... and one of the key elements there is to have cheeks (slightly) puffed out and the right embouchure..

Are you using a reverb?

@@DuendeDidgeridoo because it Sounds like that you are using a "Effect" in your Sound. And with that the Sound sounds not the same when i try to play your Style. Hope your understand what i mean. Greetings from Germany

@DuendeDidgeridoo Год назад
@@Dermann_ausm_Wald Got it! I would have to check the project, but I hear very mild reverb added here, the studio otherwise has a very dry sound, drier than a regular room, so this brings a bit of ambience, context, softness. That being said, I would emphasize that the sound is 98% of what you would hear if you were in the room with me. If I would have to track down the reasons for your current shortcomings with soft toot drum sound without knowing anything about your playing and situation, I would say- 1. cheeks not puffed out- and they should be 2. the tongue attack is not executed properly, 3. the didge has too low impedance on the toot and it sounds hollow, weak and dry. Hope this helps!

If you had to rate it from 1-10 where would it be?

@@DuendeDidgeridoo Well, let's first talk about the scale, or else my chosen value will make no sense. So, here's the world-proven Freddie-Veggie-Didgeridoo-Skill-Scale (tm). Whole libraries have been written about it and I still get fan-mail about it. So the scale is from 1 to 10. There's three regions on it: beginner, intermediate, mastery. The scale is not linear! Also it's not evenly divided, so let me spell it out: Beginners: Your journey from "want" to "drone" 0 - you know what a didgeridoo sounds like and would like a stab at it 1 - you can produce a drone and begin chewing overtones 2 - with a bottle of wine and an hour at the bonfire you happen to circular breath at times Intermediate: Your journey from "what?" to "that!" 3 - you begin dissecting the essence of playing and breathing. Push, pull; you stumble over toots 4 - your journey to percussive playing begins, with metronome and patterns; accidentally, you figure out triplets 5 - your desire for complexity, speed, power and glory arises and you begin figuring out what the path ahead is like 6 - you begin looking elsewhere (drums, bass, tool) for inspiration on the didge 7 - tempo, measure, dynamic and tonal changes know your middle name 8 - you've done all your exercises - for today - already. 9 - you begin to value and seek perfection in even the simplest things Mastery: Your journey .. begins. 10 - you are aware, willing and capable to invest copious amounts of time to practice to perfection. There's no impossible anymore, maybe potentially "difficult", but everything is achievable. Note, not even at 10 (and maybe especially not at 10) I'd expect anybody to encounter a new pattern and/or sound and just master it from the get-go. Anyways, on that scale, I'd give it a 4/10. The basic idea is "simple enough" ( = 3) and contains basic attack and sustain shaping with an eye/ear for detail; but without trained lips (acquired at 4 and continued to 10) and a deeper understanding for energy management (= 5) this is all still a hit-and-miss at first. Putting something like that into a pattern ( = 4) that involves breathing at specific times, different "envelopes" at different positions, AND changing the position of the alien thing is going to be overwhelming to 1-3 and requires concentration but is achievable at 4. You can do it at 3, you want to do it right at 5 (and know how to), you will revisit it at 9 & 10 to iron out the microscopic imperfections that have survived your way to 9+, but I think it's the perfect exercise for a 4. That's my take on it. For reference, I see myself progressing towards (or jumping between) 7 with a hangover from (or a plateau at) 5 and may potentially never reach 8 (life, yay!).
