Did your hen lay a soft shelled egg? I'm not a vet, but I can reassure you that this happens sometimes, like it did with our Easter Egger hen. Check out her soft shelled egg and see how it compares to a typical egg, and see how it compares to the healthy egg she laid two days after.

My order flock eats raw eggs, only because they were already doing that when I took them over. Then I got another flock, and I haven't let my younger ones eat any, cause I was told that if they start to eat raw eggs, they will start eating their own eggs. I guess it's up for debate because my older ones don't even try to eat their own eggs unless it falls out of the nesting box, or they lay soft ones. I throw the older girls eggs all the time cause I have so many. I have one hen who lays soft eggs quite often. I just thought she couldn't make a hard egg, but now I think my stupid bantam roosters are stressing her out. My little bantams try a mate with the big girls, and they sometimes have 2 or 3 on top of 1 big hen. It's funny, but not funny. Those little assholes won't leave my big girls alone. But now, I'm getting ready to move another batch out, so maybe they will be too busy with the new hens, rather then my older girls. Sorry my comment is so long, just don't have anyone to discuss chickens with.

I was laughing while imagining your three little bantam punk roosters on top of a full sized hen. I can imagine her judgy look 🐔 ! I think I'm lucky because my hens don't eat eggs in the nesting box unless, like with yours, the egg fell and broke or was accidentally stepped on and broken. I give my hens and chicks eggs all the time but I have heard of other people's hens who become egg eaters. It's so convenient to just crack an egg for a treat for the flock so I feel glad that so far this hasn't been an issue. Fingers crossed 🤞 Your flock sounds like a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing their antics. Lots of luck with the new hens!

I am afraid you are setting yourself up for a flock of egg eaters. I went away for what was expected to be two days. Ended up being three days. Four of 6 nests had yolk on the other eggs. Some of my hens are older and are laying thin shelled eggs. Once they get a taste for their eggs it's hard to stop. I know at least one was eaten today. Usually if I have a big surplus, I will hard boil a pot full and crush them. Mix in a little milk and feed and give that to them. I never give egg shells that have not been baked in the oven. I feed those back after crushing them good. Anyone who watches this video needs to be aware they are taking chances on creating egg eaters if they allow their chickens to consume raw eggs!
