SoftBank is a large investment bank based in Japan, and though most people have never heard of SoftBank, Softbank was actually the most profitable bank in the world over the past 12 months. SoftBank pulled in a whopping $56.46 billion in earnings which is the 6th highest of any company in the world. The second most profitable bank was Goldman Sachs, and they came in at just a third of SoftBank at $19.5 billion. While these profits seem impressive at first, you may not view SoftBank the same after hearing that they manipulated their way to historic profits. After the pandemic crash in 2020, SoftBank began buying billions of dollars worth of tech options which created enormous amounts of buying pressure. SoftBank was able to induce upward momentum in the market and then ride the wave up to historic figures. This video explains how SoftBank was able to use their massive cash reserves to buy themselves out of a red position by pumping the markets.

For all of you saying that SoftBank didn’t manipulate the market, according to Investopedia, the definition of market manipulation is "the act of artificially inflating or deflating the price of a security or otherwise influencing the behavior of the market for personal gain." I think making a massive purchase that literally changes the trend of the market and makes you the most profitable bank in the world definitely falls under that definition. I'm not faulting SoftBank for doing so nor am I saying that it's illegal. All big banks and hedge funds are involved in such price manipulation both to the upside and downside. And, if I was in Masayoshi's position, I would've done the same thing. But, it is still market manipulation nonetheless.

Investopedia isn't US constitution, and do you even know what market manipulation is, it's telling people to buy or short or sell some particular stocks that's manipulation and it's not illegal to invest in billions if you've a billion dollars to invest law doesn't say that you can't invest so don't ever say Masayoshi Son is market manipulator, colluding, pump and dump is market manipulation, Hedge funds colluded and shorted GameStop heavily that's illegal if proved so go and get your facts straight and for god sake read some laws not investopedia

I don't see how it's called manipulation. Softbank bought these options without hyping it with false information or anything of that sort. It's simply trading and they came out on top.
@LogicallyAnswered
@LogicallyAnswered 2 года назад
Fair enough. The reason that it could be considered manipulation is because they were single handedly able to move the markets in a big way in their favor. But as I stated in the video, if that’s all they did, it’s not illegal.

Softbank is not a bank in any way though. They're a conglomerate with a telecoms main business. Unless you want to categorise any company with a special fund investing in start-ups a bank. Then Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Samsung, Toyota, Ford, GE, Netflix, Intel, Comcast and a host of other companies can also be classified as banks. Do they invest a lot of money in start-ups? Yes. Do they qualify as being a bank? No

I almost ignored this video expecting it to be another story about Softbank managing to loose a sizeable percentage of Japan's GDP in a very bad cluster of investments. I did not realize that they had enough funds under management remaining to remain active. I definitely didn't consider it possible to recover and become this profitable. I'm glad they were able to recover both financially and in terms of brand reputation. I was actually expecting that downfall to end poorly with one person being the face of investment losses of the magnitude they were at the bottom. I'm glad those that remained loyal were rewarded so nicely, but hopefully the strategy becomes more conservative because if you keep putting Japan on Black eventually you'll land on red one too many times. I've observed them since the mid 90s. They take risk tolerance to the extremes.

I think the whole fuss about this matter is how easy they were able to come over their mistake and make easy money just by their cheer trading volume. I guess if a person invested that much in wework, it will a major blow to its own finances and will be quite hard to get over. Moreover, it reflects also the hidden power of all hedge funds and investment funds: They can earn massive amount of money by moving the markets or moving in them. I think of course they are still more discrete than Elon Musk for example who is playing a similar game but in a different manner.

well, if you become masayoshi son, and you own a big liabilities like wework and having ton of vision fund investor choking your neck , how do you recover in just 1 year in the middle of Pandemic? Most of us in his position are better off shooting ourself on the head rather than keep alive and miserable. if SEC agree that he didn't manipulate anything, then he is clean. Just because you're big enough to create an impact, doesn't mean your whole existence is a illegal or what you do is manipulation. i don't know why you irrationally want someone to be a criminal that bad it's not everyday you see a brilliant move from a master of business, he just switch his position from the worst and going to the top again. it's easy to judge someone not knowing what he going through all this time

Provocative title about market manipulation - spends 10 minutes on history of softbank and 10 seconds on describing buying options as "market manipulation". What a scam.

Japanese girl here. There seems to be a big misunderstanding about the company’s name. SoftBank started out as a software provider, they aimed to have the largest selection of software to choose from thus the name soft( short for software)+ bank. Now it’s commonly known in Japan as one of the largest telecom providers , so it’s main industry is telecommunication. Any investment Sotfbank is doing came much later on and was never part of the company’s description.
