Great presentation by James Lewis. I had seen a similar presentation in the past. I'll take this opportunity to leave a comment. My takeaways : * The most successful organizations are those capable of delivering value streams. They need to focus on the internal brakes that slow down value streams (theory of constraints). * When organizations grow, their hierarchical structure increases in depth. They get economies of scale, but also slow down and generate relatively less value (sub-linearity). There is an aging effect, which can be measured with Accelerate indicators. Comparison with living organisms, from mice to elephants ! * Organizations like AWS are able to go faster by getting bigger. Compare with cities. They generate more value while saving on infrastructure. * The key to the super linearity paradox is the network effect. The network enables optimal allocation of connections. The inversion of control between teams (product orientation) also unblocks bottlenecks. * To create this network effect, several recipes exist: forcing teams to communicate via interfaces (APIs), outsourcing interfaces (X As-A-Service), having cohesive teams ( Dunbar's number or Two-Pizza Teams). The way in which teams are divided up and how they interact is also a factor (see Team Topologies).
