Software Discrepancies Caused A Multibillion-Euro Delay To The Airbus A380 Program

After over a decade of early research and development, Airbus launched the double-decker A380 program in December 2000. The maiden flight then took place from Toulouse, France, nearly five years later, on April 27, 2005.
Things were supposed to take place sooner but difficulties plagued the program - perhaps unsurprising for its grand and ambitious nature. But for today’s video, let’s take a closer look at what caused the lengthy and expensive delays in getting the A380 into service!

In relation to different software, when I was learning 3D CAD parametric modelling with Autodesk Inventor, my instructor told us that adapting to different cad modelling software was a little bit like different car brands. The cars serve the same purpose, just the controls for things like indicators and wipers might be in different places. I didn't get enough practice on Solidworks to become competent at it but his advice did help me adapt my minset for learning to use PTC Creo a few years later. Those engineers developing parts for the A380 would have been up for the challenge of adapting to different software and processes, I'd say (if it wasn't for the national pride and complacency issues). But they got an amazing plane from it in the end.

The wiring problem (cables too short) was the result of incompatibilities between versions 4 and 5 of the CATIA CAD software from Dassault which used different rules for bend radii.

a sad fact about the delays was it resulted in the Freighter version getting postponed and ultimately cancelled, would have been interesting to see an A380F flying

Freighters aren't well suited to the 2 deck concept. A freighter A380F wasn't ever realistic.

This is likely the main reason why the program has been a financial failure. In any case, it's been an aviation success, being arguably the most comfortable commercial airliner ever built.

Today many organizations use mbse or se to overcome these problems, Boeing had a similar problem with the 787, also wiring harness length too short, they them implemented mbse for future production

Really like these videos and the narrator is very good. Sounds a bit like Hugh Dennis but I don't think it is. Just a question - why does he pronounce foreign names and places in what he thinks is the accent of the particular country? Sounds like an episode of 'Ello 'Ello!

If the A380 had entered service 6 years earlier it would have been an even larger financial failure. International travel was growing significantly during that time. The A380 couldn't stay full when it entered service. It definitely couldn't 5 years prior.

The safety standards for cars and planes are totally different. In cars, you have at most 10 lives at play, and a few hundred thousend dollars. With a plane, youre looking more at about 500, and a few hundred millions. What tesla is doing, eveb if totally fine and safe, its not safe enough for a plane
