Have been working as a Linux admin for the last 2 years. Lately not being at all excited about problems i solve day to day. And an incoming carrer jump to devops doesn't make me happier either. Wanted to switch to swe, because i already do it constantly with pleasure as a hobby, but have being scared decrease in salary after jump (because my ops experience most likely won't be counted as a legit on dev's positions). You really did hit me hard with this "cause you'll be doing devops'y kind of problems for the next 20 years"! Because 15 or 20% cut in salary at start is not even comparable with being bored 8 hours per day for the next 20 years of my life. So i am doing it! Thank You for your advice!

I personally prefer solving problems that are logical and easily traceable and more straight forward than those that require creative thinking or constantly debugging.

I just accepted an inernship that was advertised as predominantly software development, only to find out later that it's mostly devops with some software development lol. Watching the video, for scenario 1 I preferred software engineer but for scenario 2 I preferred dev ops, so I guess I'll just take it as opportunity to do both and see which I prefer.

Nowadays, with plenty of tools for a DevOps to learn, it is a bit easier to become a developer instead of a DevOps. The good or bad news is, now the companies are starting to ask you to do both jobs... If you are staring your career, be prepared for a lot of study.

I'm really enjoying this channel. I was recently promoted to Devops Engineer coming from a Sys Admin background. I have a lot of background in scripting using Python and Poweshell and while I love automating deployments and working with container technologies in general, the one thing I've noticed...at least at my company, there is still a much higher demand for automation. I spend the majority of my day writing scripts for departments that are in a bind. Is this normal?

Personally, I feel that the DevOps path may be a diversion for those who are deeply passionate about software development.

4:26, I'd use AWS cloudwatch for this, autoscaling. i'm not a devops yet but i'm familiar with AWS services.

Speaking as an Enterprise Architect for a Large Data Company (Insights) as a developer, you would not be asked to create a new algorithm. Algorithms have to be accepted, so they are dictated to the development staff. You may try and find a way to make it faster or any of the application characteristics improved. New algorithms are rarely discovered by development, they may be dictated from measurement science departments.

Hi Will, I have worked as a developer for around 8 years but my jobs were mostly for legacy applications so my work spanned over technologies like C++, C and MySQL. Tired of the limited job growth I was seeing, I took a career break and took a bunch of Cloud courses and certifications. Now, 7 months later, I have landed a job as an SRE for a startup-like company. With a good hike from my previous salary too. I was happy for like two days but now I am starting to get cold feet. I love data structures and algorithms and I also want exposure to the latest technology. Is DevOps/SRE role a downgrade for people who love to deal with algorithms and coding ? Would it be hard for me to switch back to a developer role down the line if i don't like being an SRE/DevOps engineer ? Would love to know your opinion!

Be frontend dev about 5 years, starting to feel bored fixing old UI bugs or adding new simple features. I am in pharse of moving to be Devops. But I am afraid that I will regret not choosing to be fullstack dev instead.

I interned as a DevOps engineer for 6 months then joined my current company as a Software Dev not really enjoying the work maybe because of old tech stack. I liked automating using Python and playing though CI/CD yamls. Now I am finding difficult to take decision whether to continue Dev or choose DevOps, DevOps might include more Ops taks which I was not exposed as an intern. I just want a good balance and also enjoy writing code along with good architecture knowledge of how actually things working. Would be really helpful to hear from you Thanks 🙏

I spent weeks thinking about this for the first case scenario full stack was the better for me but for the second case scenario i don't like UI designing that much so can i learn full stack development but focus more on the backend ? cuz i like coding and working with the database more than frontend and that would be also for freelancing Also can we consider full stack development to be future proof like DevOPS ? i just graduated with Cs degree but i am starting from ground zero after being sick for a long time due to Covid and thinking of freelancing

I enjoy the simple act of coding, but there is something about the "developer job" that makes me wanna stay away from it. Idk, maybe I just find boring all the CRUD stuff and having to go through dozens of libs and frameworks docs, instead of actually write cool and efficient algorithms. Also I hate doing front end job, I wish everything was accessed from command line lol (just kidding). Maybe some day I try system programming instead of working on commercial applications. But recently I got a DevOps internship and I'm really enjoying it, I feel like I'm "actually using a computer" to make something valuable, maybe because this role expects you to have a more technical knowledge of operating systems and networks and I enjoy a lot leaning these subjects. Also, I find more joy in viewing the big picture of problems (software lifecycle, infrastructure etc) than having a "tunnel vision" like in the developer role. DevOps is for me.

I clicked on your video because most videos or materials online give a poor description that DevOps Developer are just automating things. Ok, but what exactly is automation and what does automating things look like? So far, your examples of what each profession does has been the best articulate description in helping someone understand what a DevOps developer does. Finally, my question for you is, what are the pre-requisites and requirements for becoming an AWS DevOps Developer? So far to my understanding I think you need these things. Mastery of Python. Learn Dockers. What would be your personal thoughts on which one requires you to learn more? Meaning requirements. Have been a devops intern for 6 months, but my soul still clings on to the software development field as i love data structures and algorithms, logic building and thought process that i have learnt and practiced during my college time(I am currently in my final semester). Currently i am thinking of working as a devops engineer as FTE for another 6 months(concentrating more on cloud tech which may also be a valuable skill in swe) and then shift my role as a swe... Is this a right strategy for my career or am i just wasting 6 months of experience as a swe??
