Fantastic! I used to work on the Soho Road as shown at 2:37 near the junction of Grove Lane/Nineveh Road between 1983 to 1987. While watching the film, I could literally smell the aroma, hear the noises and feel the warmth and friendliness of the people of the Soho Road. Happy, happy days.
@@MK-mh6lh If you stop the video at 2:37 you will see the West Bromwich Building Society branch office of which I was the manager. Its now a Cash 4 Gadgets shop. In 1990 I was working in Head Office and I was asked to cover at Harborne Branch. I refused. So they sent the assistant manager to Harborne and I got my wish to cover at Soho Road. It was wonderful! It was like coming home. Many of my previous customers remembered me and were disappointed I was not going to return to the Soho Road. Happy days.
@@johnr7769 amazing!! My grandfather had a fabrics business on soho rd ‘Fashion Fabrics’ so grew up visiting the road daily, I also would attend nursery on louise rd so as a 3 year older in 1990 I’m sure my mother and I walked past the building society several times! How strange, it brings back so many memories and sadness that those days will never com back being a 33 year old man with several grey hairs 😄
I was hoping you would drive towards Holyhead Road or Rookery Road as a bonus. Anyway, It does bring back a lot of memories of Soho Road. Great upload.
Born in Brum ,1941, lived in many areas , including Handsworth , 1948 to 1950. Knew Rookery road well, and Soho road. Family left Brum 1955. I last drove down Soho Road . 1998, the changes were astonishing, 90% shop's were Asian owned and peopled. It looked like a city street in Karachi or Bombay.
Loving this video!! ... I attended 'Handsworth Grammar School' ... 1980 to 1987 .. and lived in 'Handsworth Wood' ... 1971 to 1997!!! .... So many memories Here! ... just love how you have captured 'Real life' in Soho Road at the time!!! ... :-)
I was 15,lived in Castle Vale but my mom used to come up here for a bus trip, god I can see that KFC in my minds eye,Good times in Birmingham. Desperate times now
Ahhhhh! Remember buying toys from that shop at 2:14 minutes. Soho road had Woolworths up the road on right side. Wow memories of love amongst the locals. Now...it's looking like Mad max film!
Wow.....brings so much memories back....I was 5 when this was filmed and remember everything, such a shame it's not like this anymore...I'm watching in 2021
The most famous road in all the Midlands I'd have thought. I remember having to tuck my money away when going through on the bus. Still has significant issues but Handsworth is a vibrant melting pot that eptimoses Brum and I love it.
So happy to have found this video, which was shot less than two weeks before I was born... I lived on George Street (off Clarence Road) from then until November 8th 2001 so this has brought back some amazing memories.
KIDHAAA SARDAAR JI TUSI TEEKAYA, lol i see many sardaar ji's on soho road :D soho road looks exactly the same, brings back memories, i went to holyhead school back then, so know soho road very well
Only thing changed is the Romanians walking around with pushchairs begging that's what changed is that the best the eu can do for England pick a pocket or two
Disgusting comment. I'm a half Polish, a tiny minority of EU citizens in this country are Roma. You wouldn't be here without migration either. Utter moron.
I grew up in Handsworth now living in London good times remember going up to the shops with my mum to buy various items which now you can buy online funny how things change
Another fun fact: Quite a lot of famous people passed by the Monty including afew wrestlers, British Bulldog was one of them and they’d apparently ask where they could get some gear from. Lennox Lewis was turned away because there was a ‘no dreds’ policy because they associated them with trouble and they didn’t know who Lennox was at the time lol. Crazy!
I used to go to the monty back in the 80s with my big sisters. I was 16 years old and It was clear I wasn't old enough to be there but while I was with my older sisters I got in every Saturday. I remember we use to get given a raffle ticket for the rice and peas and chicken/ mutton 😂😂😂
Wow, brought back memories. When I lived in Nineveh Road, in the 40's - 60's, the Soho Road was 'our' hang out. There never was garbage around though and of course not as much traffic. It still amazes me how the bus drivers can manoeuvre those double deckers around, amazing. Still some of the old buildings there and even some of the same stores. Thanks for this, almost made me cry! Didn't see any fish and chip shops?
Hi, I am creating a documentary about the history of handsworth, is there any way I am able to get in contact with the people that took this video, so I can use it in my documentary.
Sue Brown is a poetess and may have a website. The original tape has gone to MACE (Media Archive of Central England) in Lincoln and they let you access it and also all the old Central Television tapes
Handsworth was and is the ghetto of Birmingham, a place that time had forgot, most places have refurbed and changed, but Handsworth is in a different time span, hardly any improvement , its in a freeze mode, lol
The racist locals in Birmingham always slag off this area handsworth never to return they hate the place with passion hence why no whites live in handsworth.
so weird how some things are still there like KFC and kg miles, ambala sweet centre only closed last year cause they moved and how it's basically the same
It looks so peaceful, now everyone judges and hates each other because 70% of the country is living on the bread line and 30% are rich and over paid and England is supposed to be yet a wealthy country 🤷♂️
When I passed my bus license at Perry Barr I used to to hate going through Soho rd on number 11 bus it was nasty 🤮 rasta telling me his not paying cannabis and crack being smoking on bus
Lock all your car doors and shut your windows when you drive down that road these day oh and don’t bother about car insurance most of them on that road don’t know what it is lol joking aside walked that road many times in the 80s
@@akumar7366 One of the least safe. Handsworth is quite literally near the bottom, look at the stats for that area and compare it to other areas in Brum.
